Does anyone actually have any idea what most of our players are getting paid or are they hyper-inflating figures to bash our management some more? How people believe that Jones is on 100k a week is beyond me... unless I get a super reliable source I would never believe that.

I think people are fueled with so much anger that they're making things up to justify their outrage
Eh? he's been here 10 years, he isnt paid in gummi bears

Im not against paying premium wages to premium players, I can understand why we gave Pogba, Alexis and even De Gea on a clear decline such contracts. What I dont really understand is why we not only renew failed players but we also give them improved terms. Players like Rojo, Jones, Pereira who have never been solid players for us and yet we offer them a payrise, why? its beyond me.

A recent example is Brandon Williams, sure he's a youngster and has the potential to be our starting left or right back eventually, but we gave him a 60K a week contract, why the feck did we do that? Paying a youngster as if he was already the finished product. Its not as if he had much better offers and would have turned down the contract if offered 30K for example. Now we just got ourselves in a very weak position, if he doesnt make it there's no way we can shift him on those wages and if he makes it then he's going to want another increase. So either way its a lose-lose situation.

For all the shit Woodward gets I think this is by far his worst, I dont think there's a worse managed top club in the world wages wise than us.

Even the most ridiculously optimistic newspapers called his deal £40k, he'll be on around the £30k you mentioned, chill out.

On this point, I'm wondering: who makes these salary decisions, and what are they basing them on? As far as I can tell, United's moneymen are generally pretty good; how come they can't assess the football salary market better? As you or someone else said, it makes no sense that a club like United could sign a player like Telles only if they pay him this much. So again, how and why does it happen anyway?

I have seen comments that having a Director of Football would solve this, but is that what they do? I thought they would be there to oversee the sportive direction of the club: ensure coach and players fit the vision in terms of approach, ethos, playing style, ensure that this vision runs through the entire club from the youngest academy levels to the first team, and direct the scouting apparatus accordingly. Would this also be the person that assesses the market and determines what a club should be paying in terms of transfer fees and salaries?
I think looking back over the last 20-25 years it's about club philosophy. I posted previously about United having a "socialist" ethos that meant the lower contributors couldn't earn several times lower than the higher contributors. Likewise Fergie himself apparantly was of the view that a player could never earn more than him otherwise he'd be undermined (typical socialist I'd say!)

In truth back then it's arguable that it was an equitable endeavour. He got more out of his squad players than any other manager ever and in truth rarely lost his best earners (despite the likes of Keane and Ferdinand being close).

The problem nowadays is that wages are far more important than transfer fees. Back when Keane had signed the highest paid contract in England (after much negotiatio - £52k per week) the highest transfer fee was Zidane at around £48m. Since then transfer fees have multiplied by less than 5 whilst wages have multiplied at double that rate. Likewise we've previously spent over 150% of our EBITDA net in one transfer window (Veron and Ruud); that would be like spending £300m net now which is unthinkable.

I think essentially accountants making these decisions aren't the best people. Financial people are often really good at seeing numbers but really poor at seeing "the bigger picture" (I've experienced this when talking to my own business accountant who for example says "transactions below £100 are loss making, I'd advise a minimum order value of £100". Not realising that the action of implementing such a policy would lose hundreds of four figure orders in the process as you can't pick an choose orders.

I think United are run by financial people who similarly think "buying a replacement for Lingard may cost £25m, whereas paying him £2m above market value for 5 years only costs £10m". As I said previously that's completely flawed as not only does it reduce his resale value by a huge amount but it increases the negotiating position of every other player meaning they'll also be getting £2m each above market value.

Without being a fly in the negotiating room I think we're run by people who consider financial decisions in a very narrow vacuum as financial people often do. A director of football I doubt would help as they wouldn't be given autonomy over our complete wage structure; that'll always stay with Woodward.

I remember reading 40K rising to 60K. Hopefully he's under 30K as you say.

He barely played for 3 years prior to that contract. Why on earth would he be offered 100k a week?!

I'm not claiming he definitely isn't but at the same time no one actually references reliable sources when quoting how much he gets paid (Bar the media, which as we know aren't exactly the most trustworthy!!).

According to some he is being paid 70k/w and if that is true he would be the highest paid defender at the club that would be interested by some distance.

I don't really understand the OP. But as long as we have Woodward we won't be turning over the squad properly and we'll continue to try and sign big headline hunting players on ridiculous wages that their value on the pitch will rarely match.
I actually don't blame Woodward signing Galactico class players, for big wages. I makes sense commercially, but on the pitch, Galactico class players can win matches.
The problem I have is when we dish out big contracts to players like Phil Jones. Why on Earth would anybody pay wages to that guy. Pereira, Lingard, Rojo, etc.

