What does that „+/-„ mean at the end of the stats sheet? Funny that he‘s a superstar from the get go, must be rookie of the year too with playing 38mins at the All Star game, impressive.
It's the point differential when he was on the court. So basically the West outscored the East by 16 points when he was playing.

1996/1997 Playoffs are here! I won't make too much of them this time, since you're all just 1- or 2-year rookies. Let me know if you guys want me to use the spoiler tag more for these sorts of things. I may do that more later, when we hopefully get more of you in the later rounds. Fingers crossed!

Eastern Conference:

@Salt Bailly and the #8 Milwaukee Bucks (39-43) were up against the #1 Orlando Magic (64-18) in the first round. His team got swept 0-3, but he did start in all three games,

@oneniltothearsenal and the #6 Charlotte Hornets (42-40) upset the #3 Detroit Pistons (52-26) 3-1 to make it to the Eastern Conference Semis, but were unable to beat #2 Washington Wizards (62-20). Still, beating the 3-seed and taking a game off the 2-seed is not a bad second year rookie performance. He averaged

@altodevil and the #5 Cleveland Cavaliers (43-39) were up against @Dan and the #4 Philadelphia 76ers (44-38). In the end Dan came out on top 3-1. In the Conference Semis Dan's team met the reigning champions Orlando Magic (64-18), which proved too great a challenge.

Western Conference

@hobbers and the #8 Portland Trailblazers (38-44) faced a tough challenge in the #1 Minnesota Timberwolves (59-23), getting swept in the process.

Playoff averages: points/rebounds/assists (rounded)
  • Salt Bailly: 8/6/1
  • oneniltothearsenal: 5/6/3
  • altodevil: 6/27/1 (also 6 steals and 9 blocks, and 44 minutes)
  • Dan: 9/5/2
  • hobbers: 10/4/3
Full bracket:

I'll come back later with end-of-season awards and a summary of how each player did this season.

If so I can’t wait to be introduced in a season or two and when I am….

It’s hammer time.

no-one in particular
I think I'm going to speed it up slightly, putting 3 in each draft instead of 2.
I didn‘t want to ask but I think it‘s a great idea. Why don‘t you have a baller btw?

Solo millennial player… still being built. Ironing out the cracks. Hoping to come in and nail down a spot somewhere right away.

Oh it works. Now that we know how altodevil's very stupid build breaks the game, I'll be curious to see how your very stupid build breaks the game.

I did the last time too, in writing (because I thought of it a bit late so the season had already started and I didn't want to show the stats). I'll do it for the preview of the next season, when I show your stat changes.

He has a usage rate of 5.3% (by far the lowest of any player with more than 10 games), and he shoots like 3 times per game. He's a very discerning player, I guess.

1997 NBA Draft

We've got another draft with three Cafites in it: @Solius, @The Cat and @Stobzilla. Two Centers and a Point Guard. Also in the draft are Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady, so we'll see how that affects them.

With the 4th pick, the Vancouver Grizzlies (26-56) pick:

@Stobzilla!

They already have a few Centers, but they're uniformly awful, so Stobzilla should be getting some playing time. Stobzilla did get a tiny bit worse immediately (maybe through osmosis from his teammates), but he's still got high potential (and he actually improved in Basketball IQ). He's a 3-Point specialist (3), a Post scorer (Po), a Passer (Ps) and a Rebounder (R). Lots of useful skills.

With the 3rd pick via the Chicago Bulls, the downright terrible Seattle Supersonics (20-62) select:

@The Cat!

Seattle's Centers are even worse than Vancouver's, so The Cat will probably play a lot too. Like Stobzilla, The Cat declined slightly, but he also has high potential still. He's only got the 3-Point trait, which we'll see how plays out in an era when the 3 point shooting Center wasn't really a thing yet.

With the 2nd pick, the now-slightly-better Seattle Supersonics select:

@Solius!

Yes, that means we've now got two Cafites on the same team. I honestly didn't expect it to happen like this. Solius joins a team where the only good player is a PG, but he just might be good enough that he'll play anyway in a different role. Unlike the other two, Solius actually improved a bit, across the board. He's also a 3 point shooter, as well as a Passer.

