Torres Have Been Given One More Week To Decide His Club

I cant see that Fergie will not sing anyone, but we have let others get on with business while we seem quite happy to hang around

I'll admit it's rather unsettling to see that we've not wrapped up any signing just yet - especially when the Smith & Joneses seems to have substantially completed theirs.

But the transfer window does not close for another 6 weeks.

Gill said in March/April that he hoped to have the signings completed before the World Cup. We can consider that perhaps he lied but I don't think that's quite his character. Gill, IMO, is a rather straight-talking guy (must be his Chartered Accountancy training). So, really what happened in the period between his published interview and now? One word - Calciopoli. The story & it's implications surfaced subsequent to his interview.

Imagine - if Utd has completed all our signings before the WC - say for example Diarra for Lyon's asking price of about £24m and now players like Vieira & Gattuso becomes available for a fraction of that - we would be hanging Gill and Fergie to dry for acting too hastily.

Besides, our "supposed" targets have stayed where they are. Our hands have not been forced and we're biding our time. We're not after a Bellamy, or a Palletta, or a Berbatov, or a Rosicky, or a Shevchenko. Okay - so we lost out on Ballack - but that deal died a long time ago. Our Diarras, Mascheranos, Gattusos, Vieiras and even Carrick have stayed exactly where they were at the close of last season. And we're taking our time and acting like we have options, less we be held to ransom over them -as it's common knowledge we're "desperate" to acquire top class CMs. And certainly we've not bought a Duscher, or a Petit, or a Reid or a Barton, or a Nolan, or a Makoun - when there were ample opportunities to.

Point well made, and taken. But Viera looks like he will stay in Italy, its all a little um and r about Gattuso. Mascherano and Diarra are both going to be expensive and it seems disinterested. We know what the asking price is for Carrick and we know that hell will freeze over before spurs accept less than 15 million for Carrick as they dont really want to, and dont have to sell him. So its a case of show them the money or move on.

Still think Nolan would be a good signing and develop into a good little player but that is besides the point.

There is ample time to make signings, im just speculating as to whether we are just biding time, or sincerely finding it difficult to find players that we deem good enough that are interested in coming to Old Trafford

I really cant see how come inter can bid that much amount, when they said that they will either sign zlatan or toni,i am sure its BS,

Offloading Adriano perhaps? Though there don't seem to be any club that can afford his valuation, that are keen right now. Real is signing Ruud, unless they're also getting rid of Ronaldo. Barca don't need another striker. Chelsea - You never know but would seem ridiculous unless they're replacing Drogba. Arsenal & Pool - probably too rich for them.

Or perhaps the money will come from higher expectation of TV revenue, assuming they can renegotiate their rights.

Does seem quite improbable especially when players like Toni & Trezeguet may be available for a fraction. And seems quite out of character for them to make such a big money signing - but maybe they're trying to act according to their newfound status as top dog.

My take on this is, that Torres wants to leave, but Utd is not his preferred choice. He'll know that staying one more season with Atletico will not hurt him, and more clubs will be in the position to compete for his signature properly. If he doesn't come this season, he probably never will any other time in future.

For this summer, I don't think that many team can make a realistic bid for him.

Red alert at Torres you-turn
From PHIL THOMAS

ATLETICO MADRID have made a dramatic you-turn and paved the way for Fernando Torres’ dream move to Manchester United.

Boss Alex Ferguson will step in with a £25million offer in the wake of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s departure.

Torres’ hopes of joining United looked dashed when Atletico director general Miguel Angel Gil insisted the Spanish hitman was not for sale at any price.

But now coach Javier Aguirre has admitted it is highly unlikely Torres, 22, will be in Madrid when the season starts.

The news will be just what Fergie wants to hear following Van Nistelrooy’s transfer request.

Aguirre revealed after talks with Torres: “I looked him in the eyes and asked if he could guarantee he would be staying but he said, ‘At the present time I can’t do that’.

“I know, the president knows and Torres knows there have been some negotiations behind the scenes. And I do not know whether I can count on him next season.”

Torres will be a straight replacement for Van Nistelrooy, 30. The Dutchman is expected to complete his £12m move to Real Madrid today.

Real delight as United allow Van Nistelrooy to go for £10m
By Jack Rashleigh in Madrid
Published: 18 July 2006

The Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy is expected to complete his move to Real Madrid today after the clubs settled on a fee considerably lower than United's original £16m asking price.

The two clubs are believed to have agreed a final fee of about €15m (£10.3m) for the 30-year-old Dutchman and he is due sign a three-year deal today, subject to a medical.

The player will be presented to fans later in the week before joining up with his new team-mates at their pre-season training camp in Irdning, Austria, at the start of next week. Real's need to bring in a new striker became obvious on Friday when their Brazil centre-forward Ronaldo confirmed that he needed an operation that would almost certainly rule him out of the start of the season.

Ronaldo decided to have the operation on Saturday - under the supervision of Brazilian national team doctors instead of Real's club doctors, which did not go down well with his club.

