Stam - genuinely the best defender in the world at the time
RVN - best outright striker in the world, but he didn't quite fit the team
VDS - second only to the best keeper of all time
RVP - if only he had more than one season under SAF
Blind - criminally underrated
Van Der Gouw - he was an able second choice but should never have been given more than that
Cruyff - the name brought with it unrealistic expectations
Buttner - we had such high hopes after those first appearances
Fosu Mensah - some good games but unlikely to get many more here
Memphis - didn't make it here
Chong - wont make it here

I have no idea how good Arnold Muhren was.

My Order of Dutch United Players over the Years based on Impact:

1 - Edwin Van Der Sar - Won 4 Premier League Titles, 1 Champions League, 1 FIFA Club World Cup and a League Cup during his 6 years. He was Mr Reliable at United and formed part of the nucleus of the spine of United's formidable team of the late 2000's especially when he was 40 when he retired. If only we got him when he was younger as he is definitely the 2nd greatest keeper after The Great Dane during Sir Alex's tenor at the club and cemented his name in history with that penalty save that secured us our 3rd European Cup/Champions League.

2. Jaap Stam - Treble Winner, 3 Premier League Titles including 1 FA Cup and Champions League - 3 and a bit years at the club and was the rock in the defence that conquered not just Europe but also the premier league too. Like Sir Alex said that Stam shouldn't have been let go and we probably would have seen the best of him in a defence that lasted a decade if he hadn't been sold.

3. Ruud Van Nistelrooy - One of the greatest goal scorers in our history, pity that he ended up leaving the way he did but with 150 goals in 219 games left a legacy hard to fulfil. Left with a Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup. Ruud showed what passion, heart and fire was during his stint with the club although short his legacy will always be remembered.

4. Robin Van Persie - Although he was the man who delivered our 20th and last league title in Sir Alex's final year in charge, the reason I put him 4th is that after Sir Alex left he was ruined under Moyes and Van Gaal. He didn't have that passion he did whilst playing for Sir Alex, but still that Free Kick against the Bitters and the Hat Trick that secured us the 20th Title will secure his legacy for all time. It is just a pity we didn't see another season of Robin with Sir Alex as you could tell he knew how to get the best out of him.

5. Daley Blind - Mr Versatile when at United, played where ever he was needed and never complained. Always gave his all and ended his United career with an FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League. Not bad especially during our poorest times since Pre Sir Alex at the club and was greatly undervalued at United, I always thought they let him go too soon.

6. Raimond Van Der Gouw - United's very reliable number 2 who never complained being in the Great Dane's shadow, spent 6 years at United and won 2 Premier Leagues, FA Cup and a Champions League. Not bad for a number 2 probably should have been given more of a chance after The Great Dane left.

7. Alexander Buttner - So much potential that Sir Alex seen in him but he just couldn't fulfil what Sir Alex saw in him, spent 2 season's at United but did end up with a Premier League Title. I still think he could have gave so much more.

8. Jordi Cruyff - the son of the legendary dutch man, came to United with so much on his shoulders, but injuries and other factors cost him what could have been a decent career with us, spent 4 seasons at United but left with a Premier League title won in 96-97 season.

9. Timo Fosu-Mensah - Still too early to decide what his imprint will be with our club, still has so much potential and been unlucky with injuries. Bonus is he is still young and has an FA Cup and Europa League under his belt.

10. Arnold Muhren - Won an FA Cup with us after his transfer from Ipswich Town, didn't see the player he was but gave his all every game during the 80s and will always be remembered as the 1st Dutch Man of United.

11. Memphis Depay - Probably someone I really hyped up after watching him in the dutch league, but his attitude cost him what could have been a good career with us.

12. Tatith Chong - Still very early on in his career, not being able to bring his U21 Form to the 1st Team, gone on loan to get 1st team experience and hope he comes back a better more confident player and he still has so much potential.

Somewhere around Blind...not as good as the first four but a lot better than all the others.

I cant believe Blind made more appearances for us than Stam.

That was the thing that infuriated me most about Jose, he said on arrival that he would only play specialist players in their position yet he did anything but. That's why he sold Daley or so he claimed anyway.

Anyway VDS, Stam, RVP/RVN is a great spine, hopefully Donny can earn his place among those names as the man in midfield.

I'd say RVN fit the team very well at first, particularly with Beckham firing in the crosses. Without RVN there's no chance of winning the title in 2002-3. I agree that once Ronaldo and Rooney came to the fore, RVN looked more of a misfit.

1-4 goes without saying with order of merit debatable. My order would be the following:
1. RVN goal machine
2. Stam tough as nails
3. VDS Cool, carm and collected,. Great keeper!
4. RVP short period but the impact!
With 5th spot a toss up between Muhren and Blind. I'd give it to Muhren!
Don't know if my imagination is running away with me but I see no reason why VDB shouldn't break that top 4. Good times ahead!

Arnold Muhren was a calm and quiet, but a totally competent player. He oozed class.
Definitely up there with VdS, RvN, RvP and Jaap Stam, as the best of the Dutchmen to have played with us so far.

