Yeah, basically Pakistani's don't like to pay tax. The country is living beyond it's means, regularly borrowing to spend on cost of running the country. They also borrow to build infrastructure and never borrow to build anything that might return some money.

So spending is going to go down, taxes are doing to go up. When I say spending, what I really mean is state subsidies. Everyone gets a subsidy for everything, energy and fuel especially but also public transport, fertiliser etc. A lot of non profit making state enterprises are being sold off too.

In a country of 220 million, 1 million pay taxes. The rest don't. Those days are on the way out.
Just did a very quick and direct comparison of income tax rates and seems it's lower in Pakistan, especially for high income groups. Of course there's multiple other factors to consider, but think higher income groups could be taxed higher.

Please don't.

My father told me he once ended up paying 97% tax, that's how high it got in India in the 70's. And he paid it, but most didn't and that's how black money went mainstream.

I think 10% for everyone across the board is better. For higher income people it shouldn't be more than 30%. Plus you should also take into account that income tax payers are getting taxed double. Income tax payers are paying direct tax on there income and then getting taxed again whenever they purchase anything through indirect taxes. So you end up getting taxed on your income and then again on your expenditure.

What is this Azadi March?
It's the right wing islamist Maulana FazlUr Rehman trying to create a position in government for himself by trying to cause political disruption. He wants the government to resign and wants fresh elections. During his march he's condemned the government for releasing Asia Bibi (the Christian lady cleared of blasphemy by the supreme Court). He's also accused the PM of selling out Kashmir to the Jews, where Zac Goldsmith (the PMs former brother in law) was the broker of the deal. He's accused the PM of planning to normalise relations with Israel.

He's been joined on the march by Pakistans far left including figures who built a career hating this man. They stand side by side with him as he plays the religious card, blasphemy card and spouts anti semitism.

Also the centre right PMLN have sent some supporters and leaders too, although the Sharif family has been absent. They did however hold thier own small rally where Shabaz Sharif claimed the government is being run by black magic done by the PMs current wife.

Last thing the region needs is another demented right wing cnut. Hope he fails in his designs.

That Maulana is the equivalent of Tommy Robinson or any right wing KKK Church nut. The only saving grace in that group is that at least Tommy Robinson is the least hypocritical as he believes in his own hatred of others.

The fact that Sharif and Bhutto families will go to bed with him shows the level of governments we've had for the last 25-30 years, barring Musharraf who was the only relief we had in between before the West and Pakistanis themselves chucked him out.

Pakistan to restore, hand over 400 Hindu temples

Pakistan's federal government has decided to reopen Hindu temples across the country in phases, fulfilling the longstanding demand of the minority Hindus that their places of worship be restored to them.

When most Hindus left Pakistan during Partition, many temples were lost to encroachment; even in places where some Hindu families stayed back, local strongmen muscled in and occupied temple land.

Many temple complexes ended up being used as a common facility and some even became madrassas.

Now the Pakistan government wants to reclaim temples and hand them over to the Hindu community. The government has decided to reclaim and restore 400 temples to the Hindu citizens of Pakistan.

The process will begin with two historic shrines in Sialkot and Peshawar. Sialkot has a functioning Jagannath Temple and now the 1,000-year-old Shivalaya Teja Singh is set to be restored.

Hindus had stopped visiting the shivalaya (shawala) after a mob attack during Babri mosque demolition protests in 1992.

In Peshawar, the Pakistani courts had ordered reopening of the Gorakhnath Temple and it's been declared a heritage site.

Pakistan: Sikh community flocks to Kartarpur Corridor

Islamabad: The religious celebration, the arrival of thousands of Sikh devotees and opening of Kartarpur Corridor marks is a rare moment of peace between Pakistan and India amid tense relations.

Hundreds of Sikh devotees, donning colourful turbans and headscarves, on Tuesday celebrated the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikh religion, Guru Nanak, in Pakistan. The opening of the Kartarpur Corridor on November 9 brings double delight to the Sikh community. It took Pakistan and India nearly 72 years to cover the distance of four kilometres to build the visa-free corridor but the day has finally arrived.

“We are not only opening [the] border but also our hearts for the Sikh community,” Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan announced earlier on the inauguration day as the country welcomed visitors from all over the world to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib — the holiest Sikh shrine in the world.

“This unprecedented gesture of goodwill from Pakistan is a reflection of our deep respect for Baba Guru Nanak Dev Ji and religious sentiments of Sikh community” Imran stated, adding that the road to prosperity of region lies in peace.

