Average distance per game would be a slightly more meaningful statistic.

Did you correct Sneijder's minutes? If I take the 585 minutes Fifa has on their page for him I have 10,7 km

This is obviously some kind of trick to make us sign Sneijder. He must be a hacker.

How much on Messi? I bet some referees have more.

Exactly. The players playing the most minutes running the furthest isn't much of a surprise.
Who says they're running? It's about distance covered, it says more about tactics than about workrate.

If Poland was at World Cup then would be even one goalkeeper who would run more. Artur Boruc from Southampton. There were national matches where he had more kms done than Polish strikers.

Neuer is already running more. :p Forgot about him.

How did you get these results?
Distance / minuts * 90

But Sneijders data still is wrong as he has 585 minutes and not 558
  1. Bradley 12.6km
  2. Muller 11.0km
  3. Kroos 10.8km
  4. Sneijder 11.7 km
  5. Lahm 10.6km
  6. Howedes 10.5km
  7. Robben 10.4km
  8. Blind 10.1km
  9. Mascherano 10.1km
  10. Zabaleta 9.8km
  11. Vlaar 9.6km
Messi 573 minutes 51.9km
makes 8.51 km per 90 minutes

Yes, but did you do that for all players in the WC?

I did not. But it is easy to make it. You just need to copy the stats of the fifa page into excel...

But there will be results of players that have only been in the substitution role that probably will have higher numbers...

This has always surprised me. The average player in the Champions League knockout stages runs about 10.5 km per game. Do players care less about the WC, or are they just too tired to run more after playing a full season?

Ton of games for some players plus the conditions aren't exactly ideal down there.

Conditions and the CL knock out stage matches are closer I would say (influence of the third match of the group stage, when some teams already qualified for the round of 16 and some thrashings when players fade out in the second half like germany brazil 7:1, france-honduras etc)

Sneijder only ran that far because he saw Woodward in the distance.

I didn't bother with all of them since there is a ton, but down to Koo Jacheol (about top 130) the list looks like this in km per game:

(Some of you might want to place any liquid substance you are currently holding in a static position.)

Michael Bradley 12,6
Marouane Fellaini 12,0
Marcelo Diaz 12,0
Alejandro Bedoya 11,9
Victor Fayzulin 11,9
Mile Jedinak 11,8
Alexander Kokorin 11,8
Kevin De Bruyne 11,6
Muhamed Besic 11,6
Koo Jacheol 11,6
Charles Aranguiz 11,6

For the semi finalists:

Sami Khedira 11,3
Bastian Schweinsteiger 11,2
Thomas Muller 11,0
Toni Kroos 10,8
Luiz Gustavo 10,8
Wesley Sneijder 10,7
Philip Lahm 10,6
Georgino Wijnaldum 10,5
Benedikt Howedes 10,5
Arjen Robben 10,4

Obviously I didn't bother to calculate 130 players, I only took those I saw had good numbers, so one or two players left out might deserve a place in the second list, but the first one should be about right.

Why is it so important if you run more? Does that make you a better footballer/

I bet Ibrahimovic runs less than 90% of footballers

Faster runs not distance.

But Kroos is in a very good shape right now. He was not all season. In my eyes he gets better when he is more mobile - but he has always had periods in which he was great - only to then "relax" after he got too much sugar for his performances.

The numbers up there are from the FIFA page I guess. I read in an article that Müller had 295 sprints and only Arjen had more. But I do not know where the data is from.
