Thiago Alc*ntara | Retires

Imagine if we signed him back in the Moyes Era. Feels like he's played 5 games since leaving Barca.

He's not though is he? He's always been a top, top player and his honours reflect that.

I disagree.

I think he's a good player but nothing more. Think some players get more highly rates when they are always injured and he fits that category for me.

Myth of a footballer. decent player but always hugely overrated.
Completely disagree. Behind Kroos he was the second best midfielder to play for Bayern in the last 20 years. And yes, I’m willing to die on that hill.

Been a poor signing for Liverpool really. 68 PL appearances in 4 years is it? Less than 100 in all competitions.

He’s 33 in two months and is struggling to get fit having played a grand total of 5 minutes this campaign. He’s been finished for a while now.

Between the 15/16 season and 19/20 he was never injured for more than a month, was a regular starter in an incredibly strong team (under Pep as well as other managers) and was a mainstay during their 19/20 Champions Leauge campaign which they won.

He's over the hill now and injured too much but in that 4-5 year period he was one of the best midfielders in the world.

Absolutely. He was our best midfielder in that period and no one else comes close.

No way he’s 33, in my head he’s a 26 year old that’s eventually gonna go back to Barca to replace Xavi

Then die you shall. He had some really high peaks, but overall, because of injuries and inconsistency, he wasn't the second best midfielder Bayern had.

Oh wow, I'd forgotten about this guy. I'd like to say I thought he'd left Liverpool, but in reality I'd just forgotten he exists.

The most impressive thing about his Liverpool career was his inbuilt cloaking device that enabled him to avoid red cards.

I think Liverpool’s title chances massively increase with a healthy Thiago.

He was hugely overrated because he makes those cute 5 yard passes. Always injured for most seasons and a benchwarmer most times until he had one good season 19/20 . There was never a 4-5yr period he was close to the best, he didnt even start for Spain. Adding a spin to a simple sideway pass doesnt add much to gameplay

I will rate Any Bayern midfielder over him. Kimmich Schweini Kroos Martinez, Vidal. He is closer to the worst Bayern midfielder than the best. In the 2020 season I will pick Gnabry Lewy Neuer Alaba Kimmich over him. Thiago was at par with Davies Goretzka in contribution to the team

I wouldn't go that far  I would add James as well though, he did well for one season when he played as a CM, I think Thiago was injured at that time.

Talk about opposite ends of opinion. The man divides opinion even amongst his own teams supporters

What a shitty hill to die on

Xabi, Scweinie, Ballack, Kimmich?
Xabi was already an old man when he arrived, so
I’m not really counting him. At his peak it’s a different story.
Schweinsteiger is in my opinion the most overrated player Bayern had during my time as a fan. He benefits hugely from having his very short peak at the moment of our biggest strength and his style being very popular with the fans. But he never had the skills to control a game like Xabi, Thiago or Kroos. They are all superior to him. Especially if we consider his career trajectory. He was wasted quite a while on the wings and once he actually settled into his role of a cm, injuries started to mount. If he wouldn’t fit this archetype of a typical German player, he’d be viewed differently, I think.
Ballack is in the same bracket as Lampard and Gerrard for me. Great attacking midfielders, but not playmakers.
Kimmich is the weakest one on the whole list. His career turned out somewhat underwhelming and he’s lacking form ever since Corona. He also hasn’t improved his playmaking at all for many years now and isn’t that good at retaining possession. His tactical discipline is also lacking. At least compared to the immense level of the others.
Kroos was the best, without a doubt. His sale was the worst decision I have ever seen our board make.
Thiago might have been at that level or even better, if it weren’t for his injuries. Nonetheless, his peak was immense and a sight to be behold. He was an incredibly complete cm, capable of playing anywhere in midfield at worldclass level. And except for aerial duels, he had no significant weakness at all. I think of all the players mentioned, he had the most talent and the greatest skillset. He wasn’t able to quite fulfill his potential. But he was an immense player for us.

I get that this doesn’t reasonable well around here, considering his move to Liverpool and how all that turned out. But with us he was everything I want in a midfielder.

How has he injured himself again after 10 minutes of football for the first time since April? There was a period in the 21/22 season where he was outstanding but for the most part he's been a huge disappointment.

Another Bundesliga flop alongside Keita (I know he played for Barcelona as well).

Where would you place Hargreaves out of interest.

One of the most talented midfielders of his generation. Alongside Pogba in my view. Has had a good career, but hasn't come close to fulfilling his potential. Similar to Pogba again really.

James‘ only season as a central midfielder for Bayern was better than any of Thiago’s seasons.

James is a fair weather footballer without any drive or defensive contribution. I was very excited when we signed him and thoroughly underwhelmed when he left. Not giving him a permanent deal was a great decision.
He was incredibly skilled and easy on the eye. But he never even bothered with defense, whereas Thiago actually excelled in this department.
