Cheers, mate. I was wondering if you could give us some info on the lads taking the step up this summer. Where they play, how they play, how highly you rate them etc. I know it's a big ask so feel free to not bother. It does seem to be a very high quality intake.

The highlighted games may well be a mixture of first team and reserve players as they are so close to each other and on the same day. So these fixtures may not include some of the newer talent coming through to the reserve team ranks.

Till the manager (SAF) decides he wants to keep at the club and who he either sells or loans out, predicting the reserve team is quite difficult. The front two for example, for the reserves could well end up being Rossi and Campbell again, with Brandy getting a couple of games here and there. Yet, Brandy may well get more games than expected if both Rossi and Campbell are loaned out. It's that sort of situation. The question is then, what positions needs filling and who does so. Phil Marsh played full back for a season and yet he was a striker by trade, so it does depend on who's still at the club and what positions are left blank.

Pre Season

Presumably some first teamers involved in international games in close season (eg Heinze among others)as well as underage tournaments (eg Richardson and others) will be given extra time off and presumably the "Antwerp" guys will also have extra time as they were involved post "regular" season. Add injuries and the pre season tour to Asia which will probably involve 18 to 20 players and its likely these Man Utd Xl teams will be a bit understrength even for a "reserve" team.....probably drawn from around 20-25 lesser known reserves and upwardly mobile academy players.
could be a bit difficult when the club is involved in two games on one day...although some first teamers will be back for them.

If you include the new intake at the academy, there are 70 players currently on the club's books (including new signings). I doubt there will be any problems with 2 games on the same day as alot of the youngsters will be sent out on loan after the friendlies have taken place.

Yes I know what you mean but Im thinking quality rather than actual numbers.
United reguarly have around 45/46 professionals. With recent releases the total at the moment is around 43 which will be added to by 4 or 5 new pros and new signings but a couple of players are speculated to be leaving (Richardson? Smith? being only the latest speculation). But prolly as usual the Professional total will settle at around 45.
There will be 20 plus Academy players which will bring the total to close to your 70.
However additional leave for the internationals and others and the Asian tour will eat into the QUALITY of the available players.

i think there'll be relatively strong sides for the Glentoran/Dunfermline games - should be a pretty much full-strength squad by then even considering those with extended holidays. bit different for the Peterboro/Doncaster games as the Community Shield is on the 5th, but there should still be relatively strong sides out - the Asia tour won't impact at all as it'll be finished about a week before the end of July if memory serves so everyone will be back.

Fergie isn't gonna play a weak side against his son's team even if it is the day before the Community Shield is he?

I dunno. I think Fergie would feel more duty-bound to field a strong side at Wembley than at London Road - i can't see the fact that his son is managing Peterborough will really affect Fergie's approach (he's hardly one for sentiment after all). preparing in the best possible way for the new season will be his main focus, and playing star players twice in two days probably isn't ideal. it's also worth noting that on the list of first-team friendlies on the official site, Peterborough isn't included (or wasn't last i looked).

that said, we've got tickets for the Peterboro' game and they cost us £20-25 each, so it'll be a tad annoying if it's a reserve side we put out.

Bloody hell, what a fantastic match report! ;)

Thank you, someone know the line ups? And the goal scorers? And I also would like to know who played well. Somebody was there? :D

United fielded a predominantly reserve based team in the friendly with Hyde United at Ewen Fields yesterday.

United started the stronger and had several early chances before a goalkeeping error saw Frazier Campbell nip in to score United's opener. Shortly later, Sam Hewson ran on to a through ball from Campbell to double the Reds lead. Hewson had replaced Michael Barnes a little earlier after Barnes pulled a muscle. United had several opportunities to increase their lead but a mix of poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the score down.

Half-time: Hyde United 0 Manchester United 2

James Chester replaced Richard Eckersley at HT as Hyde started to get back into the game. Zieler made a couple of good saves in the second period, but to be fair the game had become a little stale. A small crowd of 361 then had something to cheer late in the game when Hyde scored. United then upped the pressure and had numerous chances but all were wasted. Adam Eckersley brought out a cracking save from the Hyde keeper when his shot was tipped around the post for a corner.

Final Score: Hyde United 1 Manchester United 2

Team: Zieler, R. Eckersley, A. Eckersley, Cathcart, Shawcross, Jones, Barnes, Lee, Brandy, Campbell, S. Evans.

Subs: Lea, Woods, Chester (2), Hewson (7)

Richard Ecks came back on for Campbell late in the game.

Thank you. Maybe Campbell can be loaned out to a Championship side this year? Would've been great.

bit surprised Fraizer hasn't gone on tour with Saha, Ole and Rossi not going for various reasons. definitely should be looking at a loan to a Championship side i think.

is there any word on friendlies for the U18's yet? i remember last year the official site publicised them, nothing as yet though.

Rossi to make Moss Lane appearance

GIUSEPPE Rossi is the most high-profile name in the Manchester United squad for tonight's friendly against Altrincham.

The 20-year-old striker was not included in his club's squad for the tour of Asia due to his involvement in the European Under 21 Championship with Italy.

