But Giggs would have been through on goal if he had just past it back to him. Of course there was time, he took one rather large touch to get it out of his feet, solely with the intention of shooting as he always wanted to score a goal like that. Go watch it again, he just needs to slip it through the defendersReally? The quicker we had a shot the more likely Hart wasn't going to be back in time. He might've been able to get a lower arcing shot off but I doubt there was enough time to think about that.
Jordi Cruyff scored at OT in the last day of the 96/97 season, vs West Ham, but it was a rebound from a Scholes shot that hit the bar and I’m sure it crossed the line but was given to Cruyff. Scholes’ shot was one of the fiercest I’ve seen to this dayPaul Ince had one Vs. Newcastle at OT in 1994/95 I think. We won 2-0, Pallister and Gillespie got the goals.
Ince absolutely thumped one against the bar, it near enough went for a throw in after it hit the bar, so hard it was hit.
It just looked so aesthetically pleasing.
Why didn't Giggs shoot in the first place though? He had all the space and time in the world, as well as an empty net. That was pure greed, Rooney constantly has been trying to score from the half way line. I remember being so pissed at him not just slipping the ball through back to Giggs
Nah. I remember being pissed at Giggs for not having the balls to shoot when he had it. It was a much harder shot when he finally gave it to Rooney but still worth trying. That was pure greed, Rooney constantly has been trying to score from the half way line. Pele also had a shot from the half-way line against Czechoslovakia earlier in the tournament that dipped by the top corner by inches. The innovation required to pull these off - at the World Cup no less, when nobody had done anything like that before - probably doesn't get talked about enough.I love Pele's outrageous dummy round the keeper in the 70 World Cup. Probably the most extreme dummy ever seen in a match. To do it all at full pace and only have a fraction of a second to see the defender was going to cover the near post, and then pull it across to the far post was genius. You have to remember that was football from 49 years ago. A World Cup that moved football on in leaps and bounds from anything gone before.
It's usually included in video highlights of the 70 WC. As you said, nobody tried that back then, and some of the football in 70 looked decades ahead of 66. The England team of 70 was far better than the one that won the WC.Pele also had a shot from the half-way line against Czechoslovakia earlier in the tournament that dipped by the top corner by inches. This one always springs to mind. A moment of genius and then total feck up.This would have been an iconic goal, instead it's an iconic miss.
Doesn't count because it never crossed the line. The photos prove it
No goal.
Joe Hart saving this still annoys me. And we won the fecking game.I'll add this long distance one from Rooney:
It was Solskjaer that nodded that one in - Cruyff scored a left footed Volley in the 2nd halfJordi Cruyff scored at OT in the last day of the 96/97 season, vs West Ham, but it was a rebound from a Scholes shot that hit the bar and I’m sure it crossed the line but was given to Cruyff. Quite right, beg your pardonIt was Solskjaer that nodded that one in - Cruyff scored a left footed Volley in the 2nd half
Great readUtd vs QPR 1983. I was in the Stretford Paddock.
QPR GK kicks the ball out to about 20 yards inside the Utd half (towards us, quite a big kick)
QPR had a guy called Simon Stainrod playing for them. He brings this down first touch before it had bounced & is closed down from in front & then inside. He nutmegs both these Utd players & is now half turned about 40-45 yards out & not that far from the sideline, whereupon he tries for the far corner bending it from out to in with his right foot.
His superb control had brought forth some grudging appreciation but we were now laughing at the shot which had started out heading for the gap between the SE stand & the start of the original cantilever Utd Road stand thing. Then the ball started to drift back. Gary Bailey had been not bothering to move, he then had another look & decided still not to bother because he was already done. I think some of us thought it was in & there was the noise of breath being taken away all round the ground basically. Certainly where we were, because we had such a great view.
It must have cleared the bar by less than a foot & landed / bounced on the roof of the net just above the 'postage stamp' bit of the goal. Incredible attempt.
A lot of us then applauded, which was nice, & hardly the done thing in those days either.
That is why it is a near miss. It is not a goal.Doesn't count because it never crossed the line. The photos prove it
Remember standing behind the goal for that game and couldn't how that was disallowed![/QUOTE]
