Sir Matt’s plaque removed from OT Directors’ box seat | @decorativeed 1-0 MEN

Read this in The Sun this morning, but didn't post it here because, well, it's The Sun. They were the only ones running with it at the time. Looks like it wasn't bollocks though, shame.

I'd like to know how many of these journalists reporting this as if we've shat on his grave knew about this plaque's existence before the removal.

Given that we have a statue of the man outside the stadium, and the stadium itself is on a road named after him, a small plaque that has likely been moved somewhere else rather than just chucked in the nearest bin is hardly a significant memorial to him. It appears that the grandchildren have been given season tickets in lieu of this, which seems fair enough.

At the end of the day, it would have been for Sir Matt and his wife to remain properly connected to those within the club, and have a place to bring their children to watch matches. There really isn't any need for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to be in the Director's Lounge.

The original story is from The Sun therefore i would wait if that all is really true.

Yeah saw that earlier and wanted to wait until some more respectable source reports it. MEN seems good enough, they didn't quote The Sun and had direct quotes from Sit Matt's family. Although the quote about the plaque comes from "another source".

Hope it's just about United re-locating it or something. I agree, and the Busby family seem extremely grateful and don't complain, about that they shouldn't have a free box at OT forever. As someone said, a few decades and there'd be hundreds of 'em. Well not really.

It would be a disgrace if this is true. There are some things that in my opinion should always remain sacrosanct and this is one of those.

The removal of the plaque is in poor taste and baffling (perhaps it'll be relocated) but the removal of the free box for the descendents is acceptable in my opinion.

Not only should the plaque (obviously) not be removed, but the family should have as many tickets as they want for as long as they want.

The term 'plaque' is not really accurate. In the director's box there are a number of seats with small name plaques on the underside. Since the leather seating went in there they had names on those seats. Some say 'Sir Alex Ferguson', 'Sir Bobby Charlton', others say 'Edwards Family', others said 'Busby Family'. The seats themselves can't be more than 10 years old, and the name plaque certainly hasn't been there for 50.

Sadly, last year both of Sir Matt's children died, but before then they could give those allocated seats out to family members if they were not going themselves. Now that they've died, and the grandchildren outnumber the amount of seats in the director's box and there's nobody to allocate them fairly, so United have given the family a number of season tickets instead, as they say in the article. It's just crap sensationalist journalism from the MEN again.

Edit: Here's a photo of the kind of seat name plate this 'plaque' actually is that the article refers to (no idea who the bloke is, by the way):

Great explanation!

M.E.N should be blacklisted on the website after this one. Every single article from them is pure shit

Let the free loaders buy their own tickets.

Not really. The season tickets is a good touch.

Sounds logical and makes sense. Will be more critical towards the source the next time.

Touchè.

The idea of hereditary seats being passed from generation to generation goes against the ethos of the Republic of Mancunia. Yes, keep a seat for Sir Matt and his kids, but thats as far as it goes.

This post should be quoted in the OP to avoid hysteria.

Manchester United isn't a charity. The plaque and reservations should have been removed as soon as Sir Bubsy passed away.

Manchester United were generous enough to allow this to continue for so long and the grandchildren should be grateful for this.

The grandchildren not having access is fair.

Removing the plaque is probably bollocks.... unless its been confirmed.

Removing the plaque was stupid. Having said that, I can't understand why legend's relatives should be given the red carpet treatment.

The plaque is probably just the name on the seat.

Its not like they took something off the wall

Exactly. It's just to say who the seat is allocated to...

Similar to how fans that have had their season ticket for over 25 seasons get a name plaque on their seat.

Seems like this was just a storm in a tea cup, as per usual. Someone should tell the scandi supporter's club as there is a shit storm brewing in their comments section

Not sure if it's just me... but I don't really see the big deal.

This plaque is one of the less significant things related to Sir Matt at the club. We have a fecking statue of the great man at Old Trafford. The stadium is on a road named after him... this just doesn't seem significant at all. Who here even knew there was a seat with Sir Matt's name plaque on until now?

I sure didn't.

This seems like another sensationalist article to suggest that United are money-hungry and losing the "United Way"

And they are quoted to have said as much.

It was supposed to have been left empty after he died. Mark of respect etc.

City do this whenever anyone dies hence blue seats all over the shop.

Thanks @decorativeed for the explanation. Putting it on the Caf twitter account in hope that the newspapers set their story straight(probably won't happen).

I always thought removing plaque was a good thing (ask my dentist)!

The plaque should have been removed when Sir Matt passed away, but gutter trash press always like to make a story.

"Grandchildren of Sir Matt Busby have directors box seat allocation removed" doesn't sound nearly as sensationalist and click-bait-able as "Sir Matt's plaque removed from Old Trafford"

Media eh? Twats.

Im sure 'Sir Matt Busby Way' will be around even if we lose the "United Way".
