Newcastle United's Nile Ranger arrested after rape claim

Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Northumbria Police said they received a call on Thursday that a woman had been raped overnight at a hotel in Jesmond near Newcastle.

A spokesman said a 21-year-old man had been arrested at an address in Forest Hall on suspicion of rape.

Ranger made his Premier League debut for Newcastle in 2010. A club spokeswoman declined to comment about the arrest.

Ranger, a former England under-19 player, has had spells on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

Stealing, gun photos, speeding and now rape.

He isn't any good at football, but what an opportunity he has wasted.

I didnt realise he was still around. He would have been sold anyways, he aint French. What are the odds he'll end up at Liverpoo?

Very easy target assuming she knew who he was and what his history was like.

Innocent until proven guilty etc...

I like the video. The fact is most people don't even know who the guy is. I remember a few reserve games but that t shirt really shows how stupid he is to think anyone knows who he is let alone gives a shit. I think he's going down that 'bad attitude - easy publicity road' and good luck to him (sarcasm). If you have an opportunity to have a great life, but act like a complete prick then what can you do? Wannabe gangsters are idiots.

Hardly, you appear to be insinuating that the victim has premeditatively made a false rape allegation. What of her innocence?

Fact of the matter is that very few of these cases brought against footballers result in a conviction.

Fact of the matter is that very few rape cases result in a conviction full stop.

Still don't agree with people being named in these sort of cases before they've been to court.

I'll boo if I want to fecking boo!

I've no idea what Ranger is still doing at Newcastle.

My best mate's cousin (who I've met) went to school with him and they were apparently friends. Says he was a complete muppet though, didn't know his left from his right, and this seems only to be further proof of that. A shame.

Hmmm I had forgotten about him. I remember the hype. He looked really awesome scoring that goal that was highlighted. Didn't know he was this big of a cnut, regardless of the rape rumor.

"You appear to be insinuating..."? Looks like your mind is made up there, Nick. Randall, surely, is innocent of assuming the guilt of the victim who has alleged the guilt of the accused, who has at least the right to be assumed innocent until....

He's clearly a massive feckwit, the only time his name is ever mentioned is due to problems he's involved in.

Why is it that when someone is accused of rape, one of the first things you hear is how the victim could have targeted the accused rapist? It's a disgrace.

Because they could have?

It's wrong that people are publicly disgraced and sentenced for a crime they may not have committed.

You don't see the same response when people are accused of other crimes. There is an inherent skepticism towards rape victims that really doesn't say very much for our society.

Probably because it's happened a number of times with professional athletes. I don't think he's accused her of anything. Just pointing out that he shouldn't be assumed guilty and proposing a not uncommon scenario as an explanation.

Most people, and the media, assume that accused rapists are guilty. Even if he's not guilty, he will still be branded as a rapist after the trial by media.

I'm probably just highly skeptical of any case like this because I've seen people get railroaded by the media and public only to be found innocent.

Ultimately, rape is a very difficult thing to prove. Unless there is strong physical evidence, it comes down to "he-said-she-said." I'd rather be open to all possibilities than assume guilt or innocence of the rapist.

Edit: It also doesn't say much for society when women do falsely accuse men of rape only to hurt the cases of actual instances.

It says more about society's scepticism towards girls who go to night clubs, get extremely drunk and mix with footballers than scepticism towards rape victims in general.

Not my most convincing post but then it's late and this topic has already been done to death on the numerous other occasions young footballers have been accused of rape in the press.

Why is going to night clubs and getting drunk relevant?

Because its so easy to do and quite a common thing. I know a lad that got accused of it because the bird was pissed off at him. It didn't even go to court but still mustn't have been a nice experience.
There's also 100% chance of nothing happened to the supposed victim even if they're found not guilty, because of obvious reason. Plenty of dickhead birds that would try it for money or spite.