Van Nistelrooy was a goal scoring machine, but really did not suit the style of play. Or perhaps it was just a transitional period as it is when the one striker formation became popular. Whatever the reason, despite his goals, he seemed to hinder us, as we had some very lean years (by the standards of the time) but as an individual player he was probably number one. His moody attitude, especially towards the end, has marred him a

VDS was about as solid a ‘keeper as they come and one of the least confrontational / argumentative / controversial Dutchmen of the era. He wasn’t as spectacular as DDG with his shot stopping, but he was far more reliable and safe on crosses and organisation. Not far off Schmeichel overall in my opinion.

It’s tough between Stam and RVP but I think Stam takes bronze. He came to United under a lot of scrutiny and immediate criticism, but he didn’t let it bother him and quickly became regarded as one of the best centre backs in the world and took absolutely no shit. Not sure what went on a couple of years later but a slight dip in form / arguments behind the scene and he was gone before his time. Never reached his United heights again.

RVP takes fourth and, similarly to the man before him, didn’t have enough time at United. Amazing player at Arsenal and carried it on at United. A real shame he wasn’t here, at his peak, for 6-7 years. A joy to watch in his first season and he seemed to love it too.

Ruud is in my top 10 favourite Utd players of all time but if I had him first it’d be for nostalgia reasons more than anything.

Van der Sar - most trophies won,was a huge influence on our team.
Stam - Treble winner, best defender in the world at the time.
Ruud - goal machine. I loved the way he played and he’d literally score from any angle with any part of his body.
RVP - won us the 20th.
Van der Gouw - Reliable no.2 for the main. Never complained and when called on did his job. Won quite a lot

then a big gap

Blind - really likeable, good tactical mind with excellent reading of the game and technique. It was a shame he left.

then another big gap

Cruyff

after that, all useless at Utd. Chong(and Tim to a lesser extent) still has a chance to rise at least above Jordi and possibly Blind

Van der Beek I’m predicting will be top five by the time he leaves

1- Van der Sar - wish we signed him straight away after Pete. Mr.Consistent and Reliable
2- Ruud - goalscoring machine. shame the timing wasn't right as we were in a transitional period
3- Stam- 3 seasons, 3 PL tittles. Would have won 5 straight PL and maybe even more had he stayed
4- RVP- no.20. shame moyes and van gaal ruined him

and then a huge drop off.
5. Blind - an underrated player.
6. Rai van der Gouw - an okay number 2
7. Jordi - actually he always pop up with a goal or two here and there while not playing much in the late 90's
8. Memphis -was super excited when we signed him as i thought he was europe's most talented youngster at that time.
9. Buttner
10. Fosu mensah
11. Chong

excluding Muhren because never saw him play.

Tough with some of those players, not suitable for Total Football imo.

Also, no good right wingers, think we should use 1 or 2 AM(s) system, or false RW system with Depay.

VdS
TFM -- Stam -- Blind -- Buttner
Cruyff -- VdB
Depay
RvP -- RvN -- Chong

Subs: VdG, Muhren(LM)

Arnold Mühren was brilliant at Iswich, a key player in Bobby Robsons sensational team. He was an important player for Netherlands when they struggled in the 80s, and good enough to make the team in 88 in spite of being a grandfather figure to many of one of the two most talented Dutch generations ever. He was very good for United even if not at his best.

VdSar
FosuMensa Stam Blind Chong
Cruyff VdBeek Mühren Depay
VNistelrooy VPersie

Subs:VdGouw, Büttner

Van Nistelrooy is my favorite, can’t choose between Stam and Van der Sar, Van Persie a tasty fourth. Mühren, then Blind. If Van de Beek, Chong or FosuMenza can overcome the latter two, it will be good. Van der Gouw was a very useful servant to the club. A shame with Cruyff and Depay, and Buttner had a lucky ride.

Van der Sar: Outstanding goalkeeper. Should have tried to get him when Schmeichel left for Sporting. That he played four seasons at Fulham is almost beyond belief.

Rudd van Nistelrooy: Tremendous striker. Key to our 2003 title win which was a particularly sweet one. And he used to pi55 off Wenger and Arsenal which was a bonus.

Robin van Persie: Gave the team what they needed so that Sir Alex left as a title winner. Lost his mojo after the great man retired. Things may have been different had SAF stayed as I think he was looking at a different style of play with more Kagawa and less (if any) Rooney.

Jaap Stam: Rock at the heart of the Treble defence. He and Ronny Johnsen were as natural a partnership as Bruce/Pallister and Ferdinand/Vidic. Inexplicably sold in the summer of 2001. I remember the press conference with him sitting in that ill-fitting Lazio shirt looking sad and bewildered. Deserved better. SAF admitted it was a mistake to sell him. He had years left in him.

Daley Blind: Versatile, intelligent adaptable and underused.

Honorable mention for Raimond van der Gouw.

Muhren was ok.
