Accumulating the (rest of ) best players isn't the way to beat them.
No?

That being the case, minimal changes to the Madrid side should do it.

Casillas
Maicon - Vidic - Carvalho - Marcelo
Alonso - Schweinsteiger
Ozil
Robben - Ronaldo - Bale

Maicon, Vidic, Schweinsteiger, Robben, Bale are therefore the additions.

The last name on that list, I might add, is purely because I think his fitness, physique and pace could cause Alves and co. enough problems going the other way to hurt them. It's not because he's the best left winger in the World. Likewise Robben, with Maicon in support, can hurt them I believe. I'd have Lahm in reserve as he's a better defender than Maicon.

David Silva would also be waiting in the wings as a creative option or to use on the wing. If all else fails, Drogba is on my bench to play as a battering ram set up for a long ball game.

Is what I would go with.

Four defenders who won't budge an inch is necessary.

A midfield focused on physical pressure, and with Toure and Schewinsteiger you have two players with the mobility to quickly shift from defence to attack.

Robben for his pace and ability on on one, his big game temper and ability to get a goal in isolated situations. Rooney because he is good, but also strong, hardworking and good on the counter.

Drogba to lump it long at and then bring the mobile midfield into play, win freekicks and terrify the defence at set pieces.

Guess I am missing a set piece specialist. Rooney would be the one to be axed if I came up with one, I think. The others fit well into the roles I'd want.

edit: Think, despite his record, I might just go with Ronaldo over Rooney.
You would have to get a quick goal with this strategy though because the fatigue of pressing for 90 minutes would result in a breakdown towards the end of the match.

-----------De Gea*--------------
Lahm - Vidic - Kompany - Cole
-------Essien---Yaya-----------
Nani**-----Modric------Rooney
---------Van Persie------------

* De Gea I would have because he's one of the best shot stoppers right now IMO. Against Barcelona his relative weakness in the air wouldn't be tested so much, which is why I against these wouldn't have Neuer over him.

** The Ronaldo who played for United, if I can choose him..

Goal in the first 45 would do me.

After that, I expect my players to re-enact swan lake and dive around like fannies, winning free kicks all over the place (drogba should shine here), taking ages with them (I don't care that I don't have long throwers either. My throwers will wipe the ball everytime too, Delap style) and generally doing their best to turn this into an american football game.

"won ten yards before play stopped. get in!"

edit: I don't think fatigue is a great concern for this team though. I expect agressive pressing to begin with, and this team should be strong enough to win some battles against barca, but with their physicality and focus on strong defence, they are also ideally suited to sit back and soak up pressure later in the game.

Probably they dont have that greater than 50% chance, but I have faith they will one day. I honestly couldn't name an 11 to beat Barcelona right now, just combine United, with Chelsea with Arsenal with City with Bayern with Inter and you have your team

How to beat Barcelona, with helpful advice from Bruce Lee, Samuel Johnson, and others.

Barcelona have started to dominate European football to such an extent that the drawing of group stages was inconsequential to them being pronounced favourites for the competition. As it is, they are drawn with FC BATE Borisov, FC Viktoria Plzen, and Italian minnows AC Milan. Without being disrespectful to the other two clubs, it’s a racing certainty that Barcelona and Milan will progress, and more than likely that Les Cules will top the group. It’s even plausible to envisage Barcelona going through with maximum points from their games, although they were shocked by Rubin Kazan a few years back, and if they’ve already qualified may field a weakened team in order to keep players fresh for the inevitably long campaign.

Barcelona are the world’s best exponents of the tiki-taka style that is at the moment the pinnacle of footballing sophistication. Pep Guardiola’s side are already at the stage of being regarded as an era-defining team, much like Ajax and Bayern in the 70s, Liverpool in the 80s, Milan in the 90s and Real Madrid of the century’s turn. If their success continues, they will soon be considered statistically if nothing else, as the best club side ever to exist.

So, how on earth do you beat them?

Don’t concentrate on Messi.

“Don’t concentrate on the finger or you will miss all of the heavenly glory” Bruce Lee; Enter the Dragon. Ol’ Bruce wasn’t just a top-notch martial artist and ground-breaking Asian cinema star; he was also a time-travelling football analyst, as proved by the above quote. Messi may well be the focal point of Barca’s striker-less system, but the heavenly glory Bruce was talking about is provided by the exquisite talents of Xavi and Iniesta in midfield feeding the forward three of Pedro, Messi and Villa. If a team puts a man on Messi for 90 minutes, even if he manages to keep the little maestro out of the game (unlikely) he’ll be all over the place positionally and this will allow the other stars in Barca’s galaxy to shine. Barcelona’s motto may be “Més que un club”, but they’re also “Més que un club un home” – More than a one man club. Thanks to Google for that translation. And all the quotes, to be fair.

Stick a man on Busquets.