A hot prospect for the future, Rossi has made just five first team appearances for the Premiership champions but scored nine goals in 19 games while on loan at Parma in Italy's Serie A last season.

Also included in United's squad for tonight's game is highly-rated youth team captain Craig Cathcart, and reserve team captain Kieran Lee, who scored a stunning late winner for the Reds in their 2-1 Carling Cup third round win over Crewe last year.

The full squad for the game is: Ron Robert Zieler, James Chester, Adam Eckersley, Michael Lea, Ryan Shawcross, Ritchie Jones, Febian Brandy, Kieran Lee, Fraizer Campbell, Giuseppe Rossi, Sean Evans, Craig Cathcart, Gary Woods, Rick Eckersley, Sam Hewson.

interesting. hard to see why he couldn't have gone on tour if he was ready to play tonight, especially as we've only two strikers out in Asia.

yeah, i assumed as much. still seems a little odd to me, but hopefully that is the sole explanation.

we won 2-1 tonight anyway it seems, going off what's being said on an Alty forum. sounds like our first was an o.g.

yeah, the official site says Hewson also
Both official site and other post are incorrect. Kieran Lee scored United's second goal. The teamsheet on the night had the wrong numbers so the announcer assumed it was Hewson.

Only other amendment is that R. Ecks came on for A. Ecks and NOT Rossi....

U/18 friendly v Bury was postponed until the 24th.

Fleetwood Town 1 Man United Reserves 1:

Another excellent crowd of 2446 braved the conditions to see two teams put on a fine display of passing football in the rain. The draw was a fair result. Man Utd had good spells of possession, but it was Fleetwood who grabbed the first half lead with a Milligan special from the edge of the box, after a foul on a 'fired up' Richie Allen.

Man Utd dominated the early phases of the second half, helped by the enforced substitutions of Smith and Mercer, but Town came back strongly towards the end only to see Rossi, United's only real threat, finally get the goal his play deserved. More later.

Rossi on target for Reserves

The Northern Premier Football League club took the lead in the first half and, despite a Rossi-inspired United side dominating possession in the second half, looked destined for an unlikely victory.

However, the Italian Under-21 international, who has returned to the club after loan spells with Newcastle and Parma last season, finally got the goal his performance deserved in the 89th minute to claim a draw in front of around 2,500 fans.

United: Zieler, R.Eckersley, Chester, Shawcross, Lea; Lee, Jones (Campbell, 46), Hewson, S.Evans (A.Eckersley, 46); Brandy (Cathcart, 70), Rossi.

Port Vale game finished 3-2 to the home side:

VALE v MAN UTD

A bumper crowd saw Vale take on a young Manchester United outfit at ValePark in the first of three pre-season games to be played at home before the big kick off.

All five goals were scored within the first half hour of the game, but the visitors played some neat stuff at times, with Gueseppi Rossi in particular catching the eye.

The kick off was delayed for ten minutes due to crowd congestion outside, but it was worth the wait as the home side stormed into a 3-0 lead in the opening 16 minutes.

Former United trainee Danny Whitaker struck in the 2nd minute, lifting the ball over Ron-Robert Zieler in the United goal in style from 20 yards.

The in-form Luke Rodgers hit an unstoppable shot inside the 'keeper's right hand post to double the advantage after 14 minutes and the visitors almost hit back immediately.

Joe Anyon made a terrific save at the feet of the impressive Frazier Campbell, before Miles cleared the loose ball and Vale went straight on the attack.

There may have been no sign of Cristiano Ronaldo at ValePark, but the step-over was there in the shape of Shane Tudor, who advanced on the United goal showing all the tricks before firing past Zieler for Vale's third goal.

Rossi showed his class when he ran at the Vale defence and slotted the ball into the corner of the net to make the scoreline more respectable from the visitors' point of view on 20 minutes.

Then the same player clipped the ball through intelligently to send Campbell clear and the striker took on the ball before calmly firing past Anyon.

Martin Foyle made several changes during the second half, with trialists Gareth Evans, Marco Adaggio and Callum Willock all making an appearance.

Port Vale: Joe Anyon, Justin Miller, Mark McGregor, George Pilkington, Colin Miles, Danny Whitaker, Paul Harsley, Shane Tudor, Paul Edwards, Akpo Sodje, Luke Rodgers. Subs: Chris Martin, Jason Talbot, Robin Hulbert, Keith Lowe, Joe Cardle, Charlie O'Loughlin, Marco Adaggio, Callum Willock, Gareth Evans.

Manchester United: Ron-Robert Zieler, Richard Eckersley, Adam Eckersley, Michael Lea, Ryan Shawcross, Richard Jones, Kieran Lee, Sam Hewson, Frazier Campbell, Guiseppe Rossi, Michael Barnes. Subs: Gary Woods, Jimmy Derbyshire, Oli Norwood, Danny Drinkwater, Corry Evans, Sean Evans, James Chester, Craig Cathcart.

Attendance: 7,103 including 1,364 visitors
