They were in Ligue 2.
That's a fair point, but seeing as Monaco finished 13 points clear of the promotion places he still had plenty of opportunity to sign a new deal. Any assurances of playing time he'll receive from his new club will be just as concrete as those he'll get from Ranieri.

Maybe he simply wants to play in a better league and in Europe. He wont get more money elsewhere other then Monaco. He not a marquee signing.

I have never seen him play so dont know if he is even good enough for a us so maybe it is all agent talk.

Keep a clean shit tomorrow, United is my final bus
It definitely seems to me that his agent is whoring him around as he's out of contract in three weeks. I'd be surprised if we're interested. FM legend though...
You don't whore yourself out by saying that you've already agreed a deal with your next club. Don't think he's done a lot wrong by the looks of it, Monaco seem to have left it late to try and tie him down, was he supposed to wait for Monaco or look for a new club when he's soon to be out of contract?

He's not the messiah... he's a very naughty boy
There's a lot of briefing that Manchester United were involved. We're typically used to drum up interest, so that sounds to me like whoring out. May be doing the lad a disservice however... we'll wait and see where his final destination is.

Nothing wrong with seeing what options are available if his contract is up. I haven't seen him play but he's highly rated and at 20 will only get better. Considering it's also a free signing (and a midfielder!) there's really not much risk.

I have never seen him play and know nothing about him. But on the face of it he's only 20 years old with 80 first team appearances already, an U21 international for a fairly strong French team in a position we are short on quality...on a free transfer this would be a very shrewd move for us.

It doesn't seem likely though, I don't know why. Possibly simply because he's a midfielder and I have a mental block on us signing midfielders now.

I've seen him play a good few times for French youth teams, and once when he played against Lyon. He's always impressed me, I love that he's so small but so strong in the tackle. I follow the french football team, especially the u21s and u19s and he's always stood out to me.

Evra would definitely help him settle but it's quite a surprise how loud and fast French media reacted to his decision to leave.

He's pretty much already in Manchester United from what they say.

Some little fart who sits in front of the back four and runs a lot? We wouldn't have any need for him the vast majority of our games.

He does more than that. He starts attacks with his passing and he make sure the defense in solid. It is the way to play in Europe and in big games. These kind of players are in almost every top team.

Nonsense. He sat in front of the defence, sure. He didnt contribute much going forwards, true. But he after positioning himself in front of the back four he was absolutely magnificent in defence and in destroying other team's attacks. He wouldn't suit a lot of teams, like us under fergie, but to suggest all he did was sat in front of the back 4 and ran a lot, is apart from being contradictory in a literal sense, a bad assessment of a very good footballer.

Makélelé was ultra defensive. From my memory of him, he offered very little else than cover for the defence. Now this is well and good, as he was quality at it. But, it's a role Carrick can perform as can the heavily linked Strootman. I would guess, judging by the comparisons, that both Carrick and Strootman would be better football players than this guy. Just an observation. As we'd only really require this kind of player in the latter stages of the Champions League away from home, and away to our title rivals.

Having said all that, he is leaving for nothing supposedly. So couldn't really complain.

It's a kind of player Ferguson never utilised, I don't think Moyes did too. Phil Neville a bit, but not all the time.

I really don't like players of the Makalele mould. Not questioning the quality of Makalele here and he was good defensively but I like to CM's offer a lot more going forwards than Makalele did

Fabregas to Thiago to Stootman to Sneijder to Mendy. Our midfield desperation is getting to me.

He's not that limited. He's no Thiago or Fabregas, but he can pass. The closest player we have to him at the moment would be Fletcher.

Makelele wasn't a CM. He was a DM.

And Cunto has acted the fool in this thread.

If a player is like Makelele, he really is an actual defensive midfielder. They have a very different role to play than a CM ithe united 442/4411.

If we sign a player as good as Makalele we're sorted. Unreal player.

Ferguson has said in the past that be never saw a need for a player who's sole role was breaking up play which is essentially what Makalele did.

I think Moyes is similar, and I think we have players who are capable of playing that role in the one off matched where we need it.

Not that I've seen this guy play and know his style.

It's impossible to speculate considering I've never seen him play but it seems like it would be a good deal for us. A young, seemingly talented player who can act as cover for Carrick who just so happens to be free. We don't need to waste money on someone just to sit our bench (like I think any cover for Carrick would likely do most of the time) which frees up money for a Carrick partner. Even if the player turns out to be shit he's free so it doesn't really matter too much.

I mean, isn't this the kind of system he'd be suited to?

I'd rather play Jones there if we're going with that formation. Granted, he has looked a little ungainly there at times, but that's only when he bombs forward through the midfield. If we're going to put a spare defender in front of the back four it might as well be someone who's decent in the air and already a proven leader on the pitch.