“There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root.” Wise words from American poet and novelist Henry David Thoreau. A bit of a stretch to refer to Barcelona as evil, I suppose – but I get where he’s coming from. He will have probably called football “soccer”, which is less forgivable. Barcelona may look like a free flowing innovative side, but in fact they are highly disciplined. The midfield playmakers of Xavi and Iniesta (and now Fabregas) may be the ones pulling the strings when attacking, but they don’t do so much of the ball-winning. This is where defensive midfielder Busquets earns his corn. He can’t be described an under-rated anymore, it’s now widely acknowledged what an important role he does for the team – indeed since the days of Makelele and even Deschamps the dirty work guys have been getting the credit they deserve (As an aside, England are have been so poor against top International sides because they’ve lacked a player with this discipline, or not been able to trust one). Busquets will not bomb forward when Barca have possession, he’ll remain at the back with the two central defenders (the full-back are long gone, they spend more time in the opposition half) he gets himself in plenty of space and wait for Barcelona to lose the ball. They very rarely do, and as they pressurise opponents all over the pitch, they force them into mistakes and almost immediately get it back. It’s Busquets who feeds the short balls to Xavi and Iniesta. By denying him the space and time to operate, Xavi and Iniesta will be denied the quick feed, and will have to work harder on the defensive side of their game. There is the problem that he flings himself to the ground whenever anyone gets within 10 feet of him (This is the clue – he doesn’t like people snapping around his heels). For a team like Manchester United playing Barcelona, this would most likely mean asking Rooney to drop back and take care of him – although I can see that ending in a quick couple of yellows due to Busquets’ theatrics; for a team such as Manchester City, Barca old-boy Yaya Toure would be capable of a terrific job on Busquets. Mancini has played the defensive midfielder in a more advanced position, and this would be perfect for snuffing the little shit out.

Have a crack from distance.

“Strike hard, strike fast, strike often” words accredited to William Frederick Halsey, Admiral of the US fleet in the South Pacific. “Bull” Halsey clearly had his doubts about Barcelona ‘keeper Victor Valdes. He’s not even third choice for Spain – Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and Manchester United new-boy are all ahead in the pecking order for the number one jersey. Valdes is suspect. I can only imagine that Barcelona have a policy of promoting Spanish national, preferably Catalans to the team ahead of better players. He’s by far the weakest link in this epic team. Barcelona are often accused of being a little fragile defensively, but looking at a typical back four team sheet of Abidal, Pique, Puyol and Alves, he stick outs like a sore thumb. Granted, Abidal and Alves don’t do so much of the actual defending – in fact Busquets often drops so deep it’s more like a back three with the full-back becoming almost orthodox wingers – but they do their share by keeping opposition wingers pegged back.
Any player getting within range of a shot must be encouraged to do so. It’s the getting there that’s tough I guess! With the full-backs far away, and Xavi and Iniesta rarely dropping back, it should be possible to get half a yard and have a pop. Valdes won’t like it, and he’ll let one in eventually.

Don’t try and play like Barcelona
“Almost all absurdity of conduct arises from the imitation of those who we cannot resemble.” Samuel Johnson. He wrote the dictionary, you know. Arsenal were described as “playing like Barcelona”, until they got beaten by them – dodgy sending off or not. A team in such form, having played together for years in the case of some of La Masia’s graduates, will not be beaten by any imitations. Man for man they have players better suited to the roles, and who are more experienced at doing it.
From September.

He has a point about Busquets, IMO. Underrated and unsung - although disliked - he is the perfect holding midfielder for Barcelona.

What'd you think about this? BS or has he got a point?

More or less. One of the things I think Mourinho got spot on with Inter against them was to not bother marking xavi very much. They just focused on marking all his passing options instead, except for backward passes. He kept possession like he always does, but they stopped him from really advancing barca's play very well.

I think that is what I'd focus on. Busquets can do what he wants since he feeds Xaviesta and I'd focus on stopping those two. Iniesta needs tight marking at all times and xavi needs to be denied good options.

One of the main worries for me is Alves. He is effectively a winger, but you stifle yourself too much if you treat him like one. And Xavi is very good at picking him out.

Nani over Ronaldo due to workrate and Ronaldos less than impressive performances vs Barcelona.

Pepe/Silva over Vidic as they're more reliable when being run at in comparison to Vidic. Barca aren't going to be a threat in the air.

Bale could match Alves for stamina and pace.

Not sure about Yaya either tbh, lacks the stamina to keep with them for 90 minutes.

I'm not a big fan of Rooney on the left, but I think this system suits Anti Barca the best. If not, I'd replace Rooney with Nani.

Other option is Sneijder instead of Modric.

Nice thread but putting these players together for a one off game would spell guarenteed defeat.

No matter how many stars you assemble, they'll be strangers whereas Barca have a well oiled machine who have played together since they were nippers.

Just changed up formation for the sake of argument. The idea of this line up first and foremost is to have a bunch of players that would not be intimidated in any way and would feel they can win the game. The back 3 are all rocks and would certainly keep any striker quiet while one could drop out on messi when he gets into those positions between midfield and defence, taking turns with de rossi occasionally. de rossi's role would be to break up play and he's a good enough player to get the ball movig to thelikes of sneijder and silva who could keep the ball all day and are creative enough to set up the most lethal striker in the world right now and rooney work ethic and all round game makes him a guarantee. schweinsteiger and robben are classic wingers in this sense, up and back the pitch for the full game.

Id be confident that team would win.

According to Sarni, you would have won both Cl finals they dicked you in if only Fletcher had started.
That's correct. First one would have been 1-0 to us if we had him available and the second one would have been 2-2 with us winning on penalties.

Real Madrid's front 6 combined with a better defense should do the trick.

...................Casillas

Lahm...Thiago Silva...Vidic...Cole

...........Alonso......Wilshere

Nani.............Rooney........Silva

.................van Persie

This should ensure quality defending. Silva has some speed. Can't have two slowish CB's. Cole and Lahm are both quick and good defenders who don't get caught out.
Alonso and Wilshere both work hard in midfield and are both very good passers.
Nani and Rooney are used to do help out in defense and are both quality players. Silva would be the playmaker and van Persie is the best striker in the world and has already beaten the Barca defense before. He hassled them good.

yeah but that was a barcelona side without villa, fabregas and sanchez. they also got lucky cause Iniesta didn't play...
and Zlatan was actually inhibiting their play. Awful performance from him in that tie. Pique did better in the 10 minutes he spent up front at the end than Zlatan had at all.
