Who would you keep: Rashford or Martial?

This is intended as a light-hearted and completely hypothetical friendly discussion

If you were manager and could only keep one, who would you pick and why?

I think Martial is the better player when at his very best, but I'd keep Rashford. He's a United youth product while also a very good player in his own right. In my opinion (you can disagree) he seems to be more focused and determined. And he appears to have a less problematic agent. He's a red too, so probably more likely to stay should Madrid come sniffing in 3/4 years time. And he is slightly younger with excellent potential.

Rashford for me. I think he can lead the line after Ibra.

Martial is a quality player but he is replaceable. Rashford, taking everything into account is not. It'll be very hard to find another youth product in our academy with the potential of Rashford.

Martial is a much better player and prospect than Rashford, so him.

Rashford.

Martial has shown too many worrying signs around his mentality on the pitch and with his agents antics off the pitch. No such problem with Rashford.

Martial's Goal/Assist ratio is better but Rashford is not far behind with 10 + 3 in 30 odd games and is a couple of years younger.

Should Martial turn into a world beater there's a much greater likelihood of him leaving than Rashford, who is a local lad and a boyhood fan.

That said, I still believe Martial could be one of the best players we've ever had, but he could just as easily be another Di Maria if he doesn't sort himself out.

Martial. He's got an ability to take the ball past people like very few others in the game. Rashford hasn't got the same level of skill and relies a lot on his pace, which is much easier to defend.

I'd keep both, people forget Martial is 20 years old and it was always going to be hard to replicate last season after barely having a break due to the Euro's and a whole new set up with a change in manager and tactics.

Look at Ronaldo, Giggs, Scholes or anyone else other than Messi at 20 years old and tell me if any of them were consistently good or great at that age ? It doesn't help that when Martial plays he's the whole left side as he's got Darmian playing who's so right footed its mental so there's no overlap or outlet.

Mhkitaryan and Mata have Valencia flying down the wing which allows them so much more space and time and a quality outlet or overlap so maybe when Shaw is reintroduced or we sign a first choice left back who's left footed Martial will have more consistency, I don't understand why Blind is being used at left back whilst Shaw isn't playing.

Rashford and Martial both have the potential to be two of the best forwards in the game in a few years but just like Ronaldo and Giggs it's not going to be overnight success like Messi was/is so we need to be a bit more patient with their consistency.

Since this is a hypothetical situation, I'd hypotheticalally fire Martial's agent, and sign him up to a 15 year contract. Then send him on loan to another club for half a season.

And ya, keep Rashford. ;)

Martial seems having higher potential to me but Rashford is more accountable and committed for sure.

I don't think it's straightforward that Martial is the superior player with the higher ceiling. Aren't there 2 years between them? Rashford could easily be as good as Martial is now, in 2 years, notwithstanding Martials form deteriorating this season.

For me, Rashford. Tough choice. Good question.

I'd keep Rashford. Both have bags of potential but I think Martial would have his head turned quicker to move (not a complaint, its exactly the reason we got him).

I swear there was a thread few months back where posters were asked would they rather keep Martial or sign Messi and overwhelming majority voted for Martial

Now people are opting for Rashford between the two, what happened?

Martial. He's more naturally talented and can play 2 positions -left forward and centre forward- to a good standard. And, I believe, he has Ballon D'or winning potential.

Rashford needs a lot of maturity in his play.

It's a good question because after Zlatan leaves, it could well be the case that only one of these players ends up being the main centre forward. So we may end up having to make a choice between the 2 players.

I'm not yet sure whether Jose will aim to buy a replacement for Zlatan.

I wouldn't be surprised if his becomes more than a hypothetical question, realistically, over the next couple of years

Probably Rashford. I think Martial has a higher ceiling and level of skill, but Rashford will also be an amazing player - plus he's Manc. That's a big plus for me, we haven't had a great Manchester born player in years and it should count for a lot seeing as our club is based in Manchester. Football's gone to shit in that respect.

Martial just edges it for me. For what it's worth I think he'll become a better central striker than Rashford with a slightly wider skill set and better technique. But that's going to depend on if he gets game time, personally i'd rather see Martial replace Zlatan in the immediate future with Rashford as the back-up / rotation option for the 9 and wing position.

Despite Rashford being a local lad, I don't think you could turn your back on Martial, who despite recent form, has shown the most potential in a Manchester United shirt since Ronaldo. He's a gifted footballer and one who you can genuinely envisage winning the Ballon D'or one day - should his talent be fully realised.

Then again, Rashford would appear to be the most naturally gifted footballer to have emerged from our academy in a long ol' time... so who knows! :houllier:

Good job this is only hypothetical. We're keeping both.

Martial. A more talented player and looks very much like he has a higher ceiling.

Surely keep Martial. He will turn into a world beater but definitely not happening under Jose.

Great thread and tricky question.
Today I am keeping Martial, no one knows in a few years.

Cheers.

Rashford, as he's a youth prospect. Martial is a better player, though.

As things are looking right now, Rashford. But I think none of them will get to that level in time to replace Zlatan after he's gone. It's more likely Jose will bring in an older more experienced player.
