Why don't United look at Championship talent?

The short answer to this is that we absolutely are looking at Championship players extensively.

The very important question to answer is: Can they be good enough to win a title with? We need to sign Rio's, Keane's and Van Persies, not Johnjo Shelvey and Nicolas Pepes. Sometimes the club can and will take a gamble on a talent (like James). But we'd never buy a player we exepect to slot right into the first team immediately from the Championship. Mentioned James is a player of circumstance that was given way more gametime than was intended. Max Aarons is a exciting prospect and could become something, so it makes complete sense that we're very interested in signing the player.

For any player to be of Manchester United, or for that sake any top4 club potential, they need to have the ability to have tremendous ability growth if they're to succeed here.

Players like Teemu Pukki, Ivan Toney and (regrettably as a totall fan of all Norwegian players) Joshua King, will never be bought by a top4 club with the aim to realistically challenge for a starting XI spot. Sure a club can on occasion do something wild and take a complete punt on someone, but that is mostly a desperation tactic and not long term recruitment.

Nearly all of the top20-40 most valuable players in the Championship are younger players, aged 18-24. https://www.transfermarkt.com/championship/marktwerte/wettbewerb/GB2 - They are all valued on potential.

It's a bit like with most talent's that aren't your average Haaland or M'bappe, players you know will carry their respective national teams on their backs despite barely being allowed to drive. It's an educated guess.
