Aye, what Cina linked is a good option that will last long enough.

A bit more?

Absolute monster of a laptop, not exactly "portable" though.

 yeah once I started looking I got all greedy!

Don't mind it not being portable, it's only going to be used in the house, but I didn't want a desktop.

I was looking at i5 and i7 processors, but the i7 I chose was £25 cheaper than an i5 one I was looking at.

It should still be okay though??

The i5 would've been better for most intensive applications, because whilst it's only dual cores (if it's the one I think you mean), those two cores are more powerful. The i7 has four cores but each core is less powerful, so it's not as good for some games but better for multi tasking.

For an extra £23 would it make any noticeable difference?

For example could I play BF3 (or other big games) with no problems the way it is now or should I change to the i5 processor?

I'll be playing some games on it, and general Internet usage so that shouldn't be much of a strain.

I think I can still edit my order so if you think the i5 is the better option I will probably put it in instead.

I can't afford to go with one of the other i7's either. Well I can but I have to draw the line somewhere.

So my laptop suddenly burst into flames and now I need a new one. I have no idea about computers, but I would love a laptop who is able to take on the graphics-heavy games. Could anyone help me put together a amazing laptop without going overboard on the price?

That one I got is pretty good for games etc. Although if you wanted to put a better i7 processor in it it would run you between £100 and £200 extra.

Failing that if you want to play games I would go for a desktop for the really intensive ones, as it would be a lot cheaper.

I know piss all about these things so hopefully cina shows up.

Get the Lenovo Y580, got it about a month or so ago, very good for graphics intensive games and hasn't given any type of problem so far. I seriously recommend it.

Celeron is pretty shite. It will run FM though but might not be great performance.

After a year it will deteriorate badly.

It is very cheap, so probably is worth it. But I would look to pay double that if it meant getting a much better machine that will also last far longer.

I'll give it a miss then, cheers Randall. My current laptop runs FM but not particularly well and the battery is fecked, looking for something to last for a good 3-4 years.

It looks good but I really do recommend getting yourself an SSD Burrow, even a 32/64gb to install the OS on, honestly they just make everything so much better, and you'll really get the most out of a rig like that with one.

I realise this is the laptop-thread and that is not a laptop :p still, any good for a computer who'll cost me about £800?

Happened to me too mate!

Tells you something good and in your hour of need clears off and leaves you hanging.

Try PC specialist, I got my laptop there, specs are at the top of this page for just under £900, so I'm sure you could get a really good desktop for about £800.

Not particularly. You could build your own equivalent for around £600 I reckon.

Including a monitor, speakers, mouse, keyboard and shipping/any other import-fees? And could you explain a tiny bit more where to add the SSD, seing the harddrive I already posted is SSD? I would link you to the site i'm using, but it's all in Norwegian.

If I'm reading that properly its a 1tb SSD drive?

If that's the case I would get a smaller SSD, say something like 240gb to run the operating system off and save some games to, but nothing major. Maybe even a smaller SSD, 120gb, and get a second hard drive at either 750gb or 1tb.

SSD drives are expensive so I imagine that it would save you some money and not affect performance.

Looks like I was wrong. When selecting HDs, the headline said "SSD harddrives" but I reckon the one I posted was one of the few who isnt SSD. So I should go with someting like 120GB SSD, and then 1TB regular in addition to the SSD?

Yeah if it were me I would get the same as I got in my laptop. 120 SSD and 500gb regular.

If need any additional storage I will use external drives, as that's where I store all of my media anyway.

The SSD drive means my laptop is on and ready to do whatever within 45 seconds, including putting in my password. And everything on windows runs so quickly and smooth.

To be fair I didn't need half the shit I put in it. My laptop uses about 3% of its CPU power and 25% of the ram when doing Spoitify and being online etc. It goes up to about 20% and 50% when playing games.

Edit: it's good that I know that it will still be pretty good in a few years though, and I got all the extra stuff to future proof it somewhat.

oh ok, monitor and stuff too isn't too bad.

I figured that was a standard HD as it's 1TB, that is way over the top for an SSD. Just buy a 128/256gb SSD to install your OS, some apps/games, and use the leftover to buy a 2tb HD for storage of movies, TV shows etc.

I know very little when it comes to a good machine..

Looking for something fairly powerful, enough to comfortably run photoshop with very large images with lots of layers ect.

I'll mainly be using for design work so a nice display would be preferable!

As far under £500 as possible! Cheers nerds!

Edit: and enough to handle some video editing!

I don't know a lot about photoshop and video editing but I know that you need a substantial amount of ram for editing things.

A friend of mine makes music etc on his laptop and said that sometimes his ram is running at almost 100%, he has either 8 or 16gb.

So I assume you will need 8 at the very least and sounds like you want a full hd monitor, and since you'll be photoshopping probably something reasonably large?

I think your budget is probably too low to be honest.

What Mr. Locke said, £500 is a bit low for a laptop like that.

Maybe check out some Asus laptops, the specs are usually pretty good with lower prices than most computers. Pretty reliable computers as well. However, just to warn you, the design of the computers themselves isn't great with Asus (not that you'd probably care thought).

Oh and if you're going to use photoshop and video editing, you'll probably need a good video card as well as decent RAM.
