We played a 4-2-3-1 at times last season where Pogba dropped deeper and we still had no control in the games. We're placing a lot of faith in Mctominay and Pogba carrying us this season and it just seems incredibly risky.
The combinations we can have for those two central midfield spots look pretty unbalanced whichever way you spin it.
We set up very differently in preseason versus what we did last year.
Pogba was positioned at LAM last season. Shaw and Martial both played close-by, and together they formed a triangle which we used to build up slowly up the left side. On the right side, by contrast, the whole flank was covered by the RB (Young/Dalot/Valencia), with Lingard drifting central to help out the aforementioned triangle.
Effectively, we were a possession based side up the left, and a direct counterattacking side on the right. It was a deliberately lopsided formation, intended to force the opposition to adapt to our strengths or else risk getting dominated on one flank.
What's different in preseason is that Pogba is the RCM. Martial is a lot more central and Shaw higher up; AWB and Lingard are mirroring those two on the right, so it looks as though Ole no longer wants a lopsided formation. For the first time since the Nani/Valencia days, we'll be balanced on both flanks. Another very drastic new tactic appears to be our high pressing. As a result, the midfield's job is going to be a total departure from what's come before.
The upshot of all this is that we're massively different from back-to-front and also from left-to-right. McTomminay and Pogba in a midfield 2 will have a different support structure around them this coming season. I see us being a significantly better team.
