FA Women’s Championship results for 14 October
Aston Villa 0-0 Durham (Att: 185)
Manchester United 3-0 Charlton Athletic (Att: 2,439)
Crystal Palace 1-0 London Bees
Lewes 1-3 Tottenham Hotspur (Att: 714)
Millwall Lionesses 1-2 Leicester City WFC

We're still top on 13 points after 5 games. Spurs have won all their games, but have only played 4, so they're behind us on 12 points. Next week - we're the odd team out, we don't play, so by the time we play Leicester away on the 28th we could be in second place.

Incidentally, the BBC got the Lewes/Spurs result wrong on their website and have awarded the points to Lewes in their table :smirk:

Big win for Spurs today, so they go top of the table. Leicester drew & Lewes lost, so it's increasingly looking like a two-horse race.
  • Durham Women 2 Crystal Palace Ladies 0
  • Tottenham Ladies 8 Millwall Lionesses 0
  • Charlton Athletic Women 2 Sheffield United Women 0
  • Leicester City Women 1 Aston Villa Ladies 1
  • London Bees 3 Lewes Women 2

Not yet a two horse race, but the league is starting to spread out, mostly in a predictable way, but with a couple of quirks. We're 5 points behind Spurs now, but we've got a chance to do some catching up this week.

Spurs, what a brilliant start they have. Yet charlton may well catch up with either of us sson with a couple of wins.

But the game against Tottenham
Is going to be something of a blockbuster!

Impressive Att figure, all time highest or somewhere up there?
Nothing to celebrate about and be too proud rawkish style -- just that it's good for the game.

As theorized by many, having United finally join in this would help develop women's football further -- attracting more people is a good start and one of the early signs, other than the other aspects we already knew. Let's see what happens next.

The top table is still not secure. United have a game in hand to potentially lead, Spurs is still strong, Charlton and Durham are at their toes hanging on threatening to lead if the top two start to slip up. Few of the rest may catch up mathematically.

It's great to see the women flying.

How many teams get promoted ? Or is it just the one.

They want to make WSL1 a 12 team League next year. So the plan is for one team to be relegated from WSL1 and the top two from the Championship to go up. However, there's a proviso - a promoted club must meet the WSL1 licence criteria (basically that they can afford to run a fulltime first team setup and run a youth academy).

If one of the top two can't meet the licence criteria, the third placed team can get promoted instead. The cynics say this is the, "what if United only come third?" emergency clause :smirk:

United go top, and Durham lose for the first time.

Aston Villa 1-3 London Bees
Durham 0-2 Leicester City WFC
Manchester United 8-0 Millwall Lionesses
Sheffield United 3-2 Lewes
Charlton Athletic 2-1 Crystal Palace

I've not been able to find United's attendance for today - from where I sat, it looked same as normal so somewhere around the 2000 mark.

Just for completeness, as it's quite interesting to look at the attendance numbers.

Championship
Tottenham Hotspur 1-6 Durham
Crystal Palace 1-3 Aston Villa (Att: 242)
Leicester City WFC 0-4 Charlton Athletic (Att: 240)
Lewes 0-2 Manchester United (Att: 1,958)
Millwall Lionesses 1-1 Sheffield United

WSL1
Everton 2-1 Liverpool (Att: 258)
Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal (Att: 2,149)
Birmingham City 2-1 Yeovil Town (Att: 662)
Brighton & Hove Albion 0-1 West Ham United (Att: 376)
Chelsea 1-0 Reading (Att: 1,741)

So, Lewes didn't quite have the biggest crowd of the day - that was City for their top of the (WSL1) table match - but it was a very big crowd for Lewes. Incidentally, Brighton are their much bigger next door neighbours, so it will win them a few local bragging rights, despite the defeat.

The most striking figure though is that crowd of 258 for the scouse derby. Admittedly, it's hard for them to build a fanbase because neither team play in Liverpool and they aren't close to winning anything. Even so, it shows how tough it can be, even for established clubs. Today's match was in Southport, that's about 16 miles from Goodison Park, but Leigh (where we play) is about 15 miles from Old Trafford so it's not a great excuse.

Our WSLCup match with Everton is on Thursday 13th December - a 7pm kickoff. That's scheduled for Southport as well. It'll be interesting to see how many show up :D

Makes that draw against Durham and goal conceded against Tottenham really grate on the eyes. That table is looking mighty fine.

That goal difference is just crazy! Considering they've played so little together.

It's nice to see City's women getting the same support as the men.

So with our match today abandoned, we've lost our top spot again, though we do have a game in hand over Spurs who won 3-0 today against Lewes. Spurs maintain their record of having no drawn games this season.

Spurs P12 Pts30
United P11 Pts28
Charlton P12 Pts26
Durham P13 Pts26

We don't play again until February.

When Spurs lost 1-6 to Durham, I didn’t think they’d pose too big of a threat. But they have been incredibly consistent apart from that game.

So, it's a quirk of our season that we've not played as many games as other teams. Our match with Leicester was postponed (after the helicopter crash) and Charlton was abandoned (due to the medics running of emergency oxygen). We sat this week out as scheduled, we were the odd team out in an 11 team league, and all our rivals won. Net effect: we're in fourth and we need to win our games in hand to get back up.

Today's results:

And the table is:
