I don’t get why he’s not already here.

When we hired Solskjaer as caretaker it should have stayed that way.

Not having one single person tell me that Pochettino would have rejected United this Summer gone. Ridiculous not to get him in.

Better late than never though, would get him ASAP

Seriously though I do think its far too soon to be calling for Ole to go, I would say Poch would take at least a season to implement any style of his own to your team.
Do you actually? The situation reminds me a bit of Sherwood and I'm assuming most Spurs fans were happy to see him go.

In response to the other question, I don't think Poch would have left last Summer either. You had a great run in the CL and he seemed fecking delighted about beating Ajax. I get the feeling this season was always going to be a big one for him because if you're not able to reach those heights again then maybe he'll probably want a new challenge, here or abroad or whatever. Last season though? Nah, wishful thinking on our part.

Not really, Sherwood was hated by the majority of fans, while some fans feel it could be time for a change I doubt many would call for his head.

Manchester United hold the record for highest fee paid for a player by any PL team in Pogba, the most expensive defender in the World in Maguire, have spent close to £1 billion in transfer fees in the last decade. (Unfortunately all of it in the wrong hands signing the likes of Sanchez, Di Maria, Schweinsteiger, Lukaku)

If Pochettino backs his ability to build a squad that wins the Premier League (or equivalent domestic league) and Champions League, and presumably he wants to do so, then joining United easily gives him the platform to build that team. The only other clubs that afford him that luxury are Madrid, Barcelona and Man City. At a push, Juventus.

Sure he can do that at Spurs will be your argument, but is a Tottenham playing Champions League football realistically attracting the same talent a Manchester United playing Champions League football? Consider how much more United can offer in wages and the size difference in the clubs.

You may also argue Manchester United are currently a worse team than Tottenham. Absolutely correct. Is that a big turn off for an incoming manager? Less pressure to deliver immediately and the bigger stamp you can put on the team over time in terms of your own players / playing style.

Tie in other factors, if United decide tomorrow “we want Pochettino, as our manager for the next 5 years at least and nobody else and we’ll go all out to get him” - United can offer him double his current wages easily, probably more, I’ve no doubt about that.

So yeah, If Pochettino is as ambitious as I think he is and believes in his own ability as much as I think he does, then I think he joins United. In fact if he didn’t (without another beast aka Madrid lined up) then I’d judge him and he automatically wouldn’t be the right man. And I don’t say this as a red, I say it as if I were in his position. Harry Kane for example would be a different case altogether, I’d strongly expect him to stay at Spurs if this 2019 version of United approached him and would advise him accordingly if I were his agent.

Great post, and I agree. Though I do worry that Woodward, at this point, could put him off.

I don't disagree about the size of United or the pull United has the thing that seems strikingly obvious is, if no manager could turn you down why did Pep and Klopp and why is a manager with such little experience currently in the hot seat? I am honestly not trolling here, it just seems odd to me.

I actually think Poch has been approached by United I just think the timing has been wrong, im not saying he turned you down I just think he said he wanted to stay. He could go to you in the future but I personally believe he will leave England. Poch isn't motivated by money, doubling or tripling his salary wouldn't be that big a pull I don't imagine.

I couldn’t really answer the question, only to say that I don’t have any concrete evidence United have ever gone beyond preliminary talks with any of the names mentioned.

Sir Alex says in his book that he mentioned the United job to Guardiola but it never went beyond one lunch (I think Pep said later he didn’t realise Sir Alex was serious)

Klopp I think was maybe wanted by Liverpool more and United never made a concrete offer. I think it would be different if United went for Klopp at the same time Liverpool did, with the same desire to get him.

With United, I’ve never thought truly in my heart that we’ve appointed the right man. I think Mourinho was meant to be our elite manager and the one Woodward wanted all along, but he wasn’t a fit. Pochettino, if they announced him tomorrow, would be the first one where I’d say “yes that’s 100% unequivocally the right man, let’s go!” And be confident we’d build a title winning team within 3-5 years. As a United supporter, I obviously hope they get the next one right because I don’t think Solskjaer will be the manager come May. Maybe not even by the time Big Ben dongs the beginning of 2020

I think the club are firmly aboard the Ole train.

Until May anyway, or about 20 minutes after he agrees terms with Real.

I think you may have answered a reason why Poch may want to come to United than over others. Klopp chose Lfc over United and at that time, United were the better team. Klopp was obviously interested in us, otherwise why would he have spoken to Ed? But there lies the problem, Ed. Apparently Ed ballsed it up with Klopp by selling him this fantasy Harlem Globe Trotters drea, whereas Klopp just wanted a 'normal' football club.

But going back to Poch, he probably knows he has more chance of success at United than Real. Real is just a horrific club to manage. Look at what happened to Lopetegui and Solari. You're not guaranteed anytime at Real, whereas at United, your more likely than not be given one year, probably two.

If you want Poch you need a clear vision of where you want to go and if Ed can sell that Poch would be interested I am sure. Again it is about timing though. He has stated he wants to manage PSG and the National Team, what you say about Real is correct of course but he is Argentinian and he played and managed in Spain so I would say he would have an interest there. The deciding factor for him will be a project, not personal financial gain.

Red Card for Casemiro!
We should not sack Ole till the end of the season, as long as we are going to finish in the top 6.