Other players:

#1 Tim Duncan to New Jersey Nets
#5 Tracy McGrady to Indiana Pacers
#6 Tim Thomas to Atlanta Hawks
#7 Chauncey Billups to Toronto Raptors
#8 Keith Van Horn to Miami Heat
#9 Ron Mercer to Minnesota Timberwolves
#10 Derek Anderson to Sacramento Kings

97/98 Season Preview

(I'm going to do this without spoilers, let me know if it's a problem for those of you reading it on mobile)

We're starting to fill up the league with Cafites a bit! We still have a few to go (and as many more as want to sign up), but we're already in our first season with two on the same team. This is the last season of the rookie contracts of our initial four players, so a lot can happen between this season and next. I doubt anyone will get traded, given how cheap they are right now, but from next season on all bets are off on that score.

Let's start with the official NBA Power Rankings at the beginning of the season.

Unsurprisingly most are still on bad teams, which is how those teams managed to draft them in the first place. The only ones in the top half are Salt Bailly at the Bucks, and Dan at the 76ers. Dr. Dwayne as well as the super(?)-duo of Solius and The Cat are on truly bad teams. On the one hand that's bad for the "success" part of the equation, but it also means they have good chances at getting good draft picks again. Barring good trades, none of our players are likely to be on teams that will see much success. It's not too big a deal given that the oldest Cafites are still 20, which is younger than most of the next draft class.

Let's take a look at the players and their teams.

@Solius & @The Cat on the Seattle Supersonics

Not the worst team around, but close. Still, they have a very solid player in Gary Payton in addition to our younglings, as well as a lot of roster spots and salary cap space to fill. I'll try to pay attention to any moves they make. I wouldn't get my hopes up though, as it's very likely they're trying to be bad to get another high draft pick. The Cat seems to hate it there already, while Solius is just mildly unhappy. Both are in the starting lineup, though, so that's cool.

@Stobzilla on the Vancouver Grizzlies

An okay team, but not getting any better (except for a young Allen Iverson and hopefully the even younger Stobzilla himself). Stobzilla doesn't seem very happy to be there.

@altodevil on the Cleveland Cavaliers

altodevil continues to improve. Is there a difference between 0 inside scoring and 3 inside scoring? I guess we'll find out, as last season altodevil was happy to take only 3 or 4 shots per game. He made the playoffs doing it, but I wouldn't be so sure about this season. He's hitched to a rather old, declining bunch, with no salary space to work with.

@Dan and the Philadelphia 76ers

Dan also got better, by a fairly decent amount. He actually had a decent time in the playoffs last season, and considering his team also largely improved, he might just be able to hope for a repeat of that experience. The core of his team is relatively young, so it'll be interesting to see how the next few years pan out. If he stays that is; his contract expires after this season.

@Dr. Dwayne and the New York Knicks

The bad news is that Dr. Dwayne is on easily the worst team in the league, and a team which has precisely no salary cap to spare. The team is also declining. The good news is that Dr. Dwayne himself actually improved, particularly in the vital Basketball IQ stats. He's not in the starting lineup, but he'll probably play more and better than last season. His contract also expires, though if the Knicks really are as bad as they look he might just stay and find another talented friend after the next draft.

@hobbers and the Portland Trailblazers

hobbers took quite a leap this pre-season. He improved everywhere, and significantly so in some areas. His potential rating is a ludicrous 89, but if he gets anywhere near 80 he should be happy. Portland have a lot of flexibility in both salary and roster spots, so it's possible they'll try to make something happen. Either way hobbers has a couple of years left on his contract.

@oneniltothearsenal and the Charlotte Hornets

Like hobbers, oneniltothearsenal took a great leap his abilities between last season and this. He even improved his 3-point shooting by 6. To 6. He's not in the starting line-up, but that's because he somehow finds himself on a team where every single player over 51 rating is a Forward like himself. I expect he'll play quite a lot regardless, unless he's managed by a complete idiot. Which he might be. At least his contract expires after the season, so he can take his talents somewhere else if he needs to, thank you very much.

Finally we have @Salt Bailly and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Salt Bailly took a very slight step backwards in rating, though he increased in some vital skills so it's hard to gauge the actual effect of it. He's on a pretty young, decently good team, so I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to stay after his contract runs out this season. They're over the salary cap, but they could potentially make something happen through trades even so.
