Indeed, absolutely fantastic keeper back in his day. It's always easy to forget how good a player was before their decline. Wonder what he'll do post-playing career.

Great goalie in his prime and will be remembered for being part of Chelsea's legendary back 5 (or 6 if makelele is included).

I have a feeling history won't remember him as well as he'd hope due to how average he was for the second half of his career. I suppose Stephen Hunt should shoulder the blame for some of that.

Was sensational in that Chelsea team. Shame that he has been totally out of his depth for the last 4-5 years.

The last few years he's been a pale imitation of his very best self but as he says he's won the lot and will rightly go down as one of the great keepers.

In his prime, was unbeatable. Along with the defensive line in front of him, you always felt mentally that when you were playing Chelsea it was very difficult to score. I still think De Gea is better than him. Agree with the opinion that he is one of the top 4 keepers the Premier League has ever seen, the other being Schmeichel, De Gea, VDS. I wouldn't include Seaman in that list as I don't think he was that great.

Legendary keeper, won all major trophies in England and Europe with Chelsea. He could have been even better though, he wasn't quite the same after his awful injury from Hunt in the reading game.

Fantastic goalkeeper, massive figure in the history of Premier League. Always perceived him as a solid guy, too. TOP 5 (Premier League) easily for me.

In his prime (i.e. pre-injury) he was as good as they got. Really should have been out longer than he was. The injury was horrendous.

Continued the long Chelsea tradition of having absolute helmets in their team

Makes me feel old when players who I remember as 'young' players are now retiring

I remember how immense he was before the head injury in that first Mourinho Chelsea season. Never really felt he got back to that form

Excellent keeper back in the day, remember being very envious of Chelsea when he was single handedly winning them points at the tender age of 21 or whatever it was. Never really recovered the same form after his head injury though, shame really because he would have been talked about in the same breath as the likes of Toldo and Buffon if he'd maintained it.

Still would do a job for most premier league teams outside the top six. So surprised he’s retired.

I don’t think he really was the same, but honestly you can’t blame the guy, an injury like that will take something away from you, mentally at the very least.

He was an absolute monster prior to that though, and I don’t think he’ll have any regrets about his career. He won all there was to win.

Great player and a great man, Chelsea legend. Won everything at the club and conducted himself with dignity on and off the pitch.

Was a fantastic keeper... Seems like a nice guy too..

I remember him being dodgy in Euro 2012 and it has been a steady decline since.. Easy to forget how great he was at his peak.

Legend is thrown about a bit much but big Pete is a legend.

Proper nice guy as well.
God I've hated him when he was at Chelsea.

To get past that midfield and defence took something special, only to face him in the goal, seemed like cheating in a way for me. He looked unbeatable at times, shame about injury since he lost a bit after that and still was world class keeper, that early/young Cech is one of the best I've ever seen! Positioning, reflexes, reading of the game, organization of defenders, calm under pressure, winning mentality, he was complete package and almost impossible to score against, human octopus in a way :D

One of the top keepers in PL. He was very good over the seasons. Won everything.
On top of it, I think pretty much accepted and respected by opposition fans and players

Feels like only yesterday when we saw Hunt absolute do him. At the time I really hated Chelsea with their new found glory and money. Was never quite the same after that injury but it can't be argued. He is a legend at Chelsea and will go down in history. Won everything.

Looking back, I think he peaked too early. The last 5 years have been unspectacular.

But Sir Alex used Cech as an example of why we took the risk in signing De Gea..

So thanks, Cech

I reckon he may have gone to be the best or one of the best we've seen had it not been for that awful injury.

I was thinking about this the other day. If I were to list my top 5 goal keepers in the Premier League era that didn't play for United this guy would be top of the list. Brilliant keeper in his day and an absolute professional. Will never forget that day Hunt caught him in the head and fractured his skull. Lucky to have played for that amount of time considering that. Excellent goalkeeper.

Great, great keeper - a PL icon I think.

Always seems like a good guy as well. Could imagine him becoming a top GK coach in the future.
Agreed. In his prime he was great. Such a shame the injury robbed him of that.

Look at us with 3 names

Come to think of it, do other clubs apart from ours and arsenal produce great keepers?

He won the Golden Glove with Arsenal in the 15/16 season. If anything, looking at the Arsenal defence, that's the most spectacular thing he's ever accomplished :D

Absolutely fantastic GK, he looked like 10 feet in that goal in Moscow. Thankfully Terry obliged :D

Wish him a happy retirement.

Cudicini cech and Cortoius were all top keepers.
Cech is a first and foremost Chelsea legend... what's wrong with me

But really, apart from our team's top 3, the only other keeper that matches their level is Cech IMO.

Courtouis didn't stay long enough to become a legend and as for cudicini, maybe I'm too young to really rate him but I wouldn't put him on that level

A lot of people have mentioned this already in the thread, but time really does fly - Cech retiring...

Definetely one of the best GK's to put on the gloves in PL. The decline in the past few years has been quite uneasy to witness, seeing how great he was before, but will be remembered as the commanding force of Chelseas' backline in THOSE years.

Wonder if he's going to try his ''hand'' at coaching aswell or will he move away from football. Although it seems that every player who at least had a semi-decent career, tries to stay part of that world.

Was a truly brilliant keeper. I don’t think anyone other than Schmikes and The Hay have been better. Better keeper than Van D Saar for my money. Only just though.
