I would give him whatever number he likes. Jones to step aside his number 4 for Varane?

Probably 22 because 2+2=4

Just like 2+5=7

If we magically get Haaland he'll have to settle for a Usain Bolt style number 4.5 or number 33 because yeah... 3x3=9 and Martial will definitely not give up the number 9 shirt.

:D

No.15 made so much sense.

Vidic 15
Varane 15.

Legendary.

And when we put them on the field,
5 - Maguire 15 - Varane.

We're back to glory days!

Since #4 and #15 are taken at the moment he could take #12. Once worn by legendary centre-back Chris Smalling.

It should be 4 but will probably be 38 or something.

Are we seriously considering leaving the no 4 with Jones?

We may as well give it to Ole as there is more chance of Ole getting on the pitch than Phil.

Tom Heaton has been wearing 22 in pre-season

I reckon he’ll wear 12 to emulate his heroes, Chris Smalling and Phil Neville

#4, no reason to leave it on a player who never plays, he can take some random squad number until he's fit enough to be released into the wild.

As if we we missed out on him cos of Jones!

Almost 10 years later Varane is actually coming home and will basically send Jones packing taking his number in the process.

Talk about reverse karma

Jones the fraud has been stealing a living at utd for way too long now so let's just get him smashed tomorrow night with Harry on the Voddy & Jaeger, gift him a donner kebab from the local 3AM joint & uber him back home never to return to Carrington again.

Please & Thanks Dazzy Fletch & Murtzy

Who would choose to give Pogba the number 6? It looks awful on him. It's a CB number.

I think 5 and 6 were/are recognised as centre-back numbers in the UK, but in France and other European countries, it was 4 and 5, with 6 and 8 being for the two central midfielders. From memory, Jonathan Wilson's book Inverting the Pyramid talks about it, and how formations evolved over time in different countries, gradually turning from the likes of 2-3-5 into 4-4-2 etc.

In the 2-3-5, the full-backs were 2 and 3, the half-backs were 4, 5, and 6, and the forwards were 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. In different countries, different players dropped back into defence/midfield as formations shifted, hence the differences from country to country.

But I agree - to my eye, 5 and 6 are centre backs, and 4 and 8 are central midfielders. It always confused me as a kid seeing Steve Bruce wearing number 4. Don't get me starting on Lee Sharpe wearing 5!

give Jones 84 and give Verane 4. A proper number for our best defender. Better still give Jones away as no one will buy him.

First, wow.
Second, I think Bruno would go on strike if we took the 8 off Mata and gave it to someone else.
Third, similar to the first point, wow.

Still winds me up that we've got 2 and 3 with bloody centre backs.

Same. And Shaw annoyingly gave up #3 after having it during his first season, because he prefers #23. Could be worse though - when squad numbers were first introduced in the Premier League in 1993/94, Charlton had the brainwave of numbering their squad alphabetically. A centre back got #1 and their goalkeeper got #2. :houllier:

With the PL starting tomorrow (UTD in 2 days time) don't the official PL squad numbers need to be given to the PL before the PL starts with any new signings getting numbers not already used?

I don't understand why he doesn't just get the #4 shirt which he also wears with France.

Because we couldn't manage to get Jones off the wage bill before he arrived
He doesn't own the number though. I'd say the same if it was Bailly's number. We just bought an elite centre back, we should give him a number that reflects that.

I think its a bit of an insult, why does Jones get to keep a shirt that he hasn't even worn in almost two years..?
Remember when Ibra came in, he got the #9 even if it did piss off Martial, but nowadays were are more concerned about upsetting Jones..?
Surely it could have been used as a gesture to make it clear to Jones that he has no future here, but this club do the opposite, so what does that suggest.

You've just signed an elite level player, treat him like an elite level player.
