There is apparently a Age of Empires II HD Edition out Tuesday. Doesn't look that different to me.

I think it was you who said they'd bought the Witcher recently - focus on that first, its a brilliant game. Then when you're done play the sequel.

Decent fairly modern games off the top of my head:

Purely Multiplayer:
Defiance
The Showdown Effect
DOTA 2
Natural Selection 2
Battlefield 3
Planetside 2

Single Player + Multiplayer:

Borderlands 2
Far Cry 3
Dragon Age 1 (if you missed it the first time)
XCOM
Civ 5
Starcraft 2
Mass Effect (any of them just ignore the ending of 3)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Ignoring the boss fights)
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Fallout 3

StarCraft is a very good game made by Blizzard, the makers of Diablo/Warcraft...

YOu usually find you prefer either StarCraft/Warcraft or Diablo, that being said many Blizzard fans play all but meh, I have played all games and would personally rank Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion to be far superior to them all. A game that is 15 years old and has one of the biggest online platforms STILL, it is free to play with more custom ability than any other game IMO because of the fact you can MAKE custom games such as Tower Mazes, Football, Paintball, Racing, DOTA etc etc

Loved the first Witcher. I played one of the first releases that was bugged like hell, but it was still an incredible game. Get the latest version of the game (where pretty much everything should be fixed) and you're in for a treat. The second disappointed me a bit (and never got around to completing it because my desktop got fecked), but was still a very good game.

What is Starcraft actually like? Is it all about online?

I got amnesia last night and promptly shit myself and turned it off.
There's a single player campaign too, but you won't get full value from the game without playing online.

What genre do you mainly like? I assume you've played Dragon Age on a console as well - if not; get the first one!

Baldurs Gate 2 with the Throne of Bhaal expansion is incredible. 200+ hours of gameplay if you do it properly.

I love Civ 5. I know many aren't that fussed, but I think it's great.

Neverwinter Nights (1&2) is also good but a bit of a life-sucker.

In fact I'll go alone with Drainy's suggestion. By that pack, take a month off work and emerge never needing to play another computer game as you'll have played the best.

Decided to hijack this thread instead of creating one, sue me :p (Couldn't find PC thread)

What would people say would be the minimum price you'd be looking at for a gaming PC that can play the majority of games? It doesn't have to be sensational or the greatest, simply the cheapest PC that can play most games that are out there. Any recommendations in particular?

Cheers guys.

What genre you are more interesting? Do the games have to be new games?

Well so far I have Civ 5, Doom 3 (updated one), Rage, Kingdoms of Amular, old Fallouts, Amnesia and Age of Empires 2 so tbh I play almost any type of game, just has to be a good one. I'm not interested in games with massive learning curves though, haven't got time for that stuff, and I really don't like JRPGs.

Isn't FF9 your all time favorite game?

Played Deus Ex? Definitely the best ever PC exclusive game.

Get the Conquerors mod for Age of Empires II. It is an absolutely brilliant game, though you need to have some friend who play it. A little difficult in the beginning but a really brilliant on. From strategic games single player, I can recommend Rome Total War in case you haven't played it. Europa Universalis 2 is brilliant too.

Haven't played much of the new stuff, but people love The Witcher. And Dragon Age: Origin (in case you haven't played it yet) is a must play.

Think the sequel was on consoles so you might have played it but if not - Portal and Portal 2. They are perfection.

Yep, it's the exception to the rule though. Something different about that game compared to most. I need to get with Deus Ex actually and Planescape Torment.
Do it. I feel like shouting from the rooftops about this at the moment; it is the most ridiculous gaming experience. Really don't think I've ever come across a game in which graphics are as utterly irrelevant as they are in this one.

I remember thinking when playing the Witcher that it was cool how the little side missions were meaningful and contributed towards the progression of the plot, but in this the side-missions strengthen the plot massively and make the story much more compelling. You can talk to almost anyone and have a chance of gaining more of an idea as to what is going on with the protagonist and his backstory.

That for me is one of the main differences between this and the other Western RPGs I've played - it felt with those more like there was a lot of content there simply to give depth to the world instead of contributing directly to the storyline. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, The Elder Scrolls, etc...they all have fascinating and immersive worlds but Planescape: Torment goes many steps further. The lore and history of the game is pretty much all relevant, and there is very little in the game that has been placed there without it being cleverly thought out or significant in some way. I've genuinely just stopped at times and grinned at how clever some of it actually is in a 'how the feck did they think of that?' sort of way. The differences in cultural and philosophical beliefs between the factions for example...the factions themselves are mostly a mish-mash of various Eastern and Western philosophies but all have their own essentially distinct stance on life in view of the game setting. For example, there are a group called 'The Sensates' who look down on the 'Godsmen' for their belief that the objective of existence is to ascend through different reincarnations of the 'Prime Material' plane towards divinity. The Sensates take issue with this due to their belief that knowledge, meaning and truth in life are derived only from the sensations of the mind resultant from human experience, and this is essentially representative of a real life argument between, say, a Hindu person and a subjective idealist. There is so, so much stuff going on like this in the game and not all of it is so direct in terms of how analogous it is to real life. Some of it is extremely inventive.

...I need to stop going on about it now, anyways. To people who have played it, is Deus Ex really that good? Must get on that at some point - I'm liking the sound of what I'm reading about it on here.

Now I've got my MacBook setup I'm looking to stick a couple of games on it. I have Starcraft 2 up & running already. However, I have a real desire to go back and play FF7 :) Has anyone downloaded & run it on Win7 via bootcamp? I've got 8gb ram and the i7 processor so performance shouldn't be an issue.

 I love Koei games! Both the Chinese and Japanese hack'n'slash games are equally fantastic!

Try these out:

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Max Payne
Deus Ex
Left4Dead 2
Warlords Battlecry
Diablo 1 & 2
MoH: Airborne
Tried them all,

RA2, and Diablo 2 takes most of my youths away :D

Never tried deus ex though, can't bear the talking and stuff...but I heard its quite good.

Agree with the bit about deus ex. Forget PC exclusive, for me it's the best game of all time.

I'm afraid there is a truly horrifying website called 'The Iso Zone' that will almost certainly have it. It specialises in old/reasonably old PC games, so anyone hoping to get Deus Ex would be in luck there I imagine.

BTW...Has anyone here played the original GTA2? The 2D version with overhead camera, having Loonies, Yakusa and other gangs? It was abswolutely my favourite game at that time and still is incredibly fun

Kill Frenzies were so much fun esp with a flame thrower!
