US Men's National Team Discussion

The pressure on him with Germany will be to win or fail. The US job would put the sport on the map in in the States and bring it to another level popularity never seen before. I think the media and fans would have loved him if he would have taken the job but doesn’t look likely. That said I can see them getting Tab Ramos who will fail

What win or fail pressure? Flick survived a group stage exit and Nagelsmann hasn't received any blame for going out in the QF either.

I think a potentially bigger issue for Klopp (regarding the US job) could be that he seems to be center/left on the (German) political spectrum and doesn't seem to hesitate to express his opinions from time to time.

Which is where most USA soccer fans are. MLS games are the most inclusive sporting events I have ever seen.

The women do not have a thread on here so I’ll use this one to mention that Alex Morgan announced her retirement today. What an amazing player she was.

Met her about 10 years ago while i was at IMG and the USWNT was doing a camp there....super nice and my god in person she was sooooo attractive

time for her to retire though....the US team needed her to step away and not overshadow this new generation of young attackers

Porch has a lot of work on his hands. Decades of rot and entitlement to overcome . It is a team devoid of ideas on both sides of the ball and no urgency whatsoever.

First game of a new era. Lots of players out injured, but interested in seeing how Poch organizes the midfield.

Nice first win for Poch with a depleted roster. Love that he played Pulisic on the left instead of centrally. Basically putting our two best players on the same wing (Pulisic and Robinson) and just letting them create stuff. First goal came from that and most all the chances in the first have were from the left hand side.

I am developing a semi irrational dislike for Aaronsson. His combination of weak as piss, lack of football IQ, and poor technical skills is maddening.

I didn't stay up to watch but saw the highlights. Mexican player shoves a US player from the side of the head, obvious hands to the face. No sending off though may not have mattered that late in the match and a two-goal deficit. But I guess we're just letting players smack other players in the face/head these days.

Jimenez with a peach of a free kick and Mexico controlled much of the match from what little highlights shown on ESPN SC.

The US didn't get many shots off, outshot 17-5 and 5-1 on goal, yet with a slight possession advantage 53-47. I can remember games against Mexico where we knew the US would hold little possession, often less than 40%.

I only watched the first half but the ref was letting pretty much everything go on both sides. There were a fair few fouls that would have been yellows if it was not a friendly, but..."friendly", so things seemed to keep escalating.

As for the game, Mexico seemed way more up for it and the US seemed jittery and timid. I am sure that Aaronsson is a nice guy, and he has an excellent engine, but holy shit is he weak and in a physical game he was little brothered all over the place. By my count there was only one "First XI" lock on the field for the US (A. Robinson) and 2 maybe's (Turner, Musah) and boy did the gulf in class show. Our best guys can't stay healthy, so I think we should accept that the WC squad is going to be way more B team guys then we want.

As an aside, the fact the host nation(s) are auto qualifiers for the WC is a disservice to them. The US plays no competitive games till the WC and most top nations will be playing their own qualifiers during each international window, so finding competitive friendlies will be next to impossible. Additionally, guys just aren't going to want to risk it for friendlies (understandably) and so the rosters for the games you do get will be light on starters which means they get even less time to work together.

Thinking about going to the game in STL in November. Anyone think it would be worth the price of admission?

Depends on what the ticket prices are. It is a "competitive" game in the sense it is a Nations League game, and Jamaica could be an interesting opponent if their big players (Bailey and Antonio) show up. I have been to a few games over the years and they were a good time.

A bunch of the first XI will still be out (Balogun, Dest, Adams, Reyna, Weah for sure).

STL SC fans are a rocking crowd. Wondering how the crowd shows up to a USMNT game. I've been watching a lot of Championship games and Norwich always seems to be on. Sargent has been rocking it this season so far. Plus hometown kid. Would love to watch him there.

Field is an absolute disgrace and it looks like Johny C. is going to be a casualty of it. At the rate it’s tearing up there won’t be grass left by then end of the game.

that is concacaf for you with these away pitches especially in the tropical countries
Oh, I know. The confounding thing is that the majority of the Jamaican team is now Europe based players and so I would hazard a guess that the field equally hurts their game as well, so the field shenanigans make no sense. You could tell both teams were going about 70-80% full speed as they were all terrified of injury/falling/completely missing the ball as it bounced at a 90-degree angle. Feel for Johny and hope his injury is minor. Look like he got turf snippered.

agreed....it hurts the home players as much as the american players as neither could really play any sort of proper football

clearly the fear of injury plays a massive factor in how players attack certain things...really is a shame but what do u expect playing this late after hurricane season

Confident and easy game so far. Really impressed by Tessman. He is so calm and smooth on the ball.

Pulisic celebrating his goal with a Trump dance is the least surprising thing ever. What a tool.

impressive first half performance.... a bit flat the second half would be the only disappointing thing i would say out of the result

How do things look like they're progressing under Pochettino?

I think these games are available to watch on YouTube over here in the UK, so I'm intending to watch them.

Looking at the starting XI for the SF, is Tanner Tessman highly rated? He's the only starter I don't know too much about.

And on the bench, how about Patrick Agyemang? I see he's scored in both his US games so far.

Tessman is at Lyon, so you should be seeing more of him soon :) . He is, in my opinion, a decent 8. Ok passing with both feet and decent vision.

Agyemang is a late bloomer, a 4 year college guy. Very direct.

Couple thoughts:

- 4pm local start time means the stadium is basically empty.
- Usual CONCACAF reffing. Panama kicking lumps out of US and no fouls, Panama player falls down, foul.
- Poch starting Tessman was a weird call. Panama plays incredibly narrow and the field is barely regulstion width. It seems like Luna or Reyna would be the better option to operate in packed spaces.

Thanks. :+1:

And I agree about clearly missing the first choice FB's.

Shame Sargent's goal was offside. Still no international goal for him for 5 years! Presumably Balogun and Pepi are still the main #9's? I know Balogun has been suffering with injury for a while and his development stalling. Is Pepi injured as well? And how is he progressing? He seems to be having a good season at PSV.

Yeah, Pepi had season ending knee injury I think. Tillman also out for a bit.

Oh, yeah, I'd forgotten about Tillman.

He's also doing well at PSV, after a good loan spell there (and at Rangers).

Some big losses in the forward line, as well as the attacking FB's.
