Potential striker targets for the summer

With or without Lukaku playing in good form, I feel this team would greatly benefit from having another top level striker. Having wealth in options up front was Ferguson's secret to success. We have Rashford but his level is squad option in that position, we need more than that.

Who's the best fit for us in the summer? A false 9 type with great technique should be no.1 on the list, we need a striker that can properly play the game beautifully.

I would play Martial as a 9 & go for Insigne to be our LW.

Obviously, what we do depends on which manager we have next season.

Martial is nailed on for that left wide position, he's proved himself a lot more on the left than he has up front for me.

Ciro Immobile would be the perfect striker. His movement, finishing and hold up play is prime. Very good with his feet

Martial is much better on the left... We need a poacher as a No. 9 especially someone who will 9 out 10 score when put in one on one with the goalie. We should have scored atleast 2 more goals today. Rashford is just not good enough to lead the line. Lukaku has been abysmal... glad to see him dropped. I would like us to try Sanchez upfront before we consider shipping him out. But Martial has to be the third person on the team sheet after De Gea and Pogba.

Dybala is the dream.

Cavani would also be an improvement on Lukaku IMO.

But I think we would benefit from having a good backup striker like Mandzukic or Arnautovic.

I think Martial is better on left, he can score finesse shots, type of striker we need to target must be good on 1v1, like RVN.

I'd give Sanchez a chance to play up top before bringing anyone in

I'd like to see him there too, at least until the summer, but if he's not getting a game there now when will he ever? We need more than Sanchez in that position anyway in the long term.

Sanchez.
Martial, Sanchez and spend all the moneies on another attacker with raw pace and trickery.
Martial Sanchez Dembele/Costa.
Looks good to me.

Cavani. Brilliant at everything. Getting older but can do a job for us.

Completely depends who is in charge, what formation we will play etc.

I think we have the players already. The only way we upgrade our attack is by offloading Lukaku, and I can't see the club doing that anytime soon. I would say Greenwood is one of the biggest talents in recent times and he will break through in the next couple of years too. I would prefer to see:

Martial ----
---- Sanchez

Pogba ---- Fred
Shaw ------- Pereira ------- Dalot

Lindelof - Smalling - Bailly

De Gea
Then we'd have Lukaku, Rashford, Lingard and Mata in reserve for the two positions up front , with Lingard and Mata also able to play in a deeper midfield role.

There's quite a shortage of quality CF's around. We could look to sign Cavani or Lewandowski but both would be short term fixes.

Really feel it was meant to be Greizmann. Lukaku with Greizmann behind him, with Martial & Rashford competing for the left forward role. When that fell apart, we went for Sanchez... but right now I think we could do worse than Messi.

I'd like someone a bit more fluid, I liked the interchanging of Martial and Rashford today. I'd go for Chiesa and promote someone like Greenwood for a central striker role.

Hopefully we have a new manager come the summer and then someone like Dybala in a fluid front 3 would be a great option for striker.

who ever it be for the god sake it should be the right one next time...6 years of blunders must stop ..No signings are better than some dud ones.
It pains to see invest that much on Matic/Lukaku/Alexis and see them play like that.Cant blame manager here if they are incapable of doing few basic things right ..

I just put on FM and checked for strikers and it's actually shocking how few attractive and realistic options there are for the striker position.

We needed someone like Mandzukic in the summer to rotate with Lukaku.

I very much doubt we'll be offloading Lukaku anytime soon new manager or otherwise. I'd like us to get someone experienced in and then we can rotate between them Lukaku and Rashford based on form.

Much like last summer, I think we might have to gamble on striker targets and hope they come good — which can be applied to Rashford (who'll cost nothing) and Martial if he's moved to a central position, so maybe we should sit tight and keep faith. Someone like Cavani is a bit unrealistic and getting up there in age, Džeko could produce for a season or two if United play to his strengths but he would be no more than a stop-gap, Higuaín is only on loan at Milan and could be a good option despite his flaws, Icardi is a brilliant producer but has certain limitations — none of them would be ideal like Bayern signing Lewandowski or Barcelona signing Suárez and instantly having a World Class package at 9.

Beyond them, you could gamble on the likes of A. Silva, Piątek, Jović, Gómez — a couple of them have the potential to develop into good long-term additions under the right coach. Don't see the point in signing a pure backup for £25-30 million when Jović, for instance, has a reasonable clause in his contract and is only 20 years old with a fairly complete skill set for strikers. Unless the clause is specifically designed for Frankfurt, who have the option to buy him outright.

He'll require a ton of money to get him from Inter. He's still poor in the build up and not really what we should be aiming for....
We need a forward who gives people hell in the 18 with movement, runs and use of physique. Else we can as well look for a Giroud or go cash in on Benzema if we want a build up merchant

Wish we went for Auba instead of Lukaku, but that ship has sailed...
I agree

Icardi with Puss in boots going the other way.

The era of good strikers will return as Messi and Ronaldo start to diteriate therefore for now i’d Stick with developing Martial and Rashy.

This is a tough one as Mason Greenwood is as sure thing of a young player that I have seen in years.

Think Lukaku will stick around, but be ousted from within, with either Sanchez, Rashford or Martial taking the central role, and Greenwood also becoming a factor.

I think that if we make an attacking addition, needs to be a genuine threat from the right. That said, if Lukaku is sold, I’d be all for adding a striker. I’m a fan of Arkadiusz Milik, although he’s had two bad knee injuries so not Sure what he’s currently like. De Laurentis also stands between him and us.

Got an eye on how Richarlison does this season at CF too.

Two years ago I said Vardy and Mandzukic, instead of and for what we paid for Lukaku.

I would still go for Vardy this January to add something else to our attack, might be good for Rashford to go on loan in the opposite direction

For the summer if Lukaku leaves, maybe a experienced prolific goalscorer like Cavani or Lewandowski to tie us over til Rashford steps up (if he does)

Rashford is good enough with Martial and Sanchez in a fluid front three. We need a reliable back up who can change games off the bench like chicharito.

Great post, as always.

That list did remind me of Duda though. My Slovakian pal I play football with was banging on about him this season. I remember him being hyped when at Legia, had some injury problems, but looks to be behind him. He could take matas role today and be more of a goal threat. I’m not sure we necessarily need a true no 9, just more of a goal threat from all 3 forwards.

I don't think Rashford is good enough for a leading role as striker for us, he did a better job than Lukaku today but there's still question marks over certain aspects of his game. That being said he's still a valuable member of the squad, and can still rack up a nice amount of appearances and goals, like Chicharito, coming off the bench and filling in when needed.

If we want a more technical option to add to the mix who wouldn't cost mad money and be young enough to not need to play every game, Piątek and Maxi Gómez look like promising options from the bits I've seen.

Rashford.

Have you guys seen how he's been playing for England? He's at the level we need. Can we finally be a club that gives youth a chance? Spurs played Dele Alli in the first team when he was 20 or so, Liverpool are playing TAA and Gomez in the first team and Sane, Sterling and Stones played for City despite being pretty young.

We're supposed to be the club that cares about youth, aren't we? Give Rashford his chance up front, Dalot on the right too, games for Pereira, and Martial/Shaw on the left side can see us be top class in the near future.

If we need someone with decent movement up front, then Timo Werner is a pretty good option. This season he's been playing some games at LW but he's basically a CF with a decent goalscoring record.