“I pray for PM Imran Khan’s long life and health for what he has done for the Sikh community,” said Gurdeep Kaur, a Sikh devotee from New Delhi.

Among the Sikh pilgrims is 90-year-old Harbans Singh, 90, who is visiting Pakistan after around 70 years. After paying his respects at the shrine, he visited his home village in Pakistan’s Jaranwala city in Faisalabad, looking for his childhood home and friend. The friend, he learned later, had passed away.

“Coming to Pakistan is like coming back to home,” Singh said in a video shared online, adding that he was touched by the respect and love shown by the local people.

Another heartening video widely shared on social media was a conversation between a Pakistani bus driver and Indian journalist Ravinder Singh Robin. “I don’t think you are as happy as I am. Tears of joy fill my eyes to see Sikh people coming to the home of their Guru,” Sadam Hassan said, adding that Indian Sikhs visiting Pakistan on a pilgrimage was like Muslims visiting Makkah for Hajj.

As millions of Sikhs are marking the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak around the world, the biggest ceremony is being held in Pakistan at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib where thousands of Sikh pilgrims have arrived from India, Canada, UK, UAE and Europe. The opening of the visa-free Kartarpur peace corridor has made the annual event more special.

To facilitate visa-free travel of 5,000 pilgrims arriving through the Kartarpur Corridor from India on a daily basis, Pakistan has set up around 76 immigration counters. The white-domed shrine and complex features a tent village to accommodate up to 10,000 guests, medical centre, IT centre, museum, currency exchange booth, shopping kiosk and a free food hall for 2,000 people.

I'm really glad this government is taking steps towards protecting the rights of religious minorities. Hopefully he can win a second term and then take on the anti Ahmadi lobby.

Sri Lanka have arrived in Pakistan for the hosts' first Test in their own country since a 2009 gun attack.

Eight people were killed and several players were wounded when the Sri Lanka team bus was ambushed in Lahore in March 2009.

The majority of Pakistan's home Test matches have since taken place in the United Arab Emirates.

Pakistan Cricket Board chief executive Wasim Khan said Sri Lanka's arrival marked an "historic occasion".

So this all went tits up pretty quick.

Loads of dodgy politicians have finally been jailed for corruption charges, only for them all to slowly be released on bail by the courts on grounds of ill health. The Zardari and the Sharif clan are both now free, the Sharifs are roaming around London and no doubt the Zardari clan will soon plot to go to Dubai. Nawaz Sharif has become so ill he's been seen shopping in Harrods.

Meanwhile the former dictator Pervez Musharraf has been sentenced to death without actually being able to have his day in court, because he's also ill in a hospital bed in Dubai.

On top of that the Saudi's have a leash on PM Imran Khan and forbidden him from going to a summit organised by the Malaysians on Islamaphobia and poverty in the Muslim world as the Gulf Arabs reckon it's an attempt by Malaysia, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia and Qatar to create an organisation as a rival to the impotent "Organisation of Islamic Countries".

Oh on the bright side, a lady who's a senior exec at Google has joined the PM's Digital Pakistan innitiative. It's an attempt to roll out e-governance to help reduce corruption.

Islamabad: After two decades learning at the world’s best schools and working for leading technology companies, Tania Aidrus is back in Pakistan to lead the country’s transformation into a digital society.

On Thursday, when Prime Minister Imran Khan formally launched the ‘Digital Pakistan’ initiative, the hall was filled with awe and inspiration as all eyes were on Aidrus, who had just quit her job at Google to serve her homeland.

The tech consultant, who has been living abroad for over 20 years, said when she was contacted by the Pakistan government to lead the project, she promptly agreed.

“I came back to contribute to country’s development because I want to see Pakistan prosper,” she said.

“This is the first step towards [our] digital journey,” she announced identifying five key pillars of the programme: access and connectivity, digital infrastructure, digital skills and literacy, e-government, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The programme aims to ensure access to the internet for every Pakistani as a fundamental right, and to create a digital infrastructure to make everyday tasks easier, faster and secure.

Other objectives include to digitise government processes, invest in digital education and create an enabling environment for start-ups and investors.

Pakistan’s prime minister says his government will now shift focus to e-governance after having stabilized national economy

Digitizing the government’s core functions will help prevent corruption by bringing in transparency, and accelerating ease-of-access and facilitation of the public, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Thursday.

Addressing the launch of his government’s Digital Pakistan Initiative, Khan said it had always been an aim of his to introduce e-governance to the country. “However, our primary focus in our first year was on stabilizing the national economy,” he said, adding that now that the economy was on strong footing, e-governance would take priority.

