Called up to the Spain squad for the first time. Richly deserved for a brilliant debut season. Better than the much wanked over Pepe Reina who weekly mistakes seem to be ignored by the press.

That is brilliant. No Valdes in the squad, is he injured or as he been that much out of form?

The goalkeepers in Spain's provisional squad are: Casillas, Reina, De Gea.

Can only assume Valdes is injured? If de Gea has got into the squad ahead of him it'd be some achievement. Deserved anyway, he'll be Spain's numero uno for years to come, great experience for him, delighted for him.

From the sounds of it none of the Barca players are in the squad so when the final squad is announced they'll probably come back into the fold and the likes of De Gea and some others will be dropped.

Yeah just read there's no Barcelona, Chelsea or Bilbao players in the squad as of yet. Valdes will take de Gea's place for the tournament. :(

Hopefully De Gea will take Reina's place, no point sending Reina to not play when you can give a young GK the experience.

Just don't want him at the Olympics

He'll miss the start of next season because of the Olympics right?

Don't see him going to the Euros. From Spain's pov it wouldn't make sense not to take him to the Olympics.

Olympics ends one week before our first game in the league.

It means he wouldn't miss the start of next season, as Olympics would actually be his pre-season, but I still hope he'll go to Poland.

They might consider at the moment a young keeper been part of successful U21 and Olympic sides to be more of a experience than been 3rd choice and not playing at all

I would love for him to play in the Olympics actually. Should be another good experience for him
That and well, there will be minimal travelling involved.

I don't particularly want him to go to the Euros. It would be a nice experience to travel with the squad for him, but chances are it'll be a bit of a waste of time and he won't get anywhere near the starting lineup.

It only makes sense for Spain to bring him as he'll be their No.1 at some stage & the experience of being involved a big tournament like that would do him good. He could get a game or two as well if Spain rap up the group with two wins in their first two games.

How much rest do keepers actually need in the off season?
It's probably a mental thing if anything. As much as I'm sure he loves football, training and playing for two years straight must be pretty mentally tiring. Everyone needs a break every now and then to ensure you are fresh for the next campaign.

De Gea took on United for Olympics spot

David de Gea will keep goal for Spain at the Olympic Games in London, although he has had to make a lot of sacrifices to do so. There was no outright club-versus-country row between the Spanish Football Federation and Manchester United, but his club did warn the stopper of the possible fallout of taking part in the tournament.

For starters, missing pre-season with the Red Devils will mean he loses his place in the starting eleven to his Danish rival for the goalkeeping spot, Anders Lindegaard.

What's more, United insiders have admitted that De Gea is the type of player who can struggle to find his form and needs to train for several days to perform at his real level. This is why they advised him not to miss the close season, but the Spanish stopper's desire to play in the Games won out in the end.

This is not the case, however, for Chicharito Hernández. As an overage player, Manchester United was able to get its way and the Mexican forward has been denied the chance to represent his country at the Olympics.

De Gea pitched up at Spain's Olympic training camp on the back of seven days of intense training with his club. He would arrive at the United training ground in Carrington at 9 in the morning and not head home until 4 in the afternoon.

Haven't heard anything about the club trying to stop De Gea from going to the olympics before this. Suggests Dave wont start the season as our number one either.

I wonder if Fergie is unhappy with him. :(

He was at this best last year when he had continuity in the no. 1 spot, disappointing he's giving that up.

What a nothing story.
Yup. People need their head checked if they think Lindegaard will start when DDG is available. For anyone that thought they were close in ability they must surely see now who the superior goalkeeper is.
