In Utrecht he was also a sporting director so yes he's done this before.

Of course I won't compare Utrecht and United but it's clear he wants players he personally watched or coached this season and hopefully next summer our own scouts can take over.
Just had to Google as that would be an interesting fact, but he was the manager and technical director, which meant he hired ground staff etc, different job to a director of football.

Like you say though, having a person be manger and director of football would be idiotic for a huge club, I'm not saying don't listen to the input of a manager, just that there should be a list of players drawn up, as it is the list seems to consist of one name.

Just hope Ten Hag doesn't receive most of the flack this season if it goes belly up because he's been hamstrung.

Very clear to see being bad at transfers isn't the only thing Murtough has learnt from Woodward, according to our board and their appointed cronies its always the manager's fault. Can't sign a player and have no alternatives, its actually the manager who wants him don't blame us, don't want to keep a guy whose telling too many hurtful truths, its the manager who wanted him gone, when the manager fails to magically convert the dross in to great players just like the previous managers failed to, its the manager who clearly can't coach, don't blame us we provided all we could.

Mate, we literally have been bitching about our scouts being useless for years now. ETH seems to have a played a huge role in their departure simply because they were not good enough.
From the Athletic:

Manchester United’s two leading scouts have left the club.
The club’s chief scout, Jim Lawlor, and Marcel Bout, the head of global scouting, have both departed the Premier League side, The Athletic can reveal.
Lawlor joined United in 2005 and was promoted to chief scout in 2014. Bout came in under Louis van Gaal, initially as a coach before moving into scouting.
Key to those changes will be the appointment of Erik ten Hag, who has reached an agreement in principle to become their next permanent manager, as The Athletic revealed earlier this month.
While we get the new network up and running, we have to lean on ETH for the targets. The reason is he is trying create a new culture and to instill his way of playing. For that you need players who already are familiar with that. So far he has targeted Timber, Antony, Martinez, De Jong. All players that know his system inside out. He also signed Eriksen who is a very technical player and fits his playing style to a T.

Is there an article you got this from?
Manchester United’s two leading scouts have left the club.
The club’s chief scout, Jim Lawlor, and Marcel Bout, the head of global scouting, have both departed the Premier League side, The Athletic can reveal.
Lawlor joined United in 2005 and was promoted to chief scout in 2014. Bout came in under Louis van Gaal, initially as a coach before moving into scouting.
Both were big voices in United’s recruitment, which has been widely criticised in recent months. In a statement to The Athletic, Manchester United said: “Jim Lawlor has decided to step down from his role as chief scout in the summer after 16 years with the club. “During that time, Jim played a key role in the development of multiple trophy-winning Manchester United teams and was an important source of guidance to Sir Alex Ferguson and each of the managers who have followed him.
“Jim leaves the club with our warmest thanks for his significant contribution and our very best wishes for the future. “Marcel Bout has departed from his role as head of global scouting after eight years with the club. A respected figure within and outside of Manchester United, Marcel has played an important part as an assistant coach and in the strengthening of our scouting capabilities in recent years. “Marcel leaves the club with our warmest thanks for his significant contribution and our very best wishes for the future.” The moves will be seen as a moment of change in United’s scouting structure and will attempt to streamline an operation that critics have said has become too top-heavy. John Murtough has full control of the football operations and has driven some of the changes as he seeks to help turn United around. Key to those changes will be the appointment of Erik ten Hag, who has reached an agreement in principle to become their next permanent manager, as The Athletic revealed earlier this month.

How influential were the two men at Manchester United?
They were involved in many signings and, writing in his 2013 autobiography, Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Jim Lawlor, United’s chief scout, pointed out to us that it was a waste for Henrik Larsson to be playing in Sweden when he still had so much to offer on a bigger stage. “Helsingborg's, where Henrik was playing, would not sell him, but I asked Jim to ask their chairman what they would think about him coming on loan. Henrik pushed the boat in that direction with his employers.” Larsson, 35, was a cult figure among United’s players. Lawlor was also the scout who left a calling card for Javier Hernandez in Mexico. Lawlor had been tipped off about Hernandez by the former Mexican international footballer Marco Garces. He had spent four years studying for a sports science degree at Liverpool John Moore's University and became friends with Lawlor, who worked at the university before joining United. Garces returned to Mexico to work for Pachuca’s academy where Lawlor asked him to recommend Mexican players. The name Javier Hernandez came back in September 2009. Lawlor visited Mexico for three weeks in February and March 2010 to make an in-depth assessment of the player.

If he's still determined to leave, why is he in the squad? Don't get it.

Um no? What have I missed?
I think there was a definite switch in stance by Ronaldo’s camp about a week ago where he started talking about not believing the media etc.

I certainly took this as being him trying to change the narrative about his plans, albeit because he’d had all the doors closed on any potential moves

Down south...somewhere
really does show the state of the club and the lack of strikers when we're complaining about not being able to play Martial - when the majority of posters on here (myself included) were expecting him to leave as he's not United material - and we're having to play a 37 year old striker who wanted to leave and refused to turn up to pre-season (I don't buy the personal family excuse). How did the club think we could go into the season without a new top striker..

The club is done. We are the next Leeds. No one is too big to fall.

Beyond embarassing this. The club keeps saying that they want the right player and this is what they fecking come up with. Shambolic.

Shambles. Fans need to chase the Glazers out the club immediately.
Buy galaticos. We don’t want that!
Buy a player that is suited to the managers wants and needs. All be it an OBVIOUS stop gap. Nah we don’t have ant that either!
Buy a high celiinged prospect for £30M+ - Nah don’t ant that either! Far tooo much money!

I never said we are going to get relagated immediately? The feck you on about?

How long do you think we can sustain not winning shit and still being relevant? 5 more years? 10? We will reach a point when the money will start drying up and the gulf between us and the top clubs revenue wise will start widening.

Players like Sesko would have put in a transfer request if we were in for them 10-15 years ago.

So it's true. You would have thought Manchester United would respond to their worst season in ages with... a very different summer window than were having. Seems like another 5th to 7th season for us.
