EL D Europa League Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Manchester United 2:2 Sevilla

Post-match discussion

Thu, 13 April 2023

What a shit, unlucky night.
Injuries, bookings, own goals.

Yeah, sums it up for me. The chances of both of our centre halves getting injured AND conceding two of the jammiest own goals in the entire history of the Europa League at the same time are quite miniscule. Play that game again twenty times and nineteen times we would win comfortably (and we'll win next week).

F*cking disastrous end to the match.

The defensive mistakes and injuries will be covered in detail I'm sure but this killed me, when Weghorst had the chance to lay the ball perfectly to a number of teammates to make it 3-0 and for some reason he plays it to Malacia on his weak foot, who has to take a touch onto his left and the chance is gone.

What the f*ck?! If you're going to lay it off to Malacia (who's probably the only outfield player less likely to score than Wout himself) at least put it on his left foot!

Antony hits the post at 2-0

We lose both cbs

Sevilla score 2 OGs

feck sake

TBF, most of us knew we weren't a top team at this time.
We did well against Barcelona, but beating 2 good teams in a row seems out of our reach.
We can still do it in Spain. Gotta go for a 1-0 win.
Our back four will most likely be Wan Bissaka, Lindelöf, Maguire, Malacia. We aren't keeping a clean sheet in Spain.

And without both Bruno and Rashford goalscoring looks unlikely, too. This tie is done.

Bringing on Weghorst and Elanga was also ridiculously stupid.

Like come on Erik. You can make subs to keep people fresh without going down to 9 men.

Not all his fault mind. Everyone was shite after 35th minute. Compared with the first 30. All over the pitch they were lazy, sloppy, brain dead and on autopilot.

He has to try and give them minutes somewhere. We'll need everyone if we want anything from the rest of the season.

It's also not those players' fault that we conceded 2 of the worst OGs you'll ever see.

They've got the hex on us for sure
Sevilla are most shit team of chancers I’ve ever seen. Definite bargain with the devil.
Ultimately though it’s the result of a criminally stupid excess of games and a poor performance by one or two players. And a lack of intelligent investment over several years. We’ll get there, but as we all should be capable of understanding, it’s gonna take two or three seasons. We fans should retain a bit of perspective.

Why did Weghorst lay up Malacia over Eriksen, what a bizarre decision that was.

I'm not as annoyed as I probably should be. Too worried about Licha. I just hope he recovers well.

But there is no doubt that we threw it away. Wasted so many counters in the second half. Without Rashford and Garnacho we have no threat in behind. I know Antony came close, but he should've tried the pass at least once. But he was miles better than his opposite winger. I can't even describe how ineffective Sancho and then Elanga were. Our second string are simply not good enough.

Funnily enough even without Bruno and Rashford I'd say we have a good shot of winning in Spain. But I don't think we can win that and the FA cup semi. The squad is too thin. I hope I'm wrong.

Folks just sometimes you have got to accept that Maguire is a jink for Man Utd and has to be moved on in the summer. When we have to rely on him situations just go to dogshit. Maguire is Man Utd's Green Kryptonite end off.

Sickening but there's still the fact that this Sevilla side were utter crap for most of the match but we should have put them to the sword far earlier. Dreadful defending from Malacia, who was struggling all match, and a freak own goal from a guy who I think is cursed at this point.

We had to get that third goal to kill the tie. :(

At least Casemiro didn't get booked. We're by no means out, but that 2nd half performance was really concerning, plus Martinez injured could have ramifications for the rest of the season. Hopefully Shaw comes back soon

I’d be very confident they don’t score in Spain. We may score more own goals, but I don’t think they will. They have absolutely nothing going forward.

Absolutely buzzing at the end of the first half, thought we should be 5 nil up. Once again we don't punish teams when dominant. I see Maguire coming on for the second half, our play is instantly slower and more lethargic. Martinez injury is a killer and really jeopardizes the rest of the season.

ETH subs were poor, completely killed our attack.

He was getting grief for not taking Rashford off last week when he got injured and now he's getting grief for taking players off to rest them when we were cruising. The man can't win with some people.

Two freak goals and an unexpected injury.

Bad result but Sevilla didn't look a threatening side until we went to 10.

He wasn't getting any grief off me last week.

Also cruising? What game were you watching? We were only fecking 2 nil up. Not 3 or 4 mate, the subs were ridiculous and gave Sevilla a platform back into a tie that should have been put to bed tonight.

The amount of times this season we just piss about once we've got a lead and play like we're 4-0 up is ridiculous. We aren't good enough to do that. Combined with Ten Hag's frankly ridiculous (and rather arrogant tbh) substitutions, and we brought all of this bollocks on ourselves really. Idiots.

Big time, no doubt motivated Sevilla.

Cruising at 2-0 with 10 minutes to go then we proceed to shit the bed and concede 2 own goals, you couldn’t make it up. The real kicker being Martinez going off injured with what looks like a season ender. We’ve got it all to do now when we could’ve had the tie sewn up tonight. Feck sake!

Tbh not too bothered about the 2-2 as I still think we'll go through but the Martinez injury is the big worry.

The odds of us winning in Spain are very small.
MUFC rarely win in Spain.
We've got a chance, but it is very very slim.

Maybe I’m naive but I genuinely don’t know why people get at ten Hag for things like this.

We’re 2-0 up and he’s trying to manage a thin squad / protect certain players from fatigue. Had martial stayed on and got a knock people would have cursed him. It’s not his fault we have half a squad of sub par players ffs.

Absolutely agree he should be able to rely on whomever he brings in to do a job, players need resting with the amount of games thy we have. It’s not ETH fault that the players went AWOL.

We’re not winning over there, this team is full of bottle jobs that constantly throw the towel in when the chips are down.

our away form has been dreadful all season

I present a bet.

Everyone saying we go out to them next week gets a ban if we beat them.

They win, I take the ban.

Sevilla weren't creating anything. We still seemed the most likely to score. Should have made it 3-0 with the Malacia chance.

Weghorst as god awful as ever. Can help us throw away any result! We should have just brought Pellistri on, switched Antony left and stuck Elanga down the middle. Basically left us down to 9 men at the end.

Malacia as well, at least it's a learning experience for him I suppose.

That was one of the worst robberies I've seen in years, we should have been out of sight, lost both our first choice CBs to injury, and conceded 2 of the flukiest own goals I've ever seen.

Absolute freak last few minutes that cost us the win and also a bad bad injury for one of our best players. Horrible game. Not looking forward to the next games now if we're missing Varane and Martinez...

I just can't understand how we can't finish our chances like most competent teams do.

Liverpool put 7 past us, never stopped playing, never went for the fancy hollywood highlight reel pass. Just pure effective finishing.

Whereas we go 2-0 up and try the illogical passes to set up players while ignoring players in other positions.

We dont need to go down to 10 men just to give Elanga some 'run around' time. And we already know having Weghorst up front means the chances of us scoring go to almost nil. At least with any cross or cut back.

What are you talking about? We had 11 players on the pitch and there was only 10 minutes left. Martinez getting a freak injury is why we went down to 10 men.

We haven’t lost in Spain this season. We’ve also won two of the three matches we’ve played there this season if we’re playing that game.

Finishing the game with a Elanga, Weghorst and Pallestri attack….yikes.

The result was shit but the injuries are worse, we’ll struggle in the coming weeks.