Under the Digital Pakistan Initiative, the government has outlined the country’s digital ambitions, with a desire to establish a digitally progressive and inclusive Pakistan that eases cooperation between the state and the private sector. The program also envisages providing basic services through mobile handsets, thereby saving people from having to queue up at banks or government offices to get simple tasks accomplished. It is divided into five core pillars: access and connectivity; digital infrastructure; e-government; digital skilling and literacy; innovation and entrepreneurship.

Under the head of ‘Access and Connectivity,’ every Pakistani would have access to the internet as a fundamental right. The second pillar of ‘Digital Infrastructure’ aims at allowing daily tasks to be completed via smartphones quickly and securely. The third goal is E-Government, aiming at digitizing intra-government operations and processes to move toward paperless operations, ensuring better delivery for citizens. The fourth pillar ‘Digital Skills and Literacy’ will help tech graduates secure relevant jobs. The final pillar, ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship,’ will provide an enabling environment for start-ups.

The prime minister said digitization would prove particularly beneficial for the youth of Pakistan, as it would create new jobs and make it easier for entrepreneurs to set up businesses with minimal difficulties. “The youth of Pakistan can become the country’s greatest strength if given the opportunity,” he said, adding that this would also open up greater employment opportunities for women.

'We are owning you': PM Imran launches health card scheme for transgender community

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday launched the Sehat Insaf Card for members of the country's transgender community.

Addressing a ceremony held in connection with the launch in Islamabad, the premier lauded the government team for coming up with the idea to provide health insurance to transgenders.

"Sadly, there is not a realisation in our country what kind of hardships transgenders face," he said, adding that the government had decided to take responsibility of the community by providing health cards.

Prime Minister Imran regretted that the previous governments did not play the role that they should have for the creation of an excellent humanitarian and justice system in the country. On the other hand, he said, the PTI government despite inheriting "the most difficult economic conditions in Pakistan's history" had decided to lift the weaker segments of society through the health insurance scheme.

He assured the transgender community that the government will ensure their "complete protection" and work to eliminate the negative attitudes prevalent against them.

Pakistan nowadays is depressing though. Two step forwards always followed by one step back. Still better than the previous government.

Could we please have a seperate Pakistan bashing thread rather than ruining my one? I stated quite clearly when I opened it that I wanted to highlight the positive this this government was doing (as there was a renewed sense of optimism in Pakistan at the time).

WRT the Gudwara...

1. The Building was not attacked, nobody entered the grounds.
2. The protest was organised by the brother of a man who was currently under arrest for coercing someone to convert.
3. The brother who organised a mob to try and create communal tension has been charged under the anti terrorism act.

A man has to distract from his political malaise somehow. Besides he gets all these likes on twitter when he does.

Also there is a big difference between being a country which is formed around religion, to being one where the government is working to cull all members of a certain religion. The last time that happened was in Germany in the 40's.

The appointment of the lady from Google will help with the implementation of projects like this one;

PM inaugurates model police station in Mianwali

By RECORDER REPORT on January 5, 2020

With a view to providing prompt relief to the people and build up trust between public and the force, Prime Minister Imran Khan Saturday inaugurated a model police station equipped with modern infrastructure and facilities at Mianwali.
The opening of this model police station was also a symbolic inauguration of total such 29 stations established across the province. On his arrival at Mianwali Police Lines, a contingent of Punjab Police presented guard of honor to PM Imran Khan.
Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar, Punjab Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Punjab Police were also present on the occasion. The IG Police briefed the PM about the model police station and other measures taken by the Punjab police to provide relief to the people.
Besides other facilities, the model police stations have been equipped with token calling system and CCTV cameras to keep vigil on all the activities there, ensuring quick and hassle-free disposal of public complaints through establishment of front desks.

--------------

They want to digitise the police process as much as possible and build in procedures to help cut corruption. The police are the worst people you can come across in Pakistan.... well on par with politicians, lawyers, dodgy doctors, mullahs and fake spiritual guides.

Is drug addiction a big issue in Pakistan too?
Yeah, the scale of it is largely undocumented. It used to be focused on Opium and Heroin, but now Crystal meth is more vogue and it's present in schools and the middle classes. Cannabis has always had a big presence in Pakistan too, but it's not a problem on the same scale as the hard drugs are.

Yup it is, I once volunteered with a homeless child shelter teaching them football. There was one kid who was really good but he vanished after two weeks, they found him high on drugs in the street a few weeks later. He never came back as well.
