Have yet to win a game all season and currently 2-0 down at home to Clermont Foot at half time who pre kick off were the only team below them in the table.

If this result holds Lyon will be bottom with 3 points from the first 9 games.

In the 2000s they totally dominated the French division in the manner PSG have done for the last decade. Also regulars making quarters and one SF of CL in 2010.

I assume it's the usual of bad change of ownership after Aulas sold up but they've always had a very strong youth academy so assume that's also dried up in recent times.

Their side tonight has Antony Lopes, Lovren, Lacazette all starting (Tagliafico and Tolisso are also around) so there is still experience at the club and talented young players like Cherki so they shouldn't be 3 points from first 9 games bad surely?

Interested as ever for more insight from the french based posters on here as it will be a very big relegation indeed. Not sure Fabio Grosso is a great pick for a salvage job, think they actually approached Graham Potter in August which would've been an interesting pick.

Haven't checked the Dutch table, Ajax aren't doing that bad relative to Lyon....surely.

Guess Peter Bosz is a bit of a silent grim reaper laying the foundations for these euro giants to get relegated eventually.

It’s 9 games in so not impending but yes, remember them dominating very well as it was recent enough. Even in the last few years they had a good side who went far in various European competitions. Europa semi finalists in 2017 and Champions League in 2020.

I’m sure they’ll be fine. Lacazette scored 27 goals last season — surely their team is too good to go down at the moment?

Oh no....Anyway.

It seems like they've struggled to sign anyone close to the level of players they used to have. I think the talents still come through, but they don't have any sort of role models or a good team to break into. Cherki looks to have suffered from having no one to really push him on or top professionals to guide him.

Might be due to ownership and money issues from COVID and the tv rights debacle, but it's felt like they've also let people run down their contracts and scrimped wherever they can.

They are currently 6 points off Lens who are in 15th. They'll improve once they go out of CL.

Think it's two down and then third bottom goes into relegation play off so think that is Lyon's best hope this season.

Thread title very clickbaity, thought they had a 20-point deduction or something to say impending relegation. While it's a historically bad start for them, as you said they have good players so will probably rebound to mid-table at some point. Lacazette scored 27 last season so you'd fancy him to get near 20 again which other teams around them probably don't have.

Monaco look liked they might go down a couple of seasons ago and they're top now. Level is quite flat these days, outside of PSG any team can go down.

Seems like it was just yesterday that they were winning Ligue 1's in their sleep and churning out top level talents for big profit.

I remember them under Aulas. They won 7 titles in a row back then. We played them at least once in Europe too.

I think this is great for football. If you are managed bad off the pitch and suck on it, your history/size shouldn't save you from flirting with relegation, or actually going under.

Ominous reading for a United fan...

70.37% win rate for Pierre Sage! Possible ETH replacement? (Joking... pretty impressive turnaround though!)

Outrageous behaviour from Lyon owners. Knee-jerk sacking of Grosso who is a great manager evidenced by the glorious win of Serie B with Frosione. Not giving him the players he wanted and not giving him 3 years and big budget to realise his vision. They could have just written off this season.

What use are the improved performances and the results and the European qualification if you now look like a sacking club?!

A manager must also have his full squad available to him all season and be working under a perfect structure before any judgement can be passed. Until then he’s not accountable for anything.

Lyon and their owners are knee jerk who have missed the next Fergie by sacking Grosso.

Sage, with his 70% win rate, can't be as good as Fergie now. You need to have a bad start and you need a certain portion of the fans (or maybe just one, with a banner) to ask for you to be sacked to unlock that trait. Maybe if he has a disaster of a second season then he can still fall into the potential next Fergie bracket.