Irrespective of how we got here, this squad is terrible and there is no manager available who can walk in and do a better job this season with such sparse quality and the amount of injuries we have. And we have to remember that we have actually seen flashes of good football, good transfers in and out (not enough, but good) and someone who will protect the young players from criticism.

He's not looking like the answer to win trophies or get regular CL, but he could be the answer for us procuring a squad that can, under our next manager. Let's make sure that we get that appointment right, and give him the best squad that we can.

We're in a hole, let's stop digging. The last thing we want is another bungled half-backed and handicapped Ed signing in the dugout.

This will make @Amadaeus happy.

But seriously I think we should keep tabs on the Poch situation.
Just came onto Redcafe right know to post the article after seeing the news. It is in the stars that he replaced Ole.

Ole doing poorly (checked)
Pochettino physically showing that his time at Spurs is coming to an end; lot of resemblance to Klopp final season at Dortmund (checked)
Pochettino has a brilliant record of promoting youth and stabilizing a club (checked)
Pochettino is the best if not the top three best managers in the world currently (checked)
United are one of the top club in the world, so we need the best managers (under evaluation)

Long story short, Pochettino to United is a no brainer. He has a great track record of rebuilding a club and United needs to be rebuild. Pochettino also has a record of taking a team with no investment to the champions league final. United with huge investment couldn’t even accomplished this post SAF. Only hindrance is if he prefers Madrid or somehow believe he can take Spurs further.

NO NO NO, for goodness sake let’s stop changing Managers/Coaches like Pogba changes his hair colour. Poch has won, as a manager, feck all if I’m correct which is the charge aimed at Ole all the time. Mate of mine went on a coaching course for Rugby and one of the speakers was Howard Wilkinson. Mate asked him what makes a good coach and he said ‘Fecking good players’ which says it all.

Would Guardiola make Preston PL Champions? I think not as they don’t have £600m to spend on players. Stuck with Ole for two more windows.

It is not a coincidence that Ole poor form and Poch disinterest has aligned in such a manner. Only Woodward can mess this up.

I believe top four won’t have Spurs this season and this will be one of their worst season as a result of Pochettino presumably having his head turned for a club that can match his ambition. Could you imagine if Klopp decided to stay at Dortmund after the last season he had? Timing is everything. Now is the time for Pochettino to come home to United. His destiny awaits.

Mate your thirst is never ending, demanding the sacking of your coach after a month in, did you listen to Pochs press conference? I doubt very much it will sway your *opinion*. Home......

I would take Poch but he won't make much difference as the manager is not the problem. And for that reason he'd be dumb to come here.

If you looked at my post history, I was one of the few if not the only poster that saw through the honeymoon period that Ole got the job on. I didn’t wanted him made permanent and always reiterated that we wait till the end of the season. Nevertheless, I do not advocate sacking him now because I m not aware of any manager that is available that is worth the hassle of appointing. We would need a manager that could boost morale and implement a better philosophy. I will need to see a list of managers that are available to choose from. If Poch had resigned last summer, he would have been ideal. But, at the moment it is best to stick to Ole and give him another window to see if he can make more good signing to push us into a champions league spot. Then sack him next summer and appoint Pochettino.

Ole will do amazingly to turn it round from here, we all know it.
Poch is making some very strange comments, and is clearly not happy there.

Then you have stories about us buying out clauses etc.

There's clearly been some sort of initial contact made behind the scenes.
We'll see how it all pans out.

I reckon we'll get Poch at some stage not a million miles off - though maybe the summer, after we finish 6th (having had a real burst of form late on to get even that), and Tottenham come 5th.

Then obviously we'll all get hyped up.
Then obviously it'll all be a big let down again.

I would love a Pocchettino thank you very much. Lots of sugar and lots of milk - preferably some cream topping as well. £32M is a bit steep though you greedy little hipster - would you settle for £1?

I don't think the Real job will open up anytime soon considering Barca are losing a few games as well so they are in with a shout for the La Liga. He will be judged on that and Champions League unless they are like 5th by the end.

Real will then probably go for Poch, Klopp or Jose.

Then we should be trying our level best to put the groundwork in place to get him in here in January or next June. I still think he'd be reluctant to work under the current regime, we have to remember that he's still an extremely young manager. Who while being very promising hasn't won any silverware. A bad stint at a club of our size could completely kill his career, just look at Villas Boas these days.

We have a mighty task to convince any (good) manager to join us imo.

Bring Poch in. Perfect fit for United, have always thought so.

Take Ole upstairs, great ambassador and a strategic role to take us forward would be a good fit IMO.

Ed did try get Klopp before Liverpool in 2014, with the whole "Adult Disneyland" pitch and Klopp said he found the proposition "unsexy".

I am actually shocked that despite overwhelming evidences, many fans still don't get it: the club's structure and management is so faulty that managerial changes will only alter little. Bring in Pep or Klopp and not much will change until we fix the basic problem.

Most people here swore last season that Mourinho was the club's problem. Many swore that Ole would transform the club. When Ole won about 10 straight games with Pogba playing out of his skin, it was like a clear confirmation that the problem had always been the former manager. Look at where we are today. Now people are crying AGAIN for another manager.

The Manchester United (post Ferguson) drama continues.
