Coulda sworn I started a thread for this.

Anywho, out today:



Think this might be a sleeper hit, something that surprises a lot of people.
 
Going to see it Saturday with my son, before I get dragged around Liverpool Comic-Con for an afternoon on Sunday.
 
Definitely want to catch this on the big screen. Like the characters they are using and trailers look decent enough.

Marvel Team up movies are so much better than the stand-alone films where they concentrate on one character or another origin story. Tbh I was fully invested in the Infinity Stone saga, but since Endgame, other than a select few, the series and films have been wank. Too many of them going on in such a short space of time.
 
I saw it last night. I see it's getting very solid reviews, and my brother absolutely loved it... But I just don't see it. I felt it was very generic, run of the mill blockbuster (not so bad in that regard), with some odd pacing and little lulls, some good stuff and some less good.

My lad was too late after umming and ahhing so missed out on Hayden Christiansen and James McAvoy.

He plays the Star Wars games so he’s getting the bloke who played the main guy in the game to sign his Funko pop. Possibly another but decide on the day who he gets.

I've edited it now, I thought that as the film has been released, it wasn't an issue - it's also a pretty vague indication which out of context wouldn't mean much, I think? In any case, I found that whole theme pretty meh. I think it's a great thing for mainstream media to tackle, but I didn't find it handled with any particular finesse or novel insight, and felt very... lazy. Not terrible, just not very interesting.

That's less of a movie review and more of combination of grandpa gripes about needing new glasses and old man yells at the clouds. We get it most people have grown bored of the so called marvel universe and don't really keep up with it but no reason why you need to spend more time whining about that than actually critiquing the movie.
 
I liked Captain America Brave New World more tbh. Its still decent and I was still interested in what was happening for the majority of the movie, because I like Yelena's character

So firstly when it was announced people were saying it was Marvel doing their version of The Suicide Squad. Its been pretty funny because ever since the 2nd Suicide Squad movie and Peacemaker series I've seen plenty of posts in DC fandom complaining about Suicide Squad being overdone. And then here we seemingly had Marvel copying it. However when actually watching the movie the only moment where it felt like it could be a bit like the Suicide Squad movies was the beginning fight where Taskmaster is killed, some characters who had done some bad stuff in the past being featured and the end movie boss being the fault of the person in charge. So there were a few parts that were alike. But aside from the Taskmaster death it never had the same tone. The rest all felt like a normal MCU movie, just that this group happened to be a D tier Avengers + Winter Soldier. It had the same bits of Marvel comedy and was mostly shot the same as the other movies. The final action scenes inside the void were more towards the Dr. Strange and magic marvel movies, but still marvel movies.

So to go through a few of the characters. I liked Yelena before the movie and I like her after it.

The 3 super soldiers thing I didnt get. Why have 3 people who action wise are similar? And I think thats also why there were parts where I was dissappointed in what they had them doing during the action, but because theres 3 of them I'm more disappointed than if there was 1 of them not being used well. There were times when the super soldiers just stood still and got hit by things that took them out of the fight for a while. Why? They're supposed to have super reflexes. Captain America wouldnt have had that role. Then theres the team up scene where they all hold the rock face from falling on the woman together as they gradually come together to hold it and push it back. I feel like 2 super soldiers should be enough to do it but they had 3 plus the women. Again they felt watered down and with 3 of them 3 times the feeling it was a bit lame.

Valentina was no Amanda Waller. Obviously I wasnt expecting her to be the same character in charge of the "bad guys" but to be different and just as impactful and impressive. But for me she really shrunk and was a paint by numbers movie villain, other than the publicity stunt at the end. That was the one stand out part for her.

Ghost is quite cool to see a few times in action fights so I enjoyed that for a while. I didnt care about the character but I think she was one of the better inclusions for a team movie

A few other things. The Sentry/void starting to put the city in complete darkness was done in Invincible season 2 with Darkwing 2 so no originality points there. Sentry himself was Marvel's chance to do a Superman-ish character and I asnt impressed with how they presented him or his action scenes. When I compare it to Kryptonians in Man of Steel over a decade ago, or 'evil' Superman in Justice League the snyder cut, those scenes were far superior and far more memorable than the Sentry fight inside the building, and then inside the void it was Naruto talk no jutsu rather than an impressive fight.

Overall I wasnt looking forward to it after the trailers but when it was about to come out, I did get a bit excited hoping it would be good and I was a bit disappointed. For me even the first Suicide Squad was better let alone The Suicide Squad. Both had far more style, fun, stakes, and more interesting different types of characters.

