Does that make a better soundtrack?
Not per se, but if you want to go down that line, a video game soundtrack is now different to that for a movie or a musical album. What Chris Hülsbeck did with the Amiga version of Turrican II I do not think can be contested as being anything other than the greatest piece of music ever to be played by a computer. If you want to go down the road of trying to compare it to other works where the music was pre-recorded, ok, but a lot of his work had also been performed by full blown symphony orchestras as well, you can even buy the CDs if you want. I prefer the Amiga to play them!

And what? What do you want Square Enix contracting Leona Lewis to do something on FFXIII or someone like Hülsbeck?

Don't be fecking stupid! Half of your problem is that you were probably not even in your daddy's ball sack when I was playing that game.
Well, the point was to post (mention/discuss) awesome soundtracks. I don't think that anyone here cares in what device they were played. Even in Tennis for Two there was the 'soundtrack' when the ball touched the paddle but who cares.

I don't like this thread anymore
It's Weaste again.

Too many to list! Vigil's theme from Mass Effect, Watchman's Ease from Oblivion.

Weaste wins again!

Always my first thought when the topic of video game music arises.

I saw an instrumental metal band a few years ago, called TURRICAN obviously enough, who just played the majority of the Turrican 2 soundtrack, replicating the melodies with electric guitars. The idea in theory sounds garbage, but it was pretty special. Seeing the composition actually being played by guitars and by a band as a unit made me appreciate even more just how impressive the T2 soundtrack really is as a piece of music.

Holy shit thats awesome.

Frigate was my favorite level on Goldeneye, Im in no doubt that the music was part of it.

Have a look for Gold N Fly on youtube, they have a rap remix of every level and a lot of them are pretty good.

Yep, that is played through a chip, not streamed off a CD.
That FFVII music in the post you quoted is the same though, it was played through the PlayStation sound chip in a proprietary format similar to midi. Nothing pre-recorded about it.

You are missing the point I was making. MIDI by its very nature is pre-recorded, because everything off that is synthesised, and in that case not very well, but then by doing it that way you have quite a lot of your 650MB of CD-ROM to fanny about making a lot of beeping sounds with don't you? Listen too it, it's a lot of beeping. Sounds like it's coming out of an Atari ST at times, it's quite horrendous and would never be done in such a way today. The thing sounds like crap!

That Turrican soundtrack however is playing in real-time using PCM samples over 7 voices off a 1MB disc!

I think that it's quite nice no? Alock has feck all to do, and I have a bit of peace.
Alock is fine as long as he doesn't do a fanboy (like you but on the other side). He's at-least gives some credit to PS and PC games and he's a true gamer which is the most important thing. I like him. Also his meltdown was fantastic.

This forum is suffering from the lack of Lambo and KingEric7 on the last few weeks.

You are naive as hell. Alock did those things to protect his agenda - he was a paid shill. I don't have an agenda! KindEric wanks off about Nintendo games, and Lambs has his own distorted view on things.

You never fail to amaze me Weaste :D Alock was paid, Lambs has distorted view and you don't have an agenda. Fantastic!

KE7 wanks off about all good games, regardless of platform. Same as most gamers.

Can't get on YouTube to find any of it, but any song from Final Fantasy VII is amazing. Special mention to the boss battle theme and the cosmo canyon music.

Well here is where you and I cross you see. I own basically all of the platforms back to the Atari 2600 and ZX81, so no, I don't have an agenda. I simply comment on what is and what is not technically either brilliant, proficient, or shit. I don't take bits of shit and hold them up. Software is software at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what machine it runs on at the end of the day, it can only do what the machine allows it to do, and this is something that Alock for example always missed. Graphics don't matter, audio doesn't matter, am I right? As for Redlambs, all you see is that we bicker on a public Internet forum, where we actually get along and agree on things 95% of the time. He's interesting in regards to the way he expresses his views on here - he plays the gameplay card with the Wii yet will call the new consoles shit because they can't output the graphics of an nVidia Titan. Ask yourself a question!

It then comes down to the age bracket. I don't see many 8-bit era game sounds posted here, which is a shame really, so I'll post one when I can be arsed, but before I do, I'll point out that the first designs for the Amiga were laid down in 1982. She is of the NES generation and still blew away everything on PC until around 1993, that's how good that hardware was, and especially her sound sub-system. A 1985 Amiga can play your MP3 collection. The demise of that computer is the biggest travesty in the history of consumer electronics. That's one of the reasons why that Turrican II soundtrack is so good (coming out of 1983 technology running off a 1MB disk), you could get a C64 to beep the FFVII pre-recorded soundtrack out almost (memory issues we have here), but it sounds like something coming out of a tin. Paula was the first modern sound chip and that's why the Amiga in terms of sound with a little help from an archaic CPU in the 68000 can out perform Ken Kutaragi's SNES DSP blower!

And don't get clever with me, as I know how Paula works inside and out.

A Crack Habit.
I haven't played the N64 one but Legend of the Mystical Ninja on the SNES had great music, too
Those are pretty good and its certainly worth tracking down Mystical Ninja N64 on emulator if you have the time, its piss easy to complete but quite long and batshit crazy with tons of excellent music.
