Well we have spent 90 mil on a player that hasn't lived up to the hype since he came in. The point is there is no signs of the club's progress just because the club bought a 100+ mil player

I don't think that anyone thinks that. That ridiculous, unbeatable Barcelona team for example wouldn't have been a shadow of what it was without its academy players (Messi, Iniesta, Xavi) who cost less combined in transfer fees than a Mars bar.

But it's a simple inevitability that United will be forced to break the £100m mark in a transfer fee over the next few years with how the market is going. It's just going to happen unless they get ridiculously lucky with youth players coming through the academy and young players signing (Amad, Pellistri etc) turning into World Class players.

I can agree with that. But I hope that football introduces some kind of salary cap because it is getting ridicilous. Can we really say that Maguire is better than Bruce or that Grealish is on the same level as Gazza?

You've been doing the equivalents of 100m transfers for 20 years.
Not sure about that. When we were spending maximum £30m on the likes of Rio and Rooney, Madrid were already spending £50m on Zidane.

There is Pogba 5 years ago which was a record but that’s a modern transfer and it was £89m not £100m which is the question in this thread.

Problem with a transfer fee cap would be that more and more players would run their contracts down. We're already seeing that happen more now because agents make more money from it.

One thing i wouldn't mind seeing is realistic transfer release clauses being mandatory for every player. Then like with the Grealish deal, clubs can just say "nope, meet the clause or no deal" and things move quicker.

How you decide what "realistic" is, how you implement it and all those finer details, i haven't thought about.

I don't get this obsession with transfer amounts:
- it's not your money
- 100mil doesn't mean jack shit, it's not a barometer or something, it's the same as 68 or 168 million
- the price of a player doesn't reflect its quality
- if clubs make more money these days, they should also spend more, be it on one or 150 players.

100m fees will be reserved for the oil clubs.

It's more likely the whole system collapses and players sign for a couple of years and the players trouser the massive fees in future.

People have repeatedly said this since 1m for Trevor Francis.

To 5m to Sutton, 7m Cole, 8.5m Collymore, 15m Shearer etc etc

It will happen in the next 4-5 years easily. By then everything will have moved forward 20-25 million compared to prices nowadays. So a Maguire, Sancho, Pogba equivelant would be around 100 mill give or take easily. Covid has altered prices, but this was only a blip. In fact it might have helped us with Verane cost.

I love the optimism off some that Haaland is a shoe in to come here next season. Lets hope you are all right.