I'd give it a 6.7, maybe a 6.8 at a stretch out of 10. If you love all Marvel movies you'll probably like it

I was expecting a lot more negativity from that after reading this post. Thought that was a pretty mild review? And it was definitely a review. He talked about acting, the plot, the MCU context, the cinematography, etc. He talked about things he liked and things he didn't.
 
Just watched it. I liked it. I was worried it would come across as poor copy cat of GotG, but they managed to add a decent amount of humour and pretty much all the characters were likeable. It's not perfect but it's enjoyable and like others have mentioned, a bit different in themes than most marvel movies
 
Saw it at IMAX last night and was really impressed with it. As others have said it’s far deeper and explores issue that I really didn’t see coming, or expect from a Marvel film.

Would very much recommend.
 
Anyone else feel it kind of fell flat in everything it tried? Action, humour, character work all felt just okay and I left the theatre feeling I should have just waited to watch it on the dodgy box in a month
 
Not much of a Marvel fan but went to see this on Saturday morning after seeing all the high praise reviews it was getting. Really enjoyed it, nothing perfect but certainly watchable. Not many Marvel films particularly post End Game have been good bar maybe 1 or possibly 2.
 
Whoever came up with the idea of the astrix and the rebrand post release, they need a payrise.
 
I enjoyed it but I felt it was a bit of an anti climax in that it went down the DC Arrowverse method of talking the villain down instead of actually defeating them.

Anyone could’ve done that, it didn’t need anyone with super strength or elite assassin training.

They woiuldnt have a hope in hell taking on sentry with force. Did you not see the scene where he was toying with them? That's an OG avengers level threat.

Planet blows up because of the firepower of 3 hataks ? A dozen hataks couldn't even dent an ori ship and our 304 destroyed the same ori ship with 2-3 shots with our uber asgard beams.

That was very clever. I can see other movies from other known franchises trying something like that

I thought the movie was ok.

Have you seen the movie? If you haven't it was a spoiler that has now been spoilt.

It's smart because you will probably attract more MCU fans who have grown weary of the franchise with the title change, it will peak some people's interest.

It's not particularly clever, it's just playing on hardcore's fans attachment to the previous group of superheroes in a pretty straightforward marketing move, but then again hardcore Marvel fans will lap up pretty much anything linked to the MCU.

If youre a die hard you'd have watched the movie in the first week most probably, so the name change makes sense to you.

If you were in two minds about watching, the name change marketing might peak your interest and you'll want to see what it's all about.

The name change post release is cool regardless though.

No sorry, I didn't mean it's a common thing (the only films I know that have changed titles after release have been linked to IP rights issues), what I meant is that it was rather straightforward to play on people's nostalgia and attachment to the Avengers. You wouldn't find many other, if any, examples, just because it wouldn't make any sense to do so for most films. It made sense in this one, but I didn't personally find it genius in any way. :)

I don't think it's fair to say it's a play on people's nostalgia, the new avengers are an actual team in the comics.

Maybe if the movie was directed by a bullying has-been whose only claim to fame was an ability to not feck up great source material, and his jizz riddled brain had recently released a completely bonkers and smug movie with all the depth of a primary school social sciences report, you'd be calling it a masterpiece.

But, alas, here we are. You'd probably argue that The Meg 2 isn't the finest film of the last ten years, you philistine.
 
Boring film and the mental health angle was tired and predictable. I can barely remember a single scene.

So they didnt change the name.

They just changed the posters.

The problem is now the posters dont show the name of the movie, so if someone who had no idea what it is sees the posters with "the new avengers" across the bottom, they dont actually learn what the name of the movie is which defeats the purpose of raising awareness. If some of those people are suddenly super interested from seeing the avengers name, or the poster they could google it. But for the people who were barely interested, see the poster and look at the cinema and theres no movie called the new avengers I'm sure they'll just move on with their life.
 
Disney looked at the people who didn't watch the shows and were confused with some of their new movies and probably thought "let's target the folks who don't watch the movies and put weird posters up".

So little more than a shit marketing gimmick. All those gushing interviews with the stars after made it sound like they had just made movie history by...ripping some paper.

That's such a specific hypothetical. Like you'd see the poster on the cinema website you were booking through? You'd speak to friends and colleagues who are into it and find out what's going on? In real terms if you had little interest before the name change, and still had little interest after, you probably are never going to watch regardless.
