Why wasn't Rashford's goal offside. He was in an offside position, came back and played the ball - is it because Garnacho touching it put him back on-side ?

Sorry - but this coming from an offside position has been confusing me all season.
The pass went backwards?

1. Luke Shaw footballing IQ is on Xavi/Modric level. Technically excellent as CB, LB, playmaker, winger. World class player.

2. Aaron Wan-Bissaka. He is my MOTM for being the best version of himself. His progress in ball carrying is just unbelievable. He started the equalizer attack and is not guilty for City goal. Imagine if he does what he did today consistently keeping his ridiculous tackling talent.

3. Fred - always loved the guy. His problem is that he depends on the team to play well. If the team is performing (which is expected under ETH) he is the beast.

4. Eriksen - it's funny that this game demonstrated how important he is for us. Once he lost legs in 2nd half entire United ball moving structure collapsed.

5. Bruno - hate and love as usual. He is our talisman and living spirit of the Cat: moaning and manipulative drama queen. United player who ALWAYS available and ALWAYS contributes.

6.Martial - uninspiring. He suits this team tactically and technically but not mentally.

7. Rashford is number 9. Firstly ETH himself stated that 9 and LW are best roles for him. Secondly, his recent goal record show that he score a goal less than in 90 minutes on CF position.

8. Casemiro, Varane - CL final level consistenly. I even stopped hating Real. Hala Madrid!

9. Garnacho is our LW. I am confident he will perform.

Tactically we were ok in the first half but not how I like to see us play, the last 30 Minutes we tried to play more of our normal game against them and I thought even though we still didn’t have as much ball as city we controlled them.

That said this gives us belief to play our own game against them and everyone else in the future. We have players who need the ball and I’d rather have two proper wingers playing then a cm out wide.

Overall though, get the fk in!!!

Apart from 20 minutes at the start of the second half I thought we looked the most dangerous

They had the ball but created next to nothing

Fred mad that Garnacho didn't pass him there, but man, that's exactly what he shouldn't have done, turning Ake was brilliant, anything else and we don't score there.

That's the kinda winger we need.
He is brilliant.

ETH is the Real Deal! what a display. Proper grit but also a lot of quality in patches too.

If Liverpool played like that they would be saying "master class in tactics by a genius" - let's see what they say for us.

Commentators often talk about having to concentrate and be in your position and do the right thing for every single moment. Often it is just hot air - but today I think it was apt for United - and every player did it.

One of the best things was, I didn't even see Shaw for big parts of the match. Which shows how solid we were.

To be honest it doesn't differ much than Ole's usual style of play against City.

Good this is we are winning against smaller team on consistent basis.

Disagree… passing was slick to beat the press and create the opportunities in the first half. Martial’s hold up play to beat the press in first vs second half the difference.

I can't remember the last night i was this happy. Congrats to all, fantastic result. AWB dreary me even he turned into messi on a mazy run, just loved it. Garnacho ....I love argentinan players they have grit and determination not scared of anyone, just pull the trigger on Enzo release clause ( yeah i know not a chance). Everyone today deserved it. That dressing room will be electric. We have a coach again, thank the Lord.

I liked how we were a threat through most of the game and the midfield played the ball well in the first half. With Martial coming off, Rashford struggling back and Antony brought on it took a while for us to get the shape right. City then started to dominate in attack and got their only shot on target and goal. We got a foothold back in possession after that got the two goals.

They were quite poor for much of it, just rolling it back and forth through Ake. We had quite a good setup positionally most of the game considering how charitable we've been in the past for them.

It was clear we needed Garnacho on and glad ETH quickly fixed it.

The points is all that matters, but in the second we got tired and started constantly sending that long ball towards Rashford. If you do that against City you will never get any possession, and they will create good chances against you.

We tried to do the right things in the first, but got away from that in the second.

Nonsense. We have fight, spirit, warrior-like determination, nous, togetherness, in-game management and genuine patterns of play that hurt the opposition. Ole was pure counter attack after being battered all game. City had one shot on target!

using my last post of the day :(

What’s all this smash and grab nonsense I’m reading. They had 1 shot in target all game.

Also I love zebra, he may be a bit mad but he loves United

Actually looking at the rules I think I'm changing my mind....

2. Offside offence

A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by:
  • interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or
  • interfering with an opponent by:
    • preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
    • challenging an opponent for the ball or
    • clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
    • making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball

Massive win! Fred was great marking KdB and in breaking up play. Varane and Shaw completely pocketed Haaland. I thought AWB had a really good game, that period he turned in Ronaldinho shows that he might have his confidence back.

You'll always get some people finding negatives. Life's too short, we haven't had something like this for a long while..... enjoy it!

Title is on and Arsenal winning it over City is fine. We have good chance to win a cup too.

What a great feeling to be in a title race again. Every match we play suddenly taking on huge significance, just how it should be.

An even first half and good performances across the board (Martial excepted). The second was rough in terms of possession. A draw looked out of the question.
I’m Fred’s biggest critic and I have to
Say he earned his place in the team today. Last 3 to 4 games since including his cameo against wolves he’s been amazing.
The whole team, worked their socks off. Martial hasn’t raised his game so that position is open for the new guy.
Brilliant win. We played better going behind in that 2nd half. City 1 attempt on goal from 100 mill sub for all their possession. Every player bar Martial at least 8/10. Now Eric needs to teach the team to match the likes of City in possession. Surely Weghurst walks into Martials place

People who are complaining about Martial, it's not a coincidence that we couldn't hold onto the ball in the second half after he went off. He was great and I don't get all this 'everyone but Martial' bs. He was great until he came off and he starts in these games cos he improves us massively.

What a smash and grab in that second half

Can clearly see how much we struggle without Martial/another technical hold up striker under pressure. We looked the better team in that first half and then until the Bruno goal we couldn't do anything. What a win.

This, 100%

On the first goal, Rashford 100% affects the play — since a pass is made to him. That is not grounds to call an offside.

Then it is of course close, but seriously, if Rashford isn’t there could any City player get to the ball? The defenders? No. Ederson? No. I am fairly certain that if the pass is just made blind hoping that Rashford is “not” there, the exact same thing happen.

I think it’s those last 2 bullet points which make the offside rule confusing, because they’re very much open to personal interpretation.

In the Rashford case, I’d argue number 3 does apply simply by the fact he was chasing the ball down to the last second, but I suppose it depends on how you define “an action that impacts on an opponent”.

Anyway, I’m buzzing that we won, but I know I’d be fuming if it went the other way.
