What is the difference between the Matip and Dias handballs? Why is one given and the other one not even worthy of a replay? Why are refs so inconsistent?

City scored in the immediate aftermath of that incident (the ball didn’t go out before they scored). Probably who it wasn’t reviewed. You have to ask this question?

Surely a pen, or should be?
Possibly some total bs about handling on the ground? Can't think why in the laws it wouldn't be.
I think he heads it onto his arm rather than it hitting his arm directly? That might make a difference, especially as his arm was in a fairly natural position relative to the movement. You have to ask this question?

We went over all of this last season after the Arsenal game. It’s not a penalty if the hand the ball hits is being used to support his body when he falls over. That’s been the rules for a while now. This was a much more obvious example than the Arsenal one (where it looked like Cedric actively scooped the ball with his hand)You have to ask this question?

He didn’t fall over. He tried a diving header and got it wrong. It’s more of penalty than the one givenWe went over all of this last season after the Arsenal game. Pretty debatable he's supporting with his hand. Need closer replay. We went over all of this last season after the Arsenal game. Fall/dive whatever. The hand was supporting his bodyweight. Which is the point they will consider. He didn’t fall over. He tried a diving header and got it wrong. It’s more of penalty than the one given
The rules. There will be no penalty if:
a player is falling and the ball touches their hand/arm when it is between their body and the ground (but not extended to make the body bigger)
This is guidance, deliberate handball is a penalty. The rules.
Sounds good. The one and only element of VAR I would be in favour of is when it comes to offsides, if they can make it more accurate than the line drawing fiasco.
I’m glad that won’t be called a pen this season (if they are consistent), as it was clearly unintentional.Handballs by Arsenal players aren't penalties this season either.
Argie bargie. How has that Martinez foul not been overturned?![]()
No penalty given? Horrendous if not.How the feck is this not a pen and would do Goalkeepers seemingly operate under completely different rules?

The Martinez call was bizarre. If the Doucoure push on Chillwell is a penalty (It was) then so is that Martinez foul. They go 3-0 up and you have no chance of getting back into the game and there is no nervy final 20 minutes for them.Tweet

Thought we were lucky twice yesterday with the McT challenge (I thought it was a bit reckless) and the Martinez penalty (thought it was a definite penalty).
Also apparently Welbeck was onside when he brought down the ball out of the sky and did both of our CBs?
We were sat at the other end of the ground and we all thought it was a pen. Bizarre decision from the ref, and from VAR (and from Martinez!)The Martinez call was bizarre. It's depressing that it's the first game and refereeing/VAR inconsistencies are already an issue.
I thought McT just about kept his foot angled down enough to make it a yellow card. But we've certainly seen red cards for those in recent years.Tweet

I’m still puzzled how VAR literally reviewed that & came to the conclusion that there’s nothing in it and to allow play to go onGarbage
How did Romero not get sent off and Chelsea get a free kick when he yanked Cucerella down by his hair?!
They really should be forced to explain their reasoning in cases like this.I’m still puzzled how VAR literally reviewed that & came to the conclusion that there’s nothing in it and to allow play to go on
The mind boggles.
It is pretty shocking that they don’t have to, especially with the introduction of VAR. It literally changes games and is the difference between 3, 1 or 0 points. They really should be forced to explain their reasoning in cases like this.
They really should. The level of protection is absolutely insaneThey really should be forced to explain their reasoning in cases like this.
