We've drawn Birmingham at home

MAN UTD TRIP FOR YOUNG BLUES

Youth Cup logoBlues have been drawn away to Manchester United in the third round of this season's FA Youth Cup.

Although it is probably the hardest possible tie that Blues could have faced, Academy manager Terry Westley has described it as a "great draw" and says it will be a good opportunity for his players to test themselves.

"It's a great draw for us," Westley told bcfc.com

"We've been picked out against one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

"In youth development and with the players they produce and the way they go about things it's easily one of the best clubs.

"So for our boys to go up there and pit themselves against their best players will be a terrific challenge for us.

"We've had some good runs in the past three seasons but this will be the severest of tests, but one that our players should really be looking forward to.

"We've got some good young players of our own with the likes of Ashley Sammons, Mitch McPike and Jordon Mutch who are all England under 19 squad players, as well as the England under 17 goalkeeper Jack Butland."

Westley is hopeful that because it is two top flight teams who have been drawn together that Manchester United may elect to use Old Trafford as the venue for the tie.

"I know that Manchester United have got permission to play at other grounds - Northwich I think, but they may decide that because it's a Premiership club against a Premiership club to play it at Old Trafford," he said.

"I know they did that last year when they played against Chelsea.

"Whether our manager (Alex McLeish) can have any influence with Sir Alex we'll have to see, but wherever we play it's a great chance for our youngsters."

The third round FA Youth Cup games sponsored by E.ON must be completed by 12 December 2009 and the full draw is:
1 Manchester United v Birmingham City

Not a bad draw, hopefully we might get a bit of a run this year.

Let's hope so. It's been a bit of an inconsistent season from us this year to date, but with a virtually fully fit squad to pick from (excluding the unfortunate Hussein) we should have the resources to make a good run and there isn't really a weak link.

Football is about glory, it is about doing things
Arsenal and Chelsea have potentiall tricky fixtures.

We are due a large fecking slice of luck in this competition.
I disagree. The teams that have produced large numbers of top class players for their first teams (think Carrick, Cole, Ferdinand etc at West Ham or Woodgate, Bowyer etc for Leeds) have steamrollered pretty much everyone they have played in the tourny, no matter the quality. I mean, that exceptional West Ham team won 8-0 in the final (I think), so if we can take on the best and beat them, it's a much better sign than a few years ago when we were scraping through 1-0 and 2-1 - I think we even went to penalties in the semi if I remember rightly.

Also, what's the team likely to be? I'm guessing something like

Devlin
Massacci-Thorpe-Wootton-Fryers
Tunnicliffe-Pogba-Petrucci
King-Cofie-Keane or Ajose-Keane-King

Think that's a bit (maybe very) simplistic. Just as an example, our 1993 finalists (inc. Scholes, Beckham, Neville x2, Butt, Gillespie, Savage etc) didn't beat anyone notable en route to the final and only just scraped through a semi-final against Millwall before losing the final to Leeds. Any way you can get through the tournament is a positive and I don't believe steamrollering everyone or scraping through the rounds makes any real difference.

That said, don't think we can claim to have been particularly unlucky recently, only had ourselves to blame for the Carlisle upset and we were the architects of our own downfall vs Chelsea, even if it was a tricky draw. Would say we're more due a run in the competition rather than any luck.

Assuming we make it that far, of course!
Yeah I thought about adding that but I don't think people think that I take that for granted.

As for Birminghams academy - they have a lousy form in the league. I know it can happen - but I would consider it a gigantic failure if we lose at home to them!

According to Les Kershaw on young gifted and red united are certain to be without brown and brady and probably king and may also be without massacci, fornasier and a few more for this game which is a pity

With this game being two weeks away, this looks like an injury crisis. They had to call on a couple of 19 year olds for the academy win last weekend so that would be close to 3 weeks out for most of these lads.

Hussein was back in training so he might be available, which would mean Tunnicliffe maybe at right back. Luckily we have quite a lot of good options at this level.
Source? Any word on when the other lads are back or what kind of injuries they're struggling with?

Tis grand, Thorpe and McGinty were fantastic at the weekend. Especially McGinty, esaily his best performace. Thorpe seems so consistant. Even Gill has improved alot of late. There might be hope for me yet!

Youth Cup tie tonight

United's bid to win the FA Youth Cup begins tonight (Thursday) when the Reds host Birmingham City in the third round.

The eagerly-anticipated tie kicks off at 19:00 GMT at Altrincham's Moss Lane ground and will be shown live on MUTV. After bowing out to Chelsea at this stage last season, the young Reds are determined to go further this year.

"The academy league is important and we want to do well there, but there’s a lot of history to the Youth Cup," says United winger Robbie Brady.

"People say every year that we have a shot at doing well, but this year we really have. We’ve got a strong side and if we play to our potential I’m sure we’ll go far."

Brady will unfortunately miss the match through injury, but there'll still be selection dilemmas for United youth coach Paul McGuinness.

“Everyone wants to play in the Youth Cup," adds Brady.

"It’ll be tough for Paul to pick a team because everyone wants to take the chance to show what they can do and we have a lot of good players."

Look out for a match report on ManUtd.com shortly after full-time.

Good team that. Obviously missing the likes of Brady, King and Brown from its first X1, but strong nevertheless.
