Nothing story. De Gea will start the season as #1 and as long as SAF does not resort to the stupid rotation policy he did last year, I expect DDG to have a very good season in goal for us.

Olympics will serve as great pre-season. With some luck all his mistakes and rustyness will be for Spain and he'll come back raring to go

He's going to be our number 1 next season without any shadow of a doubt unless he has an absolutely disastrous run of games. That is a fact.

He is staying in Engerland, getting games and training to a good level. Bullshit story. If anything he'll be fresh as a daisy after it. Pre-season is all about minutes on the pitch, he'll get a nice bit of that in the Olympics.

The fact that its a completely made up and non factual story is really accentuated by the fact that it says "De Gea pitched up at Spain's Olympic training camp on the back of seven days of intense training with his club" even though Uniteds first team only started back training on Thursday and I doubt De Gea was even part of that group

Keepers don't suffer burnout. Not to any great degree anyway.

He'll be fine for the start of the season's competitive games, Olympics or not.
I'd disagree slightly. Maybe not burnout, per se, but keepers throwing themselves to the floor (even in training) bangs up the body quite a lot. He might suffer for it at the end of the season with heightened risk of injury.

You recover from that at a very fast rate.

About shot stopping that's nothing new for De Gea. IMO he's the best shot stopper in the world (probably about the same level as Neuer and better than the rest) but he has to improve in the air and in communication with defenders. When he becomes good in these 2 areas then he will become the best keeper in the world.

He did make alot of top saves last year, more worrying is the amount of chances we let our opponents have mainly at the start of the season when our midfield was bypassed at ease and we had a bit of a makeshift defence in the absence of Rio and Vidic.

The crapness of crap stats. In the 8-2 you had eight shots on target and they all went in (none of them Chezza's fault). That's him fecked for the season on crap measurements.
If you ignore those 8, then I reckon he goes up to 69.2% & creeps into the top 10, but if you are going to ignore certain shots which he didn't save because "it's not fair" then it make the crapness of the statistics even more crap.

The point I'm making isn't that he's a bad goal keeper, it's that De Gea is way way way way way better then he was given credit for, and here's another waaaaaaaaaaaaaay for good measure.

De Gea conceded 6 against City. Guess that's him fecked too then...

I'd say those stats are fairly meaningful.

100+ shots are enough to reduce the contribution of chance to the result, and it's unlikely that the average difficulty of shot they had to deal with varied much from keeper to keeper.

The true test would be a comparison of rankings from year to year. If the keeper ranking order remained reasonably consistent, it'd be a sure indication that something real was being measured.

The stats are nice to have but they're not conclusive by any means. It shows that De Gea is a good shot stopper, but it can hardly be used as conclusive evidence. If it's supposed to mean that he's the best keeper in the league then he's not.

Just by how much would the number of shots on target you conceded in that game skew the percentages?

From this site, and according to this and that you conceded a total of around 3.45 shots per game on average. So over a season say 131 shots on target. By the same references, we conceded 4.13 shots on average home and way, for a total of say 157 shots.

So DDG @ 77.9% save rate saved 122.3 shots on average out of 157.

Szczesny @ 63.2% save rate saved 82.8 shots on average out of 131.

How much does that match contribute to the ratio:

# of saves: # of shots

Discounting the match, we subtract the total shots saved from numerator and total shots conceded from the denominator: DDG hasn't made his 6 saves, nor suffered 8 shots, Szczesny hasn't made his 6 saves nor suffered 14 shots:

for DDG:

(122.3 - 6)/(157 - 8) = 116.3/149 = 78.0%

for your PIG:

(82.8 - 6)/(131 - 14) = 76.8 /117 = 65.6%

So ... not much.

I'm assuming the numbers on that site are correct.

DDG aka "The Cat" is an excellent shot stopper up there with the best Spanish GK like Casillas and Valdez but then he also suffers from their weakness in the air.

His aerial game will take time to develop as he gains strength, experience, confidence and hones his skills.

No way is he anywhere near that Valdes.

Far away and ahead of Valdes in shot stopping.

Have you noticed that in the CL knockout stages in the last few years, Valdes often has conceded from the only 1-2 shots that have come his way? Sometimes, no shot on target, and he's conceded (own goal, not his fault).

But yeah. He's conceded 100% of the shots, a lot of the time in CL knockouts, which is really the only time i see him play.

Arsenal x2, Milan x4, us, chelsea x2 Rooney, 1 chance, 1 shot, 1 goal.
MIlan, few shots, most of them go in. Arsenal get a shot from a 20% angle to the touchline, beat him near post etc. Against Chelsea, don't think he really had any hard shots to save, but conceded several.

On the European stage at least, his shot stopping record has been terrible.
I'm not counting when he plays shit sides that only get to shoot at him from 35 yards.

By the by, there's not a single GK in the world I'd swap him for, considering his age etc. (de gea, that is).

Already I personally rate him in the top 3 GK's in the world.

Well then you're a bit mental aren't you
Maybe, but whose definitely better than him  By that, I mean, who do you think will definitely have a better season than him next season.

Of course, his season last season wasn't the 'top 3' in the world.

But the second half of the season, arguably was, and I doubt there's many of you who doubt he's at the worst, among the top 3 in the PL, and there's only around 4~ keepers around the world who are that highly rated in order to compete with him.

It's just, I only rate Casillas, Buffon above him, and Hart, Neuer, Cech and DDG on the same level. Since he's from United, I rate DDG the highest among them.

Job done. Lloris, Reina, Valdes et al are all below them for me.
