What is the difference between the Matip and Dias handballs? Why is one given and the other one not even worthy of a replay? Why are refs so inconsistent?

Really frustrating the time it takes to get to a decision when it's so simple and the inconsistencies of the decisions.

Instead of talking about the mistakes of refs pre VAR, we are now talking about the mistakes of VAR.

I wouldn't miss it if they pulled it.

You have to ask this question?

Surely a pen, or should be?

Possibly some total bs about handling on the ground? Can't think why in the laws it wouldn't be.

City scored in the immediate aftermath of that incident (the ball didn’t go out before they scored). Probably who it wasn’t reviewed.

There’s still issues with how long reviews take. They need to mic up referees and let them make the decision at the screen when they aren’t sure. Maybe consult the 4th official if needed.

I think he heads it onto his arm rather than it hitting his arm directly? That might make a difference, especially as his arm was in a fairly natural position relative to the movement.

Edit: also what Pogue said.

We went over all of this last season after the Arsenal game. It’s not a penalty if the hand the ball hits is being used to support his body when he falls over. That’s been the rules for a while now. This was a much more obvious example than the Arsenal one (where it looked like Cedric actively scooped the ball with his hand)

Looks like he's using his arm to support his body, in which case it doesn't count as a deliberate hand ball.

He didn’t fall over. He tried a diving header and got it wrong. It’s more of penalty than the one given

Pretty debatable he's supporting with his hand. Need closer replay.

Looks to me like he punches it clear pretty much. It should be a pen in the spirit of deliberate handball. Whatever the guidance is.

Another law's guidance to be rewritten shortly I guess.

Edit, also see Mbappe ludicrous given offside goal in nations league for which the guidance has now been changed.

The rules.

This is guidance, deliberate handball is a penalty.

To me this looks like deliberate handball.

Pending a closer replay. He clears it with his hand, deliberately.

It's the same BS as the Mbappe offside goal in the nations league.

You can argue why it's ok given the guidance referees are given.

It's totally against the spirit of the handball law.

Be interesting to see if this improves things. In theory it's faster and much more accurate.

How the feck is this not a pen and would do Goalkeepers seemingly operate under completely different rules?

Thought we were lucky twice yesterday with the McT challenge (I thought it was a bit reckless) and the Martinez penalty (thought it was a definite penalty).

Also apparently Welbeck was onside when he brought down the ball out of the sky and did both of our CBs?

The Martinez call was bizarre. If the Doucoure push on Chillwell is a penalty (It was) then so is that Martinez foul. They go 3-0 up and you have no chance of getting back into the game and there is no nervy final 20 minutes for them.

It's depressing that it's the first game and refereeing/VAR inconsistencies are already an issue.

We were sat at the other end of the ground and we all thought it was a pen. Bizarre decision from the ref, and from VAR (and from Martinez!)

I thought McT just about kept his foot angled down enough to make it a yellow card. But we've certainly seen red cards for those in recent years.

The Martinez challenge was one of those that small players seem to get away with. I agree though, penalty.

The Wellbeck offside was really annoying, even if it benefited us. Do they really think that linos can suddenly be so accurate as to judge if it might be offside, but only by less than a foot? This will not improve consistency.

It's been overlooked in the understandable inquests as to how United slumped to another new low today, but I thought Stuart Attwell had his usual shocker as well. Not giving us free kicks when he was giving them to Brentford. His biggest howler (and the lack of VAR intervention) was not giving a free kick to United for a blatant handball, but instead a corner to Brentford, which they scored their 3rd goal from.

Garbage

How did Romero not get sent off and Chelsea get a free kick when he yanked Cucerella down by his hair?!

Ridiculous decision.

You have to wonder what VAR is looking at sometime. Its a clear red card

Shocking decision today by Taylor. I am suspecting VAR ref told him what happened and he decided it wasn't a foul.

I’m still puzzled how VAR literally reviewed that & came to the conclusion that there’s nothing in it and to allow play to go on

The mind boggles.

They really should be forced to explain their reasoning in cases like this.

It is pretty shocking that they don’t have to, especially with the introduction of VAR. It literally changes games and is the difference between 3, 1 or 0 points.

Par for the course when Anthony Taylor is refereeing Chelsea games. Surprised it took him this long in the game.
