Having changed my mind about Bale I would love to see something like:

-------------------------DDG------------------------
Valencia/RB---Bailly---CD--------Sandro
-------------Fred------Matic------Pogba------
Bale----------------Lukaku--------Sanchez--

That would be a formidable outfit. I would prefer Alderweireld as new CB but not convinced we will sign him. Obviously Sandro and Bale are dream signings and we could end up withe Rose and Willian as easy.

LB, CB, RW are our main prioroties (assuming we have signed Fred I can't see another midfielder unless Pogba leaves.) We could really do with a RB too but I'm not convinced we will sign 5 new players this summer.

Bale would be a really good signing and make us a lot less predictable imo. Obviously he would be a massive upgrade on what we have. He would be my muppet signing, fingers crossed.

If you offered United fans that lineup 2 years ago they would have snapped your hand off but it is semi realistic now. Time to be a bit more positive about where we are going.
I actually think you might be on the money here.

Priority:
1. Left-back
2. Midfield
3- Right-back
4. Right-wing
5. Center-back.

I think the left-back position is the most important one to get a high-quality player to take because that is where our best offensive players currently are good at playing, and they need the support & freedom a top quality left-back can grant them. After that I'd like to see us not be too reliant on Matic & Pogba to stay injury-free for us to be bale to string two passes together or create anything at all.

Right-back & right-wing would be great to have higher qualities on, but we could make due if we properly fixed the midfield options and gave our left-sided attackers a better partner.

Center-back would be awesome and the icing on the cake. I think it's needed to push us playing further up, but we have players to counter in the squad currently, so It's not the end of the world if we go in with our current bunch and play lower for another year as long as we adress it the year after..

Options:
LB: Alex Sandro (David Alaba)
MF: Sergej-Milinkovic-Savic (Mateo Kovacic & Ruben Neves)
RB: Thomas Meunier (Djibril Sidibe, Sime Vrsaljko)
RW: Riyad Mahrez (Gareth Bale or move Sanchez to the right)
CB: Varane (Alderweireld)

Preferences are based on reputation and/or minimal viewing for a lot of them.
I'd prefer to sign 2 midfielders. One to help Pogba out with the creating job and one to rotate with Matic for the defensive job needed.

Best case scenario for me being a 11 and bench when all fit like this:

Lukaku
Sanchez ----- Mahrez
Pogba - SMS
Matic
Sandro - Varane - Bailly - Meunier
De Gea

Bench: Romero (GK), Smalling (CB), Young (LB/LW)Valencia (RB/RW), Neves (DM/MF), Herrera (DM/MF) & one of Martial (LW/ST) or Rashford (LW/ST).
Other squad-fillers: Lingard, Jones/Rojo, Tuanzebe, Pereira, Lindelöf, Mata & TFM.

I'd happily see the back of: Rojo/Jones (one not both), Blind, Darmian & Shaw. I assume Fellaini will be signing for Milan or someone else.

Next summer I'd consider upgrading on Bailly if he isn't made himself a starter throughout the season, I'd push Lindelöf & maybe the other of Rojo/Jones out of the club to make way for a new first-eleven CB & Tuanzebe to be given the squad space. Effectively making Smalling - Bailly our second-string CB choices.

If I was a United fan I'd be hoping for something like:

--------------De Gea---------------
Sidibe Bailly Alderweireld Sandro
-------M-Savic Matic Pogba-------
------Bale Lukaku Sanchez-------

Personally I'd want a new manager as well but obviously you guys aren't going to get that this summer.

Assuming Dalot and Fred are done deals..... The only position I feel we definately need to sign a player for is Left Back, I can't think of a more solid option than Sandro.

I believe Rojo, Pogba and Sanchez (if played on the right wing) could sort out 4 starting positions as it would also allow Martial to start in his best position.

It's the time to be ruthless with those 3 players and if Jose doesn't seem them as up to scratch then scrap them for Alderweireld, SMS and Bale.

Not convinced we would sign 5 players either and your team is the exact team I would play if we was to sign Bale too! Saying that, we would only have Herrera and McTominay as backups in midfield, unless Fosu-Mensah and/or Pereira get chances. If not then we need to sign another midfielder, so 6 signings!

