    Deeney is full of it.

    Ozil missed a chance.
They scored from a scandalous penalty decision.
Offside winner that coincided with Xhaka falling asleep, (Wenger should send him to the reserves for that, but he won't)

That is how they won the game, not by out-muscling or bullying us.

If grit and toughness is all you need to succeed in this league then why don't Stoke and Watford challenge for Europa league places?

Why have Man City won the league recently and may do so again this year? Their players aren't any less mollycoddled than ours. We just aren't good enough and Wenger/the board refuses to buy us the players we need to compete. Even some supporters thought this squad was good enough to challenge with one or two additions or Wenger is holding the team back. Wenger is holding the club back sure but this group of players are as good as they're going to get. No back up wing backs, poor depth in midfield and a lack of future planning with several players out of contract next summer, a world cup summer with no replacements in sight.

Similarly, for all Deeney's talk, whenever an Arsenal player does try to be a bit hard or go in for a tackle, he usually gets booked or sent off. Referees couldn't wait to send Xhaka off last season. Its hard to be a tough tackling team when referees are far less lenient on you than they are other teams.

The second half was embarrassing from Arsenal. You took Iwobi off and played for the draw by bringing Holding on. Gomes made an outstanding save at 1-0 to keep Watford in the game too. It was not a scandalous penalty decision. It was shoulder to shoulder and Richarlison had just got infront of Bellerin. Whilst i agree it wasn’t a foul, in real time it looked 60/40 in Richarlisons favour, especially from where i was sitting behind the goal.

The fact Deeney was able to bully your defence, especially Mertesacker who towers above him and until troy came on had one of the easiest games of his life. Deeney won all the balls Gray wasn’t, and in the end your defence was petrified of Richarlison and showed no steel and grit to control the game.

When you see the winner you see how out muscled and bullied you was. If Deeney gives up on the ball he was never gonna score from it, its an easy take for Cech. Instead he hassles and chases and ends up taking out the defender and forces Cech to commit, leaving the goal open which ultimately led to the easy finish for Cleverley. You couldn’t handle Deeney when he came on.

Well Deeney is right, Arsenal are as weak as Budweiser. You never sense they are up for the fight, but i guess that might change a bit now Jack Wiltshire is in the mix again. Jack certainly has been getting stuck in playing some reserve games.

Yep, you're right - Arsenal clearly has no issues in the toughness department.

I agree. Though I think there's some truth in Deeney's analysis, in that even from the highlights you can see Arsenal's defenders struggled to shut Watford down in the second half, it's hardly news. Still, it's fun to watch, as were the highlights of the game and AFTV.

Think Deeney is a touch bitter. There was talk of him perhaps going to Arsenal a couple of seasons ago but think Wenger poo pooed that thought pretty quickly when it surfaced. In other words Deeney was never going to be good enough for him.

Agree that it's not your typical post match spiel but it's easy to be bullish like that when you've scored, grabbed a last minute win and riding on a high.

Look at their midfield they are lacking more technically than "toughness" wise.

An interesting perspective, none the less. That invincibles side was the real deal though, I admit. They were probably on the face of a wider wave coming to shore during a time when English football started to move away from being a 'tough mans game' culture to a more honed and technically proficient product. That invincibles team had some of that late 90's legacy grit from the that was born out of SAF's United crucible. That 'never give in' ethos that was born at Old Trafford under Ferguson.

The 'bottler' part is hard to define and quantify, I think there may be some cultural undertones to it. But probably more to do with Wenger evolving through the last couple of decades at the club. Who knows.

Brilliant comments. Wish we saw more of this, honesty from players instead of the usual drivel that comes out.

Not only honest and spoken with passion, also very true

Whether you agree with Deeney or not he’s in a better position than anybody here to talk about it. If he enjoys playing Arsenal because he thinks Watford can bully them, other players across the league will be thinking the same thing and they draw confidence from that.

    Never a truer word spoken.

They look so brittle. The worst thing is that this is exactly what we expected.

It's a sad state of affairs when a player on a mid to lower pl team enjoys playing against a supposed top pl team

If Deeney had bigger cojones he would've never missed that pen.

Then you realize that Arsenal have no cojones at all and have proved Deeney right with their abysmal performances this season.

I doubt he cares about his own cojones, he gets paid millions to rough up people on a grass pitch 90 minutes a week.

His point was never about his.

He was spot on about what he said about Arsenal. His mistake was saying out loud what we have all thought for years.

    Heh.

It was all bollocks, what he said. Unless you buy into that "rah-rah", "get stuck in" mentality, of course.

Deeney was talking crap. He's something of a thug though so not particularly surprising.

The reason why Arsenal are rubbish is because they've an average team. It has nothing to do with the size of their balls.

He's made himself look stupid but he isn't wrong. I think Arsenal don't have cojones (in the other words: guts, determination, grit, fight etc.) but if you put me up against Arsenal I'd be an embarrassment.

I knew he'd miss that pen.

I don’t think his general point was wrong. Just because he’s an average player doesn’t mean his opinion shared by most fans on Arsenal under the latter years of Wenger isn’t wrong.

Arsenal actually have some good players and when everything is going well they can show it like today and against Milan.

That's the point. He's a professional and saying what he said about his fellow professionals was poor, especially when you had just beaten them and they are already down. That was an disrespectful and I'm glad he got embarrassed for his 'cojones' today, should teach him a lesson about talking that openly about other people.

Yeah this thread looks funny now...not.

Someone as thick as Deeney doesn't realise little interviews like that just put a little doubt into refs heads about players...

Chased after an arsenal player and as he laid it off he elbowed him in the face on the way passed. Clearly meant to throw his weight around a bit, went too far.

Deeney is an idiot for going for the classic late barge, definite yellow because Torreira is a midget and there is contact with his elbow but never a red.
