There's an old proverb in American Football by the philosopher John Madden, That if you have two starting quarterbacks (quarterback controversy), then you have no quarterbacks (starter quality) on your team.
We dont have two. Henderson is the undisputed no 1 for weeks now. De Gea played the cup games. There's an old proverb in American Football by the philosopher John Madden, That if you have two starting quarterbacks (quarterback controversy), then you have no quarterbacks (starter quality) on your team.
This. Hendo allows us to push up further. His vocal nature is also welcome in what I still see as quite a meek team at times. Is he technically a better keeper? No, probably not but DDG has peaked and is on the way down.Hendo is the more modern GK. He'll sweep up through balls and move off his line.
Dave is the better shot stopper but that's about it. I was always a fan of his but keeping has changed and we need to change with the times.
Hendo deserves a full season and Davies wages are too high for him to be a bit part player.
It's difficult to find a club for him so I imagine they'll both still be here when the window closes and we'll lose Dave on a free eventually.
This misses the point, it isn't so much a case of "which goalkeeper is better?" More a point of "which goalkeeper are we a better team with?"I'm yet to be convinced by Henderson, I don't see how he's better than De Gea, if at all
But we did offload Sanchez, just like we did Rooney. So we've signed Heaton and the word is that he is going be our #2.
If that's true, it surely means one of DDG or Henderson is leaving.
It would be difficult to offload De Gea for two reasons. One is that he and his wife have long wanted to return to Spain and all of the big Spanish clubs have well established goalkeepers who are better than he is. Atlético might be an option as part of a part exchange deal with Oblak coming to United, but they'd be crazy to accept such a trade because DDG is, at present, a downgrade. He was world class for a few seasons, and there was talk that he was our best ever, but he's not been the same since about 2018 - some say he never quite recovered from the World Cup.
He could quite possibly go to Italy, but I'm not convinced any of the big teams there could satisfy his wage demands, which brings us on to our second problem:
Nobody is going to pay ~£350k per week for a goalkeeper who is no longer in the conversation for being the world's best. For comparison, Oblak and Neuer make about that same amount, Donnarumma is said to be on around £200k and Ter Stegen around £150k.
If De Gea still played with the same form he did in 2015, circa the time that Real Madrid's fax machine decided to block the transfer, £350k would be a reasonable weekly investment, but he's currently struggling to prove that he's better than Henderson.
Henderson would be much easier to offload, but that could be a terrible folly on our part, especially if De Gea regresses further. It's an impossible situation for Ole. Neither De Gea nor Henderson want to be backups, but it'll be difficult to move DDG on. I hate to make this comparison, because I love big Dave and I want him to be world class again, but it reminds me in many ways of Alexis Sánchez in 2019, we were paying him a fortune in return for very little and struggling to find a way to offload him. I never thought that DDG would ever be the kind of player we'd talk about 'offloading' - but he really isn't anything like the player he was 5-6 seasons ago, and at present, he's not worth the crazy wages he commands.
And if we keep DDG we'll be having the same conversation too. Whats your point? We all know we are not getting a GK this summer.I'm more and more convinced that if we sell De Gea, we'll back in this thread next year saying we need a new number 1. Henderson has fundamental technical issues that IMO means he will never reach De Gea's best level. Which is the calibre of player that should be United number 1.
I'm not convinced. He's got world class talent, for sure, but I'm not convinced he's got the mindset to go along with it.I'm backing David to turn his form around this season. He's hit rock bottom but he's got the tools required to be what he knows he can be.
Hendo to be our cup goalie.
I'd put my house on this prediction!
I am divided. He doesn't touch an in form DDG but i did want him between the sticks when DDG’s form dipped. Theres always a hype about a mildly talented english player when they appear in the premier league. The kind of hype that causes Arsenal to bid £43m for Ben White.I'm yet to see anything from Henderson in a United shirt to suggest he's anything more than a capable number 2.
