The Athletic: "Man Utd coaches trying Jadon Sancho as RWB"

Possibly worth it's own thread.

We spent years scouting and pursuing one of the most highly rated young attackers in Europe as a £70m+ solution to our longstanding RW problem. And are now reportedly trying to shift him to RWB after a few games. An extremely productive attacking player known for his ability to link play and play between the lines being stuck isolated out wide with more defensive duties as a wing-back, presumably in the hope that he'll just know how to defend when it comes up and be able to do vaguely attacking things when he gets the ball in any situation.

Oh and it would be partly be prompted by the fact that the 50m fullback we bought in an era of technical, offensive fullbacks isn't good technically or offensively.

When we talk about Solskjaer maybe having a legacy in terms of the squad he leaves behind, the complete lack of coherence in this mess should be noted.

In one off game it's not a bad idea but long term it shouldn't be a solution at all.

Hopefully it's the same source than for the fabled 433. :nervous:

Jesus H Christ.

So we've spent £120 MILLION on two right sided players, neither of whom can play wing-back. And now we decide to start playing with wing backs?

Just sack him already ffs.

What's the obsession with trying to shoehorn players into different positions? As clear a sign as ever that the coaching team have absolute no clue.

Maybe next we can try him in goal as he is good with his feet.

Paying £74m to play Jadon at RWB is different levels of dumb...

Compound that by having made the decision to do that with him, you then all go on holiday for a week when you could use that time to work with him.

If I was a player, I'd be so disgusted and disenchanted by the fact we have all been given time off.

The club is on its knees, as a fringe player not on international duty I have two weeks to step up and try and impress the coaches to show I can help the team, instead they piss off on holiday demonstrating yet again that no matter what fringe players do, they won't get a chance.

Oh dear what a car crash this is turning out to be. 50m on AWB, 70m on Sancho and we try and shoehorn them into the back 5.

Diabolical recruitment, if I were Sancho I'd be getting my legal team to look for any loopholes to the effect of breach of contract, gross negligence, etc.

We haven't improved a single player under Ole. Masons the same, Rashford has regressed, not giving the likes of Amad or Hannibal any pathway to the first team. And yet this coaching team think they're going to teach a specialist position to a player foreign to said position when they can't coach players made for their natural positions?

Shambles if true

So we take Bundesliga's most exciting attacking talent and play him as a wingback. Great plan. Really worth those £73M that.

Only a couple of years ago he was not fit for defensive duties at Dortmund, and now this role. Not sure it'll end well, but just demand more of the central defence that's already not up to the task. shitshow.

It is quite amusing, but actually if we are going to persist with this 3 at the back stuff we can't keep going on with AWB in that position. I think many of us knew he could never be a wing back.

Personally I would have thought Lingard would be a better offbeat attempt for this role but apparently Sancho's defensive work has been okay (relative to our other forwards admittedly)

Feet up at home.
So we've been after him for at least 2 years and now they have him they don't know what to do with him. That's after the fact that any decent coaching would have improved AWB by now as well.

This can't be true?

“Alright, Jadon, lad? I’m off to Norway on holiday. When I’m back, you’re playing wing-back against Watford. Don’t worry about learning the position or coaching sessions, I’ll send you a few YouTube clips of Thuram and Cafu to watch. See you next week. Fantastic.”

Maybe they should try retraining Ole Gunnar Soksjaer into a manager.

Sounds good. How about Rashford as left wing back and Maguire as a striker.

If they don't have confidence in AWB, why can't Dalot play that role? Or do they think Sancho is going to be a better defender? Hell we could have kept Dan James or Ethan Laird around.

If true, it's laughable.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next manager sees Shaw/Telles as the wide left player and Sancho as the wide right one, with Sancho higher up the pitch and a tucked in right-sided defender like Kyle Walker for City or Di Lorenzo was for Italy at the world cup.

fecking ridiculous

Ole and his mates are just an absolute bunch of fecking idiots. The sooner they go the better. Even Tony Pulis wouldn't be this bad

What annoys me the most in all of that is the word ‘coaches’. Not one idiot with a crackpot idea but a whole group of idiots.

Sure, Sancho would be more useful there than AWB in games where the opposition is sitting deep BUT I don’t want any more ideas from these so called coaches other than what to write in their resignation letter.

If he plays like Hudson Odoi did it, I don't see why there is an outrage here. I don't think this coaching staff is dumb enough to try to make Sancho defend like a RWB.

We should be able to play Shaw, Varane, and Maguire as a defensive 3. If its a defensive approach to having a 5 then Sancho isn't the player. If it's to have him chip in with defending when we are out of possession I don't see why not. I'd rather have him on the pitch when we are in possession than AWB.
