Currently watching the African Champions League final. They are using VAR for the first time.
WAC just scored a perfectly legit goal and the linesman flagged for offside. The referee refused to go to VAR to check as he let Tunis take a quick goal quick. WAC are now refusing to play. Even VAR can't stop the home bias in Africa.

Has this really been going on for 20 odd minutes? Guy on Bein sports is calling it a technical issue.
40 minutes almost now. If it isn't solved within the next 20 minutes then it will be replayed.
Tunis are saying that VAR hasn't been working all game, which is most likely a complete lie. There is huge corruption in African football and Tunis been heavily accused in the past. There is zero chance that VAR hasn't been working all game.

Match officially interrupted now, think it'll be replayed in the next couple of days. Completely crazy. Should have just given the goal via replays and agreed to finish the game without VAR if it really is faulty.

Yeah but if the game should be continued without VAR they should go with original linesman decision isn't it? Otherwise it will be selective use of replays. I know it's unfair but what would have happened if there was a clear penalty denied by ref?
They showed the replay in the stadium straight after so everyone knew it was onside. Apparently that can't be used under the regulations.
The game is meant to have VAR though and until this point the belief was VAR was in use. At least if the goal is given then the teams are informed that VAR is no longer in use then both sides know the script at least.
Fair enough but not sure if they can use other replays other than the one they have for VAR. Might be completely wrong but I thought that's how it works.
In any case, it's a farce that it has come to this, especially in (African)CL finals

This is ridiculous. If VAR is not working, they either continue and the ref makes his decisions without VAR, or they replay the game at a later date (which is difficult with the Africa Cup around the corner). Keeping everyone in limbo is absurd.

If VAR was not working for the whole game then the mistake seems to be not informing the teams of this. At that point, the game should continue as a normal non-VAR game and so replays shown on big screens, etc. can't be used (just like they couldn't be in the Millwall V Everton game earlier in the year with the handball by the Millwall player or with the Carlos Tevez offside goal in Argentina V Mexico at the 2010 World Cup.)
You would otherwise have an issue if a similar incident occurred at the other end and was not replayed on the big screens.

A bit harsh, but Semedo's knee caught him in flight, and it caused him to trip over his own feet, which is why it went to VAR. Seen them given and missed.
An accidental tangle of legs shouldn’t be a penalty. He’s a quality referee so not surprised he didn’t give it in real time. Watching multiple replays while the whole world waits for a decision seems to make referees overthink these things. See also multiple “handball” atrocities.
If you are running after a player and you accidentally catch his heels and make him fall, it's a penalty. A lot of this will happen this season with VAR.
VAR is meant to change clear and obvious mistakes. That was a 2 goal swing decision and it was most definitely not a clear and obvious one. It was a very slight touch and the Swiss player forces the trip. Guerreiro got tripped exactly the same way in the 80th minute inside the box and VAR didn’t do anything. If they think it might be a penalty then tell the ref to stop the game before the team has the chance to get to the other side of the pitch and score. To go from a 2-0 to 1-1 like that is as harsh as it gets.

You may be about to encounter the new-ish rule that says that all VAR decisions are by definition of emanating from the VAR process considered to be 100 % correct.
And anyway, the old way of doing it got stuff wrong too. There is that as well.
