They usually plan the subs as to who's required for the first team squad, etc. Players aren't generally taken off for poor performances like the first team.
I'd take Brown on the bench over Gill, personally. If Evans is fit for the weekend I'd imagine he'd start on the bench. So full back cover would be more needed.
