United are accompanied by the football giants Sunderland and Aston Villa as the only three teams yet to register a penalty this season. Since March we have only won 2 penalties (Villa, Norwich) but conceded 7 in the process (3xLiverpool, 2xEverton, 2xLeicester).

Why are we conceding so many penalties but not winning any? Fergie effect? Webb's retirement? Ashley Young playing a deeper role?

We don't pass enough time in the opposition box.

We should have had a few penalties, but the refs didn't give it to us, but yes, the biggest reason is that we don't spend much time in the box (opponents, not ours, there we spend sometimes to much time :D).

That simple. We don't have many players that carry the ball into the box and the ball very rarely arrives to feet in the box.

We need more dribbling in the box! We also have no pace up front to get many counter opportunities.

At the moment we're crossing it a fair whack which rarely gets a pen, or taking long-range shots. There's some passing around the box but not a lot within it.

Valencia or Young are good example of what is wrong in our team they are regularly in good positions around the box, and instead of passing the ball to a teammate in the box, they will try to smash it or cross it.

That's ridiculous and even more when both players are good passers, but don't trust their abilities.

I think once Di Maria, Shaw and Rafael are back in the side we will get a few more. They are our only players who drive into the box with the ball.

Whilst I agree with the general sentiment.
We should have had at least 3 penalties already this season, possibly 4.
So I don't think its just that, we actually don't get the call when it comes to penalties of late, and its been happening since last seaoson.

I'm maybe wrong but i am under the impression that most penalties come from fouls off the ball and subsequent to a pass in the box to a player in movement.

    Dribblers aren't given much penalties.

It's psychological the more you dominate, the more the referee will be on your side and the more you spend time in the box, the more the referee will be inclined to give you penalties, even soft ones.

You may be correct. At the moment we aren't getting the ball in the penalty box that often, that was the point I was trying to make.

Evra leaving, he was the best player we had for winning penalties. He'd charge into the box and would get brought down, at one point it looked like Valencia was ready to take his mantle until he forgot how to run.

We should've had like 5 or 6 penalties this season, given sweet feck all. Everything at beggining of the season, I remember going apeshit because we were dropping points to teams that we should be winning against.

United receiving many penalties before was a testament to their fast-paced, counter-attacking style as they used to often have opposition defenders isolated against pacey players (Nani, Ronaldo, Valencia, Young, Welbeck etc) running at them with the defenders running backwards towards goal (and the chances of the defender having to resort to fouling or making a mistake are much more likely in such a situation). Whereas in comparison, the other teams in the league at the time would not have had as much pace, would not have had the quality to have used their pace in such a dangerous manner or would have had a slower and more pragmatic build-up which stops at the oppositions box. Back then United used to dominate teams more (especially at home) and as a result would have spent a lot of time in the opposition box than they do now either passing the ball or attempting to take players on and as a result would have forced more errors from the opposition defenders (foul, handball etc) which would have resulted in more penalties too. Once United's play improves and they become more consistent and more dangerous going forward (Di Maria back from injury and in full flight will help in this regard immensely) then they will start getting more penalties.

It is quite simple IMO. We don't attack as much as before, especially not on the opposite box. We also don't play as fast as before, which means that cases where opposite defenders have to make risky tackles happen more rarely.

We don't have a lot of pace and we have very few players taking someone on in the box.

Too little time in penalty box. No real tricky, pacy dribblers (in oppo box) either.

Basically this. Our pace and trickery is meant to come from Young and Valencia, the former will probably never win a penalty again given his reputation and the latter is obsessed with 200mph crosses rather than taking players on in the box. Our only hope is Di Maria.

Wilson should've had a penalty against Stoke. Not given.
West Brom player handled in the box in the 2-2. Not given.
Young taken out in the Sunderland box in the 1-1. Not given.
There have been others too. I like that Van Gaal doesn't blame refs or injuries or luck when things don't go our way. However, because he doesn't put pressure on officials for their incorrect decisions I feel they aren't as sharp on getting things right.

It has felt as if the refs have had it in for us at times. Like they'd been waiting for SAF to retire so they could finally stick it to us.

Because SAF doesn't manage us anymore of course.

Seriously though, we don't get half as many players busting forward into the box as we did under SAF

It's simple, a team that attacks a lot, stands a good chance of winning penalties. We play a lot of keep ball, but we hardly attack teams with real pace or intent.

This. We tend to pass the ball around the box. Once we see more of Di Maria, Rafael, Januzaj and Wilson we will be winning some penalties and dangerous set pieces.

We have no people who take people on in the penalty area (Di Maria usually wide or outside box)

We havent spent very much time in the opponents penalty area. We've had fairly low shot counts in a few games, and possession usually outside the box.

Burnley, it was a foul on RVP, and I think on Young in the same attack.

    PS
The handball in the WBA isn't a clear penalty as the rules are not quite clear on that.

We should have had like 5 in the first 3 games alone, and possibly 1 or 2 more outside of those first 3 games but really we haven't even had many shouts apart from that. We aren't taking on any players inside the box or causing them to commit, though that's also a large part due to having a lot more passing and less running with the ball. Di Maria and Januzaj are the only ones who are really capable of taking people on and making them commit, and one of them is injured with the other out of form. Rooney can do it but he plays deeper then he should be IMO.

The Young one was a push in the back against Burnley, there was also a handball not given in that game. Handball in the last minute against Swansea blocking a goalbound Januzaj shot as well. There were 2 against Sunderland but I don't really remember them right now.