Despite Real's desperation - they are now without a recognised No 9 - it appears to be United who caved in on their original valuation of the player, set at £16m. United also wanted the deal closed ahead of talks to keep Cristiano Ronaldo and sign the Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

from the independent, £10mill for Ruud ! keep him

Deal is done! All over PNN!! Waiting on Ruuds transfer to get the ball rolling! Torres & Carrick in. Ruud Out. Bring on the new season!!!

I was thinking more along the lines of "galactico" buys - those that cost in excess of £20 million. Can't remember Inter having done that ever.

Mate how do you know that, whats the source of your story

Has Torres EVER expressed ANY desire to come to United? Ever?

What's this "dream move" nonsense? If he expressed any desire to play for United, when was it, and what did he say?

I don't think he's ever specified United. But if I remember correctly he has said he doesn't want to play for any other Spanish team other than Atletico, and others have mentioned that he has said he prefers England to Italy (although I've never seen that quote myself).

So it's a case of 2 + 2 = ???. It seems likely he will come to England when he does leave Atletico, and we seem to be the most likely of the English teams as he wouldn't start at Chelsea and the others probably don't have the finances. I don't think it's a case of him dreaming specifically about Man Utd as such. He's an Atletico fan, and they will always have his heart. There's no doubt he would love to spend his entire career there, but realistically they just aren't good enough to allow him to fulfill his potential (just like Rooney and Everton).

Even though he as not said he wants to play for us and the fact that we have not made a bid won't deter the Torres fans from creaming themselves. And even if we do get him is he really that good.

Same fecking quotes over, and over, and over and and over and over and over and ove..

Exactly what I was going to say.

There are two stories going at the moment. Firstly, his agent says he'll likely stay with Atletico. Secondly, the Atletico manager saying that Torres isn't sure what he's doing.

We get it already. You don't have to post the slightly different variations that appear of the two stories from every single football site on the web.

Just to set the record straight for these recent posters who appear keen to deride fans who is rooting to see Torres at United and who have not been following the "saga" from the beginning, in chronological order. These are factual :-

1. It's common knowledge and been widely quoted that he does not want to play for another Spanish team other than Atletico. This goes way back before the recent United link surfaced.
2. United & Fergie has been rumoured as admirers at least for a couple of seasons now, in the press and even on ManUtd.com's transfer speculation columns - which of course reports press speculations to United.
3. Torres said in an interview published in the magazine "442" that he prefers (to play/ to go?) in the Premiership than Serie A.
4. Before the World Cup began, reports circulated that Guillem Balague, Sky Sports' well connected Spanish correspondent, claimed that Torres was going to United. The source of this was a conversation he had with Torres and that Torres also asked him about the best residential location in Manchester. This is the likely source of all the frenzied speculation that followed.
5. Wenger, commentating for French TV during the World Cup, claimed that Torres will be going to United after the WC.
6. This week: Gil Martin, the Atletico president (?) says Torres is not for sale. They want to build a squad around/with him. He says that there has been some Italian enquiries but nothing from Manchester United.
7. This week: Torres' agent says Torres is not looking to move. He intends to see out the next 2 years of his contract. And that there has been no interest expressed to sign him from any club. As such, Torres intends to report for pre-season on July 21.
8. This week: Atletico's new coach says he has spoken to Torres but Torres did not guarantee him that he will be at Atletico next season.

Read what you may into this but also consider the audience for whom the comments were intended.

I honestly think we've got a chance to sign him, just my gut feeling.

I also remember interest from ourselves way back when Torres was a 17 year old. Think it was just before he made his debut A.Madrid.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Now that we go for cheap midfielders from Italy, we might even have enough money to get him

btw Inter have made a bid for him, we now either make one too or leave it

I would love to see Torres at OT, instead of Ruud. I think the price mentioned around 20-25m is pretty realistic for a talent like him. If we get decent money for Ruud then I guess the transfer money for Torres are available..
I think it's pretty obvious that IF SAF wants him he can get him. There are not many other real contenders to buy him.

In Italy there is of course Inter, but they seem to be buying Zlatan. Juve and Milan are having problems so they will not be buying...

Spain there is of course Real and Barcelona. But he would never sign for Real as he hates them and Barcelona have brought in Eidur Gudjohnsen so I don't think they are interested.

In Germany there is Bayern, but I don't think he would like to play in Bundesliga.

In England we have Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
I can't see Chelsea bringing in more strikers??? It would be too idiotic of Morinho.
I'm not sure Arsenal can spend that much money on one player, with there new stadium and all...
Liverpool are probably the biggest threat, but they have bought Bellamy already so I hope they are not interested in bringing in more strikers.

With only two years remaining of his contract, i guess Athletico would like to sell for the right price...

The only competition would probably be Chelsea, having too many players has never stopped them signing some more and it's not like Abramovich will care too much about another 20ish million.

I think Atletico are just given all these different messages in trying to put the blame on the player for leaving, much like Everton did with Rooney.

As I've said before AM have always to sell him as they know he has 2 years left on his contract, and if they held onto him now at this value, it would be a snip price next year or nothing in two years. So selling him now, while is value is at it's highest has always been in the club's best interests and moreso, intentions.

What AM wanted is for Torres to come out himself and claim he wants to leave, and shoulder the blame off the board so they don't end up with major supporter unrest.
