Behind the right goal post as "Whiteside shoots!"
1. Jaws
2. Alien
3. 2001: A Space odyssey
4. Interstellar
5. Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
That’s a good list.

Alien was on telly the other day and even though I’ve watched it 10-15 times, watched a bit (sign of a good movie?). Almost half a century old (!) but still a great lesson in suspense.… like watching Hitchcock talk about the difference between mystery v suspense OR surprise v suspense. I think he’d have loved Alien.

And the xenomorph is still one of the great horror movie monsters… scared the sh!t out of me first time and never fully gone away

We've got extremely similar taste. I adore each of those films and almost put Close Encounters in my list, too.

Watched it at around 10 years old and it put me off horror films big time. I do need to rewatch it though because the premise is right up my street and I did watch the sequels later on.

In no particular order. Goodfellas should be on here really, but I don’t know which one to replace it with.

Tbf Alien could have sat happily at no1, I just have such fond memories of Jaws and could watch it infinitesimally.

Alien, just a perfect film from top to bottom. The cast, the directors vision and of course the xenomorph. Perfect example of how suspense horror should be done.

I’d also say Alien is the very best ever cinematic trailer ever too … IMO obvs.

Spent so much time gazing in wonder at 2001, Jaws and Close Encounters as a kid, those 3 films are just burned into my psyche.

The Thing nearly made it onto the list but Interstellar is just such a monster of a film. I know it’s a divisive film (or Nolan is divisive as a director) but it hits every spot for me, really does.

I like Alien but I've always gravitated more towards Aliens.

I've sort of realised that I can't really rank specifically. Much easier to make tiers than a definitive list.

I guess I have a top 3 that I never tire of watching when the mood takes me:
  • Cinema Paradiso
  • Casablanca
  • Apocalypse Now
Then like 10 or so more that I also love, a random 2 of which might be:
  • Zerkalo
  • Network
(Blade Runner | Ikiru | Lawrence of Arabia | AI: Artificial Intelligence | 3 Colours: Blue | Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind | Life of Brian | Brazil | Pulp Fiction | Vozvrashchenie)

In itself a mighty film mate. Some amazing scenes and lines in that film.
Both good but obviously different styles. Alien is more horror and Aliens more action. Think Cameron rightfully realised that he shouldn’t have made another horror type movie for the sequel and switched it up.

Whoever I bet on
I actually made the trouble to watch most of imdb's top 50, but I just lack the artistic eye to see the greatness. So, going with what I liked best (even though I know the list is crap) :

1. American Beauty
2. La Vita E Bella
3. Star Wars Episode 3 : Revenge of the Sith
4. The Exorcist
5. Joker

I'm torn a bit with number 5 - it's either Blue Velvet, Pi, Taxi Driver, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, or There Will Be Blood (or something else). I'll update this post later when I've landed on one. And going by my top 4, I clearly have a theme...

Quite surprised one of my favourites Interstellar shows up many times. I could pick dozens, but will try to reduce to 5. Will include sequels as being the same movie, though.

Interstellar
The Godafther I & II
LOTR Triology
The Life of Brian
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

It’s funny cause I’ve seen all the greats and concur with others who pick them.

However, I’m gonna put up my favourite re-watchable movies in no particular order:

Die Hard
con air
Aliens
Interstellar
Batman v Superman ultimate edition (I know most hate this, I f*cking can’t get enough of it.

I goto see die hard, aliens and interstellar in cinema nearly every other year.

watched Hot Fuzz with my family on new years night and forgot how good it was.

Edit: add edge of tomorrow , another classic

Sometimes the best movies are the ones you can rewatch and enjoy over and over again, especially with your family…

That's exactly what I think. For example, Grave of the Fireflies is a fantastic movie (at least a 9.5 out of 10), but I wouldn't put it in my top 50 favorite movies list, let alone in my top 5. I've only watched it once and that's enough for me. I have no desire to rewatch it.

I prefer, for example, Sunshine over Grave of the Fireflies, even though the former is in my opinion maybe a 9.

Favorite movies I can rewatch over and over again, reanalyze scenes, discover new things, go to discussion boards and read into other people's views and interpretations.

So difficult this. The best films are different to my favourite films, which as others have said, are movies we like to watch again and again.

Top 5 favourites:

Back To The Future
Dark Knight Rises
Die Hard
The Godfather
Superman The Movie

Nah, forget it. Impossible to trim it down to five now I realise Empire Strikes Back and Shawshank aren’t on there.
