Apparently the BBC and Netflix are collaborating on a new 4 part mini series of Watership down to air in 2017.
On one hand Im excited, and the 4 hour running time should allow a much more faithful adaptation of the book, and the cast sounds good - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watership_Down_(miniseries)
On the down side the Executive producer Roy Aitken has said: "While we won’t shy away from the darkness in the book, visually it won’t be as brutal and scarring." Not sure how I feel about that as the dark tone and brutality if the original film are part of its charm for me.

What say the Caf?

I remember it from my childhood as a most depressing film so you are probably right, remove that haunting air (I wouldn't call it charm) from it and it probably wouldn't have resonated in the same way it has. It might be more child friendly though.

Theres probably a happy middle ground between the darkness of the original and the sickly sweet tv series?

I still struggle to accept I live in a world where people intentionally showed this film to kids, whilst worrying about the affects exposure to partial-nudity and profanity may have on them.

Let's hope so, I'd have preferred that the first time around.

There are a number of things I watched in my childhood that had a more marked impact than any amount of porn ever has. The fact it was animated is probably why it was ever allowed to reach such a young audience.

Anyone else watched it? I had a feeling I'd hate it after growing up with the original and the book, but I have to say I really really liked it!

Absolute trash. The animation is appalling and it’s hard to actually differentiate between the different rabbit characters which makes it hard to follow who is who, who did what and the different personalities so it’s hard to get emotionally invested.

Must be your eyesight. I could tell the characters quite easily

I still can’t get over that the original was a kids movie. To this day I’m still a little traumatised by it but guess I’ll watch the new version still.

The book was one of the first I ever read and I loved it. The old film was really good too. I've recorded this version so really looking forward to it.

I've recorded it but not seen it yet, as a kid I watched the original over and over again and never found it disturbing, loved it. My brother hated it though.

It wasn't a kids movie really though, I mean it's not aimed at them. I guess many parents made the mistake of thinking it was for kids just because it was an animation about cute rabbits, well that and the 'U' certificate given here in the UK.