Really hope we keep Martial and Rashford too. They would be needed throughout the course of the season, especially since there could be a chance Bale would need to be rested in certain games due to his injury record, or in fact may actually get injured. Sanchez may continue his poor form from last season, if we have Martial/Rashford then it wouldn't be as much of an issue to drop Sanchez till he gets his act together.

Some of our substitute options could look tasty too!

Lindelof
Smalling
Fosu-Mensah (can cover at RB, CB and CM/CDM)

Out of curiosity, did you choose Mahrez over Bale due to the former being a more realistic acquisition or is it purely tactical

I just felt Bale's cost in terms of wages and transfer fee doesn't make sense economically. Also, Bale depends a lot on his physical attributes and we all know what happened to Rooney at around the same age. Mahrez, on the other hand could solve our right wing for the next 3 to 4 years and would free up funds for more pressing needs.

We'd basically be Madrid-lite.

Lukaku : Benzema
Sanchez : Ronaldo
Pogba : Isco
Savic : Modric
Fred : Kroos
Matic : Casemiro
Sandro : Marcelo
Bailly : Ramos
Alderweireld : Varane
Valencia : Carvajal
De Gea : Navas

It could easily shift to a midfield three, dropping any of the 4, shuffling a bit, and adding a third forward to equal Bale playing from the right in Rashford, Martial, or a muppet signing (Griezmann, Bale himself, etc). Works well enough for them and seems to play into the players we've been heavily linked with.

Disclaimer: I'd much rather that be Martial instead of Sanchez, but I'm trying to stay on the verge of reality.

For rotation, Matic can play where Fred currently is as the number 6. Herrera can come in where Fred and Savic are and play as a 6 or a 8. Fred can also play as the number 8 where Savic is and then you can bring in Matic/Herrera as the number 6. That way Pogba is also always freed up to come more forward and support the front 3. Having Alderweireld would make so much of a difference as it would free up the midfield more and they would not have to come as deep to collect the ball, as he can play a good forward pass unlike some of our existing defenders!

Also pray we keep Martial and Rashford as they can come in for any of the front 3 whether it's to rest them or due to poor form. Or imagine Martial and/or Rashford coming off the bench for the last 20-30 minutes!! Before we signed Sanchez that worked so effective for us last season! Obviously Valencia is most likely to still be number 1 RB but if Dalot impresses then who knows!

Bale----Lukaku----Sanchez

Rotation: Shaw frequently in at LB, Fred getting a run for Matic (to see if he can hold that position) or Fred in for Herrera and able to go up the field with Pogba a bit more, Lindelof, Smalling giving depth OR buy a young starlet like Malang Sarr, 18, OGC Nice ...

I'm still optimistic Shaw can come good but can't risk it if he decides to not work and impress the coaching staff in training. Between Fred, Sarr and Bale, that's over $200m. We'd probably have 300m (considering we're making $550m or more now per yr) total to spend if there's a clear direction communicated to the board which I'm confident Jose would do.

I'd use Rashford as a utility guy that can rotate with any of the front 3 and while this isn't optimal for his development, his development isn't top priority. It's winning. He must find a spot and perform so well that he can't be taken out.

One alternative, if Marcus starts to play well is to move sanchez into a midfield role in front of 2 deeper midfielders and bring Rashford in on the left which I think he plays very well in combo with a aggressive play out of the LB.

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing that I'd like to see out of this group is the style of play should be pressing and fast. We have strength and pace. We should use it!!!

Left back is probably the most important signing we can make. It would really free up Pogba and give us the right balance we need. Forget about wingers totally. Buy two fullbacks and an extra midfielder on top of Fred plus Griezmann. That's what I would do.

Something like this would be perfect:

DDG
Bailly Alderweireld Lindelof
Dalot Fred Matic Pogba Sandro
Griezmann
Lukaku

No room for Sanchez but if there was a chance to buy Griezmann then I wouldn't hesitate. Looks likely he's off to Barcelona but if he came here the formation should change to 3-5-1-1 to allow him to play as second striker whilst allowing Pogba to play in a midfield 3 at the same time.

