Which post-Fergie manager, given 5 years in charge, would have done the best?

Each Man Utd manager since Fergie has been cut short, often for very good reasons. Many of them think they were hard done by, and if they'd had more time they'd have led the club back to the top. Which one of them would have done best if given 5 full years to mould the team, training, staff, and style, to their own liking?
Moyes?
Giggs?
Van Gaal?
Mourinho?
Solskjaer?
Carrick?
Rangnick?

Why no Giggs or Carrick?

The same one who DID DO the best - Mourinho.

Won 2 trophies, finished 2nd and wasn’t backed.

If your owners had backed him he’d have got rid of Pogba (for money), Martial and created a miserly, tough Utd that would’ve ground out a handful of trophies - possibly a CL imo.

Not that any of you will see it that way!

The only ones who didn’t really get a fair crack were Moyes and Rangnick. The other three had long enough. Moyes made plenty of mistakes but I do wonder how he would’ve fared had he managed to settle into the role.

Van Gaal if our board structure had remained the same.
Mourinho if he more control.
Probably this yes. Ole and Moyes couldn’t be given any more time. Ralf shouldn’t be on the list as he was always an interim. If he was announced as a permanent manager from day one it may have been different.

Unpopular, and I’m not saying he didn’t deserve to be sacked, but it’d have been Moyes for me.

Of course it would have been Mourinho. However, whether we'd survive his toxicity is another question.

I think Moyes would have made us Wenger's Arsenal. Consistent top 4 with cups here and there. A case of we will never know what would have happened given time.

LVG for me would have been the one I would put money on overall. I know his time isn't fondly remembered in term of how we played but I always felt the man had a plan.

Jose unlike but shouldn't have managed us and Ole is a personal hero but never a manager.

not LvG that's for sure. Would have ended up with more shit players then.

Mourinho and we should have signed him immediately after SAF left.

We also made the mistake of sticking with LVG when Klopp was available.

He was after Lukaku to then supply him from the wings, wasn't he. Perisic was one he wanted, I remember on here people feeling he was already too old and not exciting enough. The past 5 years have proved that all wrong, his fitness, work-rate and craft have been clear for all to see. Pogba and Martial gone would have been the correct decisions and freed up a lot on the wage bill. Surely he wouldn't have stayed for 5 years though... right?

LVG for me. He was the only one who seemed to have a clear idea of how to play. And we always seemed to do well against the top 6 in the league. We just lacked the creativity to break down low block teams which became a recurring pattern in the following seasons.

If Perisic proved all wrong then so did Lukaku who was dog shit in his last 2 PL seasons, failing to do even basics.

Moyes would've probably settled in eventually and had us getting consistently top 4 or 5 finishes, playing ok football. But, he probably never would won anything which means he technically still would have been less successful than both Mourinho and LvG.

But he's probably the only one who after five years in charge wouldn't have gone in a continuously down spiral and left us in absolute tatters, which the other 3 would have. Ole and Jose already did, to be fair, giving either of them another two years would've been even more of a disaster. LvG never really looked like he was capable of more than that FA Cup win either and his football was the worst of them all.

Van Gaal

Moyes is and always will be a loser. Good manager for clubs where trophies are not necessary, but not top club material

Probably Jose if he held a stronger position, we did slump quite hard when he wasn't backed but if he was it also would've been a costly exercise shipping in and out so many big money transfers with the type of football the fans don't want to see. In hindsight though I think the club bent too much towards the players that should've been let go.

If LVG got some better targets in the next year I feel he would've been better all round. The whole stint seemed very panicked off the back of the Moyes sacking and the huge chasm Fergie left with this top 4 rat race and then dumping him off for Jose.

Van Gaal.Had we managed to replace AdM with another creative player, we would have looked way better.

Done the best in terms of winning trophies, I presume? Probably Jose if they really gave him what he wanted and basically handed things over to him. I'm tempted to say LVG because while the football was awful at times, we did have that elusive "style of play", it was just the players we had weren't good enough to properly implement it.

Ole just came to a natural endpoint (although it went on for way too long) and reached his limits, and Moyes was simply not up to it. No amount of time in the world would have changed that fact.

LvG the man who signed Di Maria, Falcao, Rojo, Valdes, Martial, Schneiderlind, Schweinsteiger, Depay, Darmian.

Really?

He's the biggest reason we are in this mess.

When the best teams are playing attacking football, controlling game using possession, playing with intensity, FBs playing like attackers providing width, CBs playing like midfielders by playing important role in building the game, under Jose we would have played shit football, possession is bad philosophy, FBs as defenders rather than providing width, CBs duty is to defend and clear the ball.

If Jose wasn't backed because he didn't get Perisic then so was Van Gaal who didn't get Muller, Ramos and many other players.

Perisic was the one player that we know Mourinho wanted that probably would have been successful. The issue for me wasn't so much his age, but that he was yet another one who would want to play on the left. Rashford and Martial 'should' have gone on to be better than Perisic, and although that hasn't happened I do wonder how much of that is on the fact they've been under obviously poor coaching for most of their time here.

This thought that Mourinho would have been more successful with more backing is ridiculous. He got backed plenty, and almost all of them failed. Pogba and Fred are the closest things to a success, perhaps alongside Zlatan for that one season. Most of the other players that we heard he wanted have gone on to do little of note.

Yeah the biggest reason for our current mess is the 8 players who aren't even at the club. Right.

He did win 2 trophies tho… and then finished 2nd and then wasn’t allowed to sell the players he wanted to sell (who you’ve now let go for free ), or sign the player he wanted - who you then bought the following season for 20m more (Maguire ).

Mourinho with Utd’s backing would’ve won more trophies - especially if the dressing room knew it was his way or the highway.

Ehm, it's where it started. Is it that hard to figure out? 8 players who we had to ship out trying to replace on absurd wages?

Or the guy who signed Fellaini and Mata

Or the guy who broke record fee for Pogba who walked out on free transfer, huge money on Lukaku, record breaking contract for Sanchez, highest paid player in league by signing Zlatan, top 10 fee paid for defenders by signing Lindelof, Bailly, Dalot

Or the guy who signed Maguire for record fee, AWB for 45 million, James, De beek.

Transfers is the last thing to use for or against managers. Everyone did shit job.

Which trophies would we have won in 18/19 if we bought him Harry Maguire?

LvG

compared to the others he was unlucky to be sacked (FA Cup win and only just missed Top4, compared to complete dissary when Moyes, Jose and Ole were binned) and I reckon he would have sorted out the lack of goals with another transfer window