Jones is the worst contract decision of them all. We knew he was a crock. Jut let him go. Instead we give him a four year deal. Madness. Prime years as a centre half my arse.

You should move towards what Spurs do in player contracts: keep basic wages low (relatively speaking), but provide very generous bonuses for targets achieved. That way it's easier to sell players if you want to and it incentivises player performance.

Any specific figures being mentioned as a wage for Cavani?

If he's not had a steep decline I think he could definitely be a valuable player to have for a season, but hope we're not shelling out something ridiculous for his services...

He comes on a free so overall it won't be that expensive. He will bring a different perspective in our play.

$200k a week on a one year deal with option of a second year.Reasonable I would think. The bigger issue are the potential agent fees in the region of 10m.

I just want him to be paid what he's worth, for his performances to be in correlation to his wages. If those performances will be worth 200K a week, that'd be great.

Cheers. That's a pretty steep agent's fee. Strange that a player at his age would be limiting his options for an agent get a big payday. Unless his agent is a family member...but even so.

The more I think about Cavani, the more I get excited in a really weird way. Won't surprise me if he ends up being our main striker by December.

People need to forget Sanchez. He was just in for the money. Cavani had collected enough money during PSG and I think he'll be really in it with us this time.

Why is being a sports agent not considered a dream job yet?
There are thousands of aspiring football agents, like any profession, only a select handful get anywhere. If you're an actual KING at networking, sport agency might just be for you! It's either that, or have your son become the best player in the world and make a career as a successful 1 player football agent. (Jorge Messi)

He's here for the money. his agent and mother said this previous

Guglielmone explained, if it were for money, Edi would have gone to England, Manchester (United) or Chelsea.”

The Uruguayan agent continued, “Do you think that Edi did not play for almost a month with the PSG so that I could drop the operation for a commission and that Edi did not fulfil his dream of going to Atletico Madrid?”

These comments were echoed by the player’s mother, Berta Gómez, who in an exclusive interview with AS, argued “Edinson did not want money to be a problem, because if it had been for money he would have gone to Manchester United, Chelsea or Inter Miami, who made an important offer for him.

Oh dear.
Buddy. Cavani has been offered up to anybody who'll have him. He is a free agent.
Nobody has bitten, except for us.
I assure you, he is not coming to MUFC because he loves the club. He is coming (like Sanchez) for the money.
If Chelsea offered to pay him £225kpw, he'd probably go there.
Basically this is his last big pay day and he will take whoever offers him the most (which makes sense....I'd do the same).

This deal is Sanchez and Falcao, combined.

Of course he is a professional football player. But he is a professional so he is not going to want to go back just after the first training session. I certainly hope not. He was said to be a team player and there are Spanish speakers and French speakers at United for communication not to be a problem.

I didn't say he is coming here because he loves the club, of course he doesn't, but I'm optimistic he will want to put a good effort in it here, unlike Sanchez.

I don't thinks so. Just look at what we have Reportedly given Dean Henderson, he hasn't done much for us and is on 100k a week. He is in the top 5 highest paid keepers in the league. At another big club he would be on the 60k mark. We purposely put ourselves in this position time and time again.
Henderson is about the top 5 keeper in the league last season though. If we don't extend him the contract, he would be tempted to move to other top clubs in Premier league... there are quite a number of clubs interest in signing him to be fair.

Add in to all those concerns that he was injured with muscle injuries majority of last season and will be 34 in Feb I think.

The strategy of signing "galactico" class players on big wages hasn't and doesn't work.

Mata - 150k a week
Henderson - 150k a week
Lingard - 120k a week
Smalling - 120k a week
Jones - 100k a week
Rojo - 90k a week
Romero - 90k a week
Pereira - 75k a week
James - 70k a week
Dalot - 50k a week

How much is that per week on unused players?

Giving Jones a 5 year contract last year was unbelievably stupid. We are run by clowns.
There are lot of poor salaries here but this one gets me. At what point did he look like he'd be worth 75k a week? He should be on ~40k. There's plenty more here too that we can criticise but he's literally never had a good patch where we thought he may be worth something.

That is a dream outcome for players but still no, and mostly because it takes a points total that saf never achieved to take the title off Liverpool and city. If we managed to pull off the signings which isn't looking that likely I'd hope we would add 10 points to our tally and make some waves in the cl, that would be our best showing post saf and show the progress that can be made with sensible signings and a positive approach

What I can't understand is why have all these scouts and they cannot find us some top players from all over the world.
We are bringing in the top young players for our accademy. Yes, some don't make it, but why can't we have the same pattern for first team players. We shouldn't have to break the transfer record every transfer window for players if these scouts were doing their job. There are players out there that could go on to be world class and that we could fetch for a small fee. Going for all English players only put the price up and wages. I read that we have over 60 scouts working for us. They should be at least able to spot some top players every window.
