Ahead of our visit to Stamford Bridge, and prior to Anfield, a lot has been made of Mourinho's record against the top 6 - particularly the away form. Lets have a look at the others:

16/17

Arsenal: 1 point; 4 goals scored; 11 conceded.
Chelsea: 4 points; 3 goals scored; 9 conceded.
Liverpool: 9 points; 9 goals scored; 7 conceded.
City: 4 points; 5 goals scored; 5 conceded.
United: 2 points; 1 goal scored; 8 conceded.
Spurs: 2 points; 4 goals; 8 conceded.

17/18

Arsenal: 1 draw and 1 loss.
Chelsea: 1 win.
Liverpool: 2 losses.
City: 1 win.
United: 1 draw.
Spurs: 1 loss.

Feel as if our record away to the top 6 has been overstated. Granted our performances weren't great, you wouldn't think anyone, bar Liverpool, would have been too impressed with their respective performances. Even they've been humbled in both their away games this season.

In slightly-more concise terms.

Arsenal: 2 points from 7 games.
Chelsea: 7 points from 6 games
Liverpool: 9 points from 7 games
City: 7 points from 6 games.
Spurs: 2 points from 6 games
United: 3 points from 6 games.

So as it stands, Arsenal have the worst record, followed by Spurs and then us.

Also doesn't factor in that we played Spurs and Arsenal away with second-string teams to save players for the Europa League final as 4th was already gone.

A win on Sunday and, all of sudden, it's a relatively decent record.

Let's bear in mind three of the away games for us last season happened at a stage where we gave up on the league. Were down to the barebones and started resting players for Europa.

As long as we at least try to attack, I don't mind. We don't need to go there and park the bus for the whole game. We have very good forwards who need service. I hope Mourinho picks a strong team which will be good at both attack and defend, and have match winners on the bench also..

‘Big games’ are overrated to me. If we get anything on Sunday, we would have gone through this period of ‘tough’ games and only managed a defeat against fecking Huddersfield. That loss is a reminder that all are as important as the other. To make up for that, we really need to try and beat Chelsea. If we’d have won that, we’d be 2 points behind City.

Same happened last season. Dropping points that we’ve already counted is what fecked us. We need to be approaching those games with the same attitude.

As you can tell, I’m still furious about the shambles at Huddersfield!

Not good company to be in. Arsenal are spineless bottlers and spurs a renowned for being shit away. Thats the company we keep in this table.

I'm bumping this as I've seen a few comments complaining about Mourinho's away record in the big games, this is an updated version (17/18):

Arsenal 1 draw and 2 losses. 1 point.
Chelsea 1 win and 2 draws. 5 points.
City 2 wins and 1 loss. 6 points.
Liverpool 1 draw and 2 losses. 1 point.
United 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses. 4 points.
Spurs 3 losses. 0 points.

Overall

City 5 wins and 1 loss. 15 points
Chelsea 2 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. 9 points
Liverpool 2 wins, 2 draw and 2 losses. 8 points
United 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. 7 points
Spurs 2 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. 7 points
Arsenal 1 win, 3 draws and 3 losses. 6 points

Going into the last third of the season, we've the most home games against the top 6 with the solitary away game against City in April.

This is not great but suddenly it's not looking as terrible as I thought.

As long as we play the correct formation/players in their right position with the addition of Sanchez our record should improve albeit we wont be the only ones who will improve over the next 18 months

Glad someone did this, I was pretty sure it wasn't as grim as people think.

It's never, ever, as grim as people think. Except when Moyes was here, then it was every bit as grim as people thought.
People on here just want to find a way to complain about something - this just isn't it. In fact, there isn't a lot to complain about overall but half of the cafe, if not more, will find the smallest mole hill and make it into a mountain. The last month, we won 5 and lost 1 yet you still feel more people complained after the Spurs loss than praised us after a great month. What I find even more humorous is the fact that we had people complaining after we beat Spurs late last year. :houllier:

City's record is phenomenal I must admit. The rest are close to each other in this regard.

Obviously the record isn't good, but a bigger problem is the actual performances. Away from home we basically just leak chances to the opposition, and have very little ourselves. Even our only away win to Arsenal was not actually a good performance after the first 10 mins. We got a 2-0 lead, and then proceeded to sit back, even though we are absolutely awful at sitting back, and gave away big chance after big chance... And that was to Arsenal who are woeful this year. And it's not like the other games were any better. Performances in every big game seems to be we just get battered but de Gea sometimes saves us. Spurs at home was just a bore draw with almost no chances for either side, but we grinded out a result with the random flick on. It's not like we outplayed them... It was a nothing game decided by a tiny moment.

Home against Arsenal last season was probably the only time we significantly outplayed the opposition AND created a lot of chances (which we still drew), the way Spurs did to us the other day. We defensively shut out chelsea last season, and were clinical, but it wasn't like we battered them or significantly outplayed them. We just did a solid all around job on them. We pretty much never have an all around convincing performance in any big game and that has to start changing when you see the players we have. Like even if we go a goal or 2 down, the second half of that spurs game was embarrassing. Say what you want about Arsenal but they responded to us once going 2 goals down and pretty much battered us without finishing their chances so they still lost. We lose a goal and just stop playing basically.

The stats you are showing for 17-18 are inaccurate because
1) Season isn't over yet, so all the teams have played different number of away matches, one team might have played more away matches then the other. It makes no sense to compare the stats if one team has played only 2 and other has played 4.

2) Number are inaccurate as well as Liverpool has played more than 2 away matches, not sure but my guess is 4 since we only have 2 away matches left.

My apologies, you have already presented the accurate stats. But I don't know how to delete the post , new to the forum.

This is the problem. Big games seldom produce the fantasy performances you want them to. Think back to the SAF years, how often did we blow away the top teams? We won a fair amount of them, but a lot of them were close, others not so much. We've an average amount of points from our rivals this season, if we can pick up 4-6 more, honestly, who cares about how we get them?

There's a difference in games basically being around 50/50 chance wise as you'd expect, but the thing is, our big game performance at home are at best that. Most of the time the opposition completely outplays us and we're fortunate to get out with a draw. Never do we actually outplay the opponent. And it happened plenty of times with Sir Alex that we were clearly the better team and had a clear system in those games to get the result. Sometimes it happened that we would play poorly and grind out a result or lose, sometimes they were even games, but we had our fair share of games where we were clearly the better side and put in convincing performances. Especially when we clearly had the better side. Even with Van Gaal we generally played well in the big games. With Mourinho, the big games have just been a mess and the results poor.

Take Arsenal out of this as they are a soft touch, especially for us and the figures look much worse against the top5

Some of the stats I’ve seen dont include Arsenal because they're not in the top 4.

Also, the away games to spurs and arsenal last year were dead rubbers for us.

The fact that some of these stats are for away games only dont include wins against Chelsea last year, beating Spurs this year etc. We dominated Arsenal last year as well. There are obviously improvements we can make, but even this year we’ve had Carrick, Fellaini and Pogba all out for the big games.

We had Pogba for the spurs game and he didn't make any difference.
Carrick was done a couple of years ago and as for Fellaini!!

We got the tactics wrong. We beat Spurs at our ground without Pogba. He did offer a lot against Arsenal though. On Carrick and Fellaini, it was more because it didnt give us an option to play 3 CMS with Pogba also out.
