It's a competition with a fine history, but it's an utter farce that the final was played between two clubs who got there by failing.
Oh, its so much shitter than it used to be. The UEFA cup of the 80s wasn't too different from the European cup imo. UEFA have decimated the competition.

It is however still a European competition and one that a lot of teams would like to win imo.

You're completely right though, the 2 finalists not even having started in the competition is a joke.

Ok hush about Terry now, we all know hes not likable.

Not a bad header by Ivan was it? Turning out to be a useful player.

"Turning out to be"? He's 29, you know? And he's been your best central defender for the last two or three seasons.

Like I said they will do the little vice tripple, like Bayern last year. :D
Yeah, but this looks slightly more dramatic, Bayern was out of the league relatively earlier.

Mind, Porto still has to confirm the title on the weekend, and we're playing away to the third-placed team (minnows qualifying-round CL debutants for next season) that only lost home once this season.

I thought Benfica were the more inventive and dangerous team across the 90 minutes but their defense is suspect and it cost them.

Maybe we'll play your lot if you can manage to not get knocked out by then.
AVB will succumb to pressure next year and field the kids so that we can focus on the league.

Then we'll get top 4 and have to actually take Europe seriously. Which we're not used to doing so we end up dropping back out of the top 4.

Or something....

Say what you want, but Chelsea have won a European trophy 2 years in a row, the last time we were successful in European competition was 2008. I hope that changes soon.

At the end of the day, when we went down into the Europa League last season, I hoped we could win it because it's a major trophy, a European trophy and it's also a trophy we've never won.

Winning your league is the most important thing, but I want us to start being successful in Europe again.

We are currently the Champions league and Europa League holders. I think that's a bit greedy and we should give one of them up soon.
Will they notice if we give them the EL one back secretly?

At least Dortmund or Munich will then be able to say they are Champions of Europe, or will your fans still try to claim that accolade.

Agreed, when we first went into the EL I wasnt bothered if we went out because the top sides rarely ever win it due to focusing on other competitions. Once we were in the semis though I felt we had to go for it.

Its already been said we'll claim 'we're champions of Europa' in a huge stadium it wont sound much different.

No you're not, you're the Europa League holders. You gave the Champions League trophy back the other week.

For the next 10 days, Fernando Torres is a reigning World Cup, European Championship, Champions League and Europa League winner.

For someone, who doesn't play football very well, that's quite an accomplishment.

For those who think its e, embarrassing to win the Champions league one season and the Europa league the next, if that is indeed embarrassing then I hope to god that next season is an embarrassing one as well!

Did anyone actually confirm if Everton in EL? Someone asked earlier.
Im not sure I actually asked this about a month ago. I assumed it was the losing finalist, but in the end Benfica are in Europe already too.

No idea, it could well be Everton yes.

I don't think it's embarrassing, a trophy is a trophy at the end of the day.

You have to reckon it's slightly more cheering to do like Porto in 2003 and 2004 :D

UEFA Cup felt like the biggest moment of my life as a fan (I was too young in 1987) and the following year was even better.

In 2011 we won it whilst being unbeaten in the league (27 wins and 3 draws) so it felt like an excellent cherry on top as well.

That would be good. Nice for Moyes to know he has got them there. Upset Liverpool fans even more.
