The RedCafe Boxing Thread

I don’t rate Eubank. I don’t think he punches particularly hard, he doesn’t throw a lot of punches or fight at a pace and tends to switch off during periods of a fight; however, I don’t really know what to expect from Benn - sometimes I think he looks decent, and sometimes ordinary.

It’s insane to be 1/20th of a pound over but over is over I guess. Think there’s a rehydration clause too that they can’t be over 12 1 (i think) tomorrow morning. But yeah, he’s gotta be drained as hell after cutting that.

Might even turn the fight if he can’t rehydrate in time. Put him under duress for 5 rounds and he’ll be blowing chunks.

Mental. He’s surely absolutely drained from trying to make the weight.

You could see it in his face at the press conference he looked agitated. When he mentioned the segment about being in pain, I don't think he was joking.

I understand where his father is coming from, most fighters lose pounds and compete under their natural walk around weight category. Weight draining with an added rehydration clause on the other hand, is entirely different altogether.

I don't understand how he couldn't find 25g to lose. From the water cut videos he's put out, assuming that's the worst of it for dramatic effect I've seen fighters in far more worrying conditions before hopping on the scale, so I doubt he's that dead at the weight.

It’s just cost him almost half a mill; I don’t think it’s a bluff. If he’s dry, he’s dry.

What even happens if he’s over in the morning? It’s not just liquid he has to get back in his body. Without electrolyte balance, he may as well not even bother getting in the ring!

Maybe but if he thinks he can get a big psychological edge for what amounts to probably less than 5% of his purse would he consider that a price worth paying? I honestly wouldn't put it past him.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens with the rehydration tomorrow morning. I'd imagine the penalties will be more severe for missing that check weight (and be per 1lb) as that's the one that really matters.

:lol:People really do see conspiracy theories in everything.
The brain surgeon that worked with Michael Watson has called for the fight to be cancelled cos the rehydration clause is so dangerous.

Interesting it looks like the fight is doing poorly commercially, also how controlling the sport is about its image now.
The optics look petty when one of the world’s most visited and respected fight websites, Boxing Scene, has been denied accreditation for the past four major events to which it has submitted applications, including this week in Tottenham. Some highly credible writers and editors are being shut out of boxing.

 Probably a bit farfetched but if there's anyone that would do that it's him. He's already slapped Conor at the press conference knowing he'd get a hefty fine in a move we know was completely premeditated, already paid out some money to fighters in a move purely designed to stir the pot with Matchroom.

It's a strange one simply because there is for me no issue with him making the weight. He's done it his last 4 fights including 6 months ago, if he was several lbs over than fair enough but he's missed by literally grams and didn't look that drained to be honest.

That said having seen a clip of the behind the scenes and his trainer Johnathan Banks talking in an interview it seems like the calibration was off between their scales and the official ones. Which was almost the most simple explanation but a pretty schoolboy feck up either from Team Eubank or the British Boxing Board of Control depending on who's at fault.

Fighters have been cutting weight like this forever. It's nothing new. Why is there such a big deal about it now? Look at Conor Mcgregor when he used to get down to 145. He looked like a skeleton.

It’s the rehydration clauses in the contract that’s the fecked up thing he wasn’t able to properly rehydrate until 8 am this morning his body is fecked. He’s already lost this fight and he knows it

He's lost 500k in cash and will be at a massive disadvantage tonight Benn and his team will be ecstatic.

To be fair this is when IV's were still allowed which made rehydrating far easier.

But yeah, it's nothing new (unfortunately, would love to see it outlawed but I've no idea how you go about doing that safety) - the casual fans are really lapping and then regurgitating Eubank Jr's narrative in the build up to this fight, he's done a brilliant job in the media.

They have certain rehydration clause in some title fights. The ibf I think, so again it's nothing new.

They really are. It's all over social media. I mean every fighter does this. Expect for the heavyweights obviously.

I think some of these people online would literally call the police if they saw the weight cuts Kelly Brook or Ricky Hatton used to put themselves through. Not to mention MMA fighters.

The rehydration clause is the bigger deal but he seems to have made that comfortably this morning with half a pound to spare.

I saw Eubank Jr say that he doesn't have any specialists on weight cutting around. I think that is stubborn. Could have had a much easier cut I imagine.

I hope Eubank wins tonight, if nothing else because he's the more likeable of the two. I worry Benn might just be a bit too sharp but it will depend what pop he has in his shots at the weight.

For all the sneering about casual fans, a lot of veteran boxing writers are talking about it, not as a way to build up the fight, but to highlight what a circus and risible spectacle it is.

Yeah that's fair to be honest - none of the pros have highlighted that the 10lb rehydration is standard practice in the sport with 1 of the 4 recognised, legitimised governing bodies.

Wasn't meant to be a sneer at the casuals btw, more just highlighting that obviously if you aren't following the sport day in day out you obviously aren't going to have the depth of knowledge about rules and regulations (just like I wouldn't about rugby union for example as I don't follow club rugby) and will be more inclined to believe a spun narrative, totally natural and Eubank Jr understands there and has played on that massively to his advantage.

Fair enough and I am very much a casual fan tbh.
Everything I've read has been negative about the fight rather than buying into the hype (EDIT: The Independent is totally).
The promoters barring certain journos is Trumpesque as well.
No way I'm staying up to c5am here for this.

Imagine when there used to be 15 rounders with weigh ins on the day of the fight.

Eubank has dropped a bollock here - he should have got there earlier; particularly weird when he allegedly asked for an earlier weigh in.

They’re arguing over the gloves now as Eubank’s team don’t want horse hair.

What advantage? If he goes in there looking flat and exhausted, will you be saying the same thing?

Benn needs to up the pace and get after him; I’m not sure he’ll be able to handle it because of the rehydration issue.

He has definitely cultivated his image on social media and to the press TBF

Obviously he would far rather not lose 375k and be able to hydrate properly but he has made the best out of the situation reputationally.

Yeah but to what advantage? This could be a very embarrassing and costly episode for him, and his family name is the driver in this fight.

He loses this and the casual fan tuning in because of their name couldn’t care less for the “excuses”. That same social media presence can also be a cross to bear if he’s brought eyes to the fight then gotten folded.

I feel if he loses this, no amount of remonstration can bail him out.

To the advantage of improved public opinion.

Also the British public loves a loser. If he loses the fight then it won't effect his future career as a professional celebrity.

It will be embarrassing but that's always the case when fights get personal.

This fight is bigger than the both of them. I think he’d rather die than lose, as cliche as that sounds. I don’t think swaying the public matters much when picking up the mantle on a feud he’s known since he was a child himself. Lots of weight on his shoulders, excusing the pun.

Whoever loses is going to have a hard time picking themselves up from this, imo.

We are sort of edging away from the point. He has clearly set out to win the public relations battle. We can disagree on how devastating a loss will be for them afterwards but he's definitely won that side of things in the build up.

The sympathy from yesterday online was another example of that. Again he would still have rather be hydrated and not lose the money but he made the most of the hand he was dealt.

Little bit of a coming out party for Riley here. Very slick

The judges had that took close to me Vidal Riley was up 7 rounds to me. Was a clear win for Riley. 1 judge had it 115/113 to Vidal no chance it was that close.

Looks like senior has tuned up. I can't see Benn having the power to trouble Eubank. Surely he won't have the knock out power moving up two weight classes. Khan tried it against Canelo, and so did Brook against triple G, they both ended badly.

I had a feeling Senior would rock up. The way Eubank Jr built it up that his dad thinks he’s a disgrace etc set it all up nicely.
