It was smart business. They got him cheap, got a lot of goals out of him and made good transfer profit. The alternative to that clause would have been not signing him at all.
No one else is going to win the league until he fancies Madrid or Barca.
They put it in so they could get him. If they didn't, he would have went elsewhere. They still made a profit.
