Why do so many people think he'll "never play for the club again" or he will be "gone in January"?

We've just made him the highest player at the club. He's going absolutely nowhere any time soon.

As for the trip to the States, he didn't have a proper pre-season and he's had trouble with injuries. He's obviously carrying far too much weight so the club are trying to rectify that.

Some of you lot (and some sections of the media tbf) will make something out of absolutely everything.
Yeah, it's ridiculous.

For various different reasons a lot of people on here WANT Rooney to leave. The best way for them to deal with this is by deciding he WILL leave and they won't be persuaded otherwise, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

It is odd but you can see why they do it.

Gaz. Is a Mewling Quim.

I'm not the one airing full blown conspiracy theories.

The simple fact is, he went in with hard ball negotiating tactics, and he got what he wanted. Simple.

Can we please fecking move on now.
So thinking he will leave after disrespecting the club like everyone before him isn't common sense to you, but in reality a conspiracy theory?

You remind me of someone...

I think it's the other way round - a lot of people feared/couldn't believe the idea that Rooney might be leaving, and definitely didn't want to believe that he might want to leave. The best way for them to deal with that was by deciding he was going to leave, they went into "don't need him" mode and they aren't ready to lower their guards.

Yes, I think that dynamic is going on. Agreed. I was trying to allude to that as one of the "various different reasons" but your explanation is spot on. It also explains the sudden and widespread under-rating of him as a player.

There are two hypotheses:

1. The club and the player wouldn't behave like this if there was agreement/a real possibility Rooney to leave January/June.

2. The club and the player wouldn't behave much differently even if there was an agreement the player to be sold January/June. (Otherwise, the atmosphere at the club would be unhealthy and the season would be a disaster.)

Those who embrace (1) think that all the evidence supports (1). Those who reject (1) think that the available evidence is fully compatible with a behind the doors agreemnt to sell Rooney January/March.

I think (1) is a more likely scenario but dismissing (2) out of hand is wishful thinking.

He's a professional who is looking after himself. He, and his agents, have negotiated a hell of a deal.

Fans really should come to realise that the majority of players don't care as deeply for the clubs they play for as we do...

It's absurd to think that he's signed a bumper new deal but he's still leaving. SAF and Gill also wouldn't have come out and said what they did after the deal was signed if he was off.

I expect most fans do realise this but Rooney has made a big thing about loving United. Didn't he say he wanted to stay here for life?

Sorry but I won't be welcoming him back to the fold after his antics.

Some very deluded characters on here. Pogue, Feed Me, and CW have got it spot on.

No one is delighted with Rooney. Far from it. But convincing yourself he is going to leave, based on Ronaldo, which was a totally different story (considering he left 2 years after he signed his last contract) is bollocks.

Which makes it strange that "Ronaldo" is repeatedly used as all the evidence we need Rooney will be moving on the same season he signed a new contract.