If not then go back to 4-3-3 and buy a winger like Mahrez. Front three of Mahrez, Lukaku/Sanchez/Martial.

My backup 11 would be...

Romero
TFM Smalling Lindelof Young
Herrera Thiago
Pereira Lingard Martial
Rashford

Then in third place:

Periera
Valencia Taunzebe Rojo Shaw/Mitchell
McTomminay Blind
Chong Mata Gomes
(youth team player)

I'd ship..

Fellaini, Blind, Jones, Shaw, Mata, Young, Valencia Smalling in that order. Obviously not in 1 window, 3 windows.

All righty then.

My priorities in the transfer market:

RW - Douglas Costa
CM - Eriksen
RB - Someone who can challenge/take over from Valencia
CB - An experienced/calming presence (Alderweireld is a good option, but might be too expensive as fourth priority)

Possible lineup:

DDG
Valencia, Bailly, Lindeløf, Shaw
Pogba, Matic, Eriksen
Costa, Lukaku, Sanchez

Coleman £25m
Alderweireld £40m
Sandro £40m
Draxler £40m
Bale or Dembele £30m plus Martial (sale or swap)

5 is a lot of players but City have raised the bar and I’ve tried to stay within the rumoured £200m war chest.

Out:
Fellaini contract
Carrick retirement
Zlatan USA
Mata huge wages not merited
Shaw buster flush
Darmain honking
Rojo honking
Martial (contract)

These players are offering next to nothing nowadays and taking a fair chunk of wages. I’d also be open to selling Lingard and Herrera and Jones but understand we need some homegrown but I’d rather look at promoting Tunzabe TFM and Demi over Shaw Darmain and Jones.

In order of need for me

  1. Top left back
  2. centre mid starter
  3. right sided quality attacker
  4. right back (not necessarily a starter, as Valencia can do another season)
  5. centre back
It sounds like we're making good progress on 2 and 4.
Number 1 is surely very likely.

3 & 5 I think will rumble on all summer.

Alderweireld widely acknowledged to be leaving Spurs because if he doesn't sign a new contract he can walk for £25 million next year.

Bale threw down the gauntlet minutes after the Champions League final saying that he needed to be playing. Maybe he'll stay now Zidane has gone but we don't know.

Can we honestly include Bale and say "realistically?"
Came out minutes after the final and said that he needed to be playing and he was going to speak to his agent. It's more likely he'll stay now Zidane has gone but it's still possible. Realistic ≠ likely.

My team would be:

4411

Style of play - Wing play/Counter attack - Sir Alex way

Centre Backs

Typical centre back pairing. A combative defender, with a calm figure next to him.

Full backs

Right back supporting right winger, whilst left back overlaps left winger

Centre Midfielders

A double pivot. Two players who can attack and defend, with one being better at one than another. One player in the midfield who can conduct play and one who can break up play.

Wingers - One keeping the width, with one cutting inside.

Strikers - A target man, partnered with a support striker, who has the ability to drop off and create play.

Ins:

Mahrez - 60M
Alderweireld - 40M
Fred - 40M
Sandro - 45M
Dalot - 15M

= 200M

Out:

Fellani - Free
Carrick - Retired
Mata - 15M
Shaw - 15M
Darmian - 12M
Blind - 10M
Rojo - 15M
Jones - 15M
Andreas Pereira - 15M

= 97M

Net Spend = 103M

First Team

De Gea
Valencia Smalling Alderweireld Sandro
Mahrez Fred Herrera Pogba
Lukaku Sanchez

Romero Bailly Young Matic Lingard Rashford Martial

Second Team

Romero
Dalot Bailly Lindelof Young
Chong McTominay Matic Lingard

This isn’t seriously right? A CB and CM as wingbacks. A striker on RW?
Yep deadly, Bailly started off as a right-back and it wouldn't do him any harm going back there until he irons out the obvious flaws in his defensive game, and Fred started off as a left-back and he can seamlessly move forward into midfield if we switched to 3-4-3 midgame, and Griezemann would be deployed as a false number nine in that system, playing in and around the front two of Lukaku and Martial.

Ideally we'd have a better left-footed defender(for balance) than Rojo, but couldn't think of one then, or now
